That's when the customers are taken from their seats at ground level to the observation rooms in elevators that travel at remarkable speed. Your waiter will communicate your order in mime( 哑 语 ) and keep you entertained with performances in between courses. B I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?” Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.” In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know. It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan! 4.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ______. A. describe the place carefully B. show him a map of the place C. tell him the names of the streets D.refer to recognizable buildings and places 5.What is the place where people measure distance in time? A. New York.. B. Los Angeles. C. Kansas. D. Iowa. 6. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ______. A. in order to save time B. because of honesty C. so as to be polite D. for fun 7.What can we infer from the text? A. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences. B. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly. C. People have similar understandings of politeness. D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors. 根 据 第 二 段 第 一 、 二 句 “Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don't have names. In J apan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names.” 根 据 第 四 段 第 一 、 二 句 “People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distan ce in time, not miles.” 根 据 最 后 一 段 中 的 “But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers‘I don’t know’. People in Yucatan believe that ‘I do n’t know’is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one.” 故选 A 项。 C  How much television do you watch? Did you really give an honest answer? A recent study shows that people aren't totally truthful about their television-watching habits. The study in question was conducted at Ball State University in the US. Researchers there wanted to find out how much television people view according to their age. The study was paid for by a council associated with the Nielsen Company, which determines television ratings. The conclusions were that people spent more than 8 hours a day looking at a screen. This included cell phones and computers, but the majority were television screens. There are three interesting things about this study. The first is that people are exposed to more than one hour of advertisements per day. The second is that even with access to DVDs and Internet videos, television is still the most popular media source. The third is that the amount of screen-watching people do is relatively the same from the ages of 18—65. So, if everyone is watching television, why lie about it? Well, if someone admits they watch television for five or six hours, they could be considered a couch potato. Michael Phillips, one of the study's main researchers, says, “There's a social stigma(羞耻) for people who watch too much television. Sometimes, however, watching the latest reality show or the funniest sitcom gives co-workers and friends fun things to talk about.” Even if you do watch a lot of television, perhaps we can use this study as a reason to be honest with ourselves about how much time we spend in front of the television. I mean, after all, everyone else is doing it... 8.Why do people lie about how much TV they watch? A.Because the show they watched is not the latest. B.Because they may be laughed at by co-workers or friends. C.Because they don't want others to know what they watched. D.Because there's something negative attached to watching too much TV. 9.Which of the following is true according to the study? A.The most popular media source is the Internet. B.18-year-olds watch more TV than the ones in their 60s. C.People are exposed to over an hour of advertisements a day. D.Researchers say that people watch over eight hours of television a week. 10.How could people feel to be considered as a couch potato? A.Comfortable. B.Ashamed. C.Excited. D.Satisfied. 11.What idea does the author mainly want to express in the article? A.The effects of watching TV. B.How much television we should watch every day. C.There are some interesting facts of watching TV. D.People lie about how much television they watch. There's a social stigma(羞耻) for people who watch too much television. The first is that people are exposed to more than one hour of advertisements per day. A recent study shows that people aren't totally truthful about their television-watching habits. D A small family approached. The daughter was young and pretty. Her name was Blair, and she was obviously leaving. Her parents were not. The three gazed at the crowd and began their wait. Blair was twenty-three, fresh from graduate school with a handsome r￿sum￿(简 历)but not ready for a career. A friend from college was in Africa as a volunteer for Peace Work, which had inspired Blair to devote the next two years to helping others. Her assignment was in eastern Peru, where she would teach primitive little children how to read. She would live in a hut with no modern conveniences, no electricity and no phones, and she was anxious to begin her journey. The flight would take her to Miami, then to Lima, then by bus for three days into the mountains, into another country. For the first time in her young and sheltered life, Blair would spend Christmas away from home. Luther, her father, was sad that Blair was leaving. The good-byes had all been said.“Are you sure this is what you want?”had been asked for the hundredth time. Then, the first announcement was made, the one asking those in first class to come forward. “I guess we'd better go,”Luther said to his daughter, his only child. They hugged again and fought back the tears. Blair smiled and said,“The year will fly by. I'll be home next Christmas.” Nora, her mother, bit her lip, nodded and kissed her once more.“Please be careful,”she said because she couldn't stop saying it. “I'll be fine.” They released her and watched helplessly as she joined a long line and inched away, away from them, away from home and security and everything she'd ever known. They turned and got into endless sadness. 12.What's the reason for Blair's decision to help others? A.Her college's requirement. B.Her friend's behavior. C.Her successful career. D.Her parents' support. 13.What were the family waiting for? A.The flight to Miami. B.The flight to Lima. C.The bus to the mountains. D.The bus to another country. 14.Which words can best describe Luther and Nora's feelings? A.Pleased and appreciative. B.Indifferent and cold. C.Heartbroken but relaxed. D.Understanding but worried. 15.What can we infer about Blair in the passage? A.She was twenty-three years old. B.She was tired of city life. C.She would be in first class in the flight. D.She used to spend Christmas in Peru. A friend from college was in Africa...helping others. Yesterday was Mother’s Day.
