Before that, my go-to conferences included Metals in Biology in Ventura, California. This past January, I went back to Ventura after a 15-year ___41___. A lot of things struck me about how things have changed and how some things have stayed the same. One thing that is increasingly on people’s minds is the future of scientific meetings. What has stayed ___42___ is that a conference of that style, with 200 scientists from around the world, is a vital form for scientific exchange. The participants ranged from graduate students to the pioneers in the field of bioinorganic chemistry. It was interesting to see how far a lot of the science has come. Some fields still have great ___43___: Even though we know much more about the structures, we still wonder how the O–O bond forms in photosystem II(光合体系 II). One thing that has started to change ___44___ is the increasing number of women and people of color among conference speakers and participants. We are ___45___ close to solving the equity (公平) problems in science or science meetings, but the change in the ___46___ and atmosphere of meetings overall after 15 years is encouraging. This trend should continue, and more members should have speaking roles to showcase their science, and maybe small meetings could also require that a few talks be given by postdocs and early career faculty. When it comes to big meetings, the interchange among scientists ___47___ is still essential. But it’s time for the scientific community to engage in frank talk about the ___48___ of meetings on the climate. Some conferences have been supporting digital poster sessions to ___49___ waste, but thousands of folks flying to these meetings is the real problem to focus on. It’s time to think creatively about how to reduce the carbon footprint of meetings while 高三英语试卷 第 6 页 共 12 页 ___50___ —even improving—their value. What if we broke the large meetings into smaller, concurrent( 同 时 发 生 的 ) ones at ___51___ sites where people could gather, sharing the drive or taking the train? Despite the big draw of large meetings, unless you’re in the front rows of the big ballrooms where these are held, you’re watching the speaker on a screen from the back or even in an overflow room. But in a concurrent sites model, ___52___ conferences could be spread across different sites. This approach would lower the cost of ___53___ conferences and thereby potentially increase the number and diversity of attendees. A group of graduate students piling into a ___54___ is much more democratic than having to decide who gets to fly. Scientific conferences are vital to scientists’ collaboration. Continuing to improve them in terms of equity for both the participants and the climate is something we can’t stop ___55___ to do. I volunteer to drive the first van. 41. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read. A As consumers, especially young ones, become more eco-conscious, services are popping up to reduce wastefulness in the flower industry, extending the life of old bouquets(花束) that were previously thrown away the day after a big event. Considering that the floral(花的)gifting market is expected to reach $16 billion in revenue by 2023, buying from eco-friendly businesses can have a huge impact. According to one 高三英语试卷 第 7 页 共 12 页 estimate, the roughly 100 million roses grown for a typical Valentine’s Day in the U.S. produce about 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. “When you realize what the supply chain looks like and the number of hands that touch these flowers, and then they’re only appreciated for a couple of hours, it’s kind of disgusting when you think about the amount of resources that go into it,” says Jennifer Grove, founder of New York City-based flower service Repeat Roses. While working as a wedding designer and corporate planner, Grove often oversaw the design of floral arrangements, only to see those creations thrown away within a few hours. In 2014 she founded Repeat Roses to make it easier for luxury clients to donate used bouquets. Like a traditional floral service, the company sells high-end floral decorations for weddings or social events, but it then recycles or composts(堆肥) them. If a customer chooses the unique repurposing(为......改变用途) service, a Repeat Roses team can remove the arrangements from the event and then restyle the flowers into smaller bouquets to donate to hospitals, nursing homes and family shelters. If there’s a charity that holds a special place in a customer’s heart, the team will ensure the blooms are sent there. “It’s a logistics business, and we’re trying to make sure we are strategic in where we play matchmaker,” Grove says. When the charities are finished with the flowers, Repeat Roses also picks them back up and composts them. The altruism isn’t free—prices start at $1,750 for the removal and repurposing service to account for the transportation and labor costs. If you’re not willing to spend that much, the company will still compost the flowers from your event instead of sending them to a landfill. Through these two methods, Repeat Roses estimates it has diverted more than 98 tons of waste from landfills and delivered almost 53,000 floral arrangements to people in need. Although Repeat Roses is a for-profit business, the flower repurposing itself is a tax write-off for the client. As the fair market value of a client’s donated flowers is what’s used for the charitable tax credit and is eligible for deduction, Repeat Roses ensures that the beneficiary sends you an acknowledgement letter including details of your donation. 56. Jennifer Grove founded Repeat Roses in order to do the following except ______. A. avoid the waste of flowers B. reduce the pollution to the environment C. earn money by selling used flowers D. help some customers do charity work 57. The underlined word “altruism” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________. A. the company’s composting the flowers B. the customers’ donating flowers to people in need C. the reception of the donation by the people in need D. the transportation of the flowers to a landfill 58. What benefit does a customer who has donated flowers get? A. To get a discount when buying flowers.高三英语试卷 第 8 页 共 12 页 B. To feel fulfilled because of donation. C. To get a tax reduction. D. To receive a letter of compliment. 59. The passage is mainly intended to introduce ________. A. a creative way of making money B. a green trend of waste utilization C. a way to cut the emission of carbon dioxide D. a company devoted to charity B Coronavirus: What is “flattening the curve” and will it work? In epidemiology, the idea of slowing a virus’ spread so that fewer people need to seek treatment at any given time is known as “flattening the curve”. It explains why so many countries are implementing "social distancing" guidelines—including a “shelter in place” order that affects 6.7 million people in Northern California, even though COVID-19 outbreaks there might not yet seem severe. Here’s what you need to know about the curve, and why we want to flatten it. What is the curve? The “curve” researchers are talking about refers to the projected number of people who will contract COVID-19 over a period of time. (To be clear, this is not a hard prediction of how many people will definitely be infected, but a theoretical number that's used to model the virus’ spread.) Here’s what one looks like: The curve takes on different shapes, depending on the virus’s infection rate. It could be a steep curve, in which the virus spreads exponentially (that is, case counts keep doubling at a consistent rate), and the total number of cases skyrockets to its peak within a few weeks. 高三英语试卷 第 9 页 共 12 页 Infection curves with a steep rise also have a steep fall; after the virus infects pretty much everyone who can be infected, case numbers begin to drop exponentially, too. The faster the infection curve rises, the quicker the local health care system gets overloaded beyond its capacity to treat people. As we’re seeing in Italy, more and more new patients may be forced to go without ICU beds, and more and more hospitals may run out of the basic supplies they need to respond to the outbreak. A flatter curve, on the other hand, assumes the same number of people ultimately get infected, but over a longer period of time. A slower infection rate means a less stressed health care system, fewer hospital visits on any given day and fewer sick people being turned away. How do we flatten the curve? As there is currently no vaccine or specific medication to treat COVID-19, the only way to flatten the curve is through collective action. Some governments have recommended that all citizens wash their hands frequently, self-isolate when they're sick or suspect they might be, and start “social distancing” right away. 60. According to the passage, which of the following about the curve is TRUE? A. The curve has different shapes depending on the types of pandemic. B. The curve with a flatter rise has a flatter fall as well. C. The steep curve suggests local health system might maintain its capacity. D. The curve here shows the number of people who’ve been cured. 61. Why is it important to flatten the curve? A. The time for the infection will be shorter. B. People can develop immunity to the virus. C. The health care system can handle the infected people. D. Vaccines can be developed to stop the spread of the virus. 62. What is the way mentioned in the passage to flatten the curve? A. Putting local health care system under stress. B. Paying more frequent visits to local hospitals. C. Giving people effective medication or vaccine. D. Practicing social distancing as soon as possible. C Malaysia has long wished to join the ranks of developed countries. Admission to the OECD, often referred to as the “rich countries’ club”, would be a formal recognition. But how close is Malaysia to the OECD level of development? Judging from its economic development, the answer is “close”. In 2019, Malaysia’s per-capita GDP was estimated at about $12,200, not far behind the $13,530 average of the six least wealthy OECD members, according to World Bank data. Per-capita GDP is a very narrow 高三英语试卷 第 10 页 共 12 页 gauge of development, though. Another good measure is the human development index, or HDI, which takes into account life expectancy, health, quality of life and education. In 2019, Malaysia’s HDI put it 61st of 189 countries. Within Asia, only three countries rank higher: Singapore at 9th, Japan at 19th and Korea at 22nd. So Malaysia has made good progress. However, the service sector provides a more comprehensive assessment. The service sector, as opposed to agriculture or manufacturing, tends to be the largest and most important in any developed economy. Here you find the best-paid, most highly skilled jobs. Services reflect the quality of a country’s workers. And since a large part of the service sector is linked to consumers, it also measures consumer-sector development. An innovative, sophisticated service sector with a strong supply of skilled labor and steady demand from its customers is a meaningful measure of a country’s development. So how is Malaysia’s services sector? On the supply side, Malaysia boasts one of the best-educated populations in emerging Asia. However, educational quality is far from satisfactory. According to the OECD’s latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Malaysian students of equivalent education levels perform only about 85% as well as their OECD peers in reading, 88% in math and 84% in science. It’s better on the demand side, where private consumption has survived slowing global trade and rising economic uncertainty. In the first half of 2019, private consumption grew by 7.7% year on year—not far off 2018’s 8% growth—despite falling investment and slowing export growth. To go forward, Malaysia needs to make labor productivity and growth in consumption mutually reinforcing(加强). To boost labor productivity, it needs to improve both the quality of workers and their market mobility. A more productive labor force will translate into higher household incomes, which will further stimulate private consumption. More consumption will encourage greater investment in services. And stronger investment, especially in startups, will make services a more powerful engine of employment growth. Increasing investment in services would come with a bonus: quickening the evolution of Malaysia’s digital economy. This is the new frontier( 前 线 ) for Malaysia’s service sector. Getting there will prepare Malaysia for the prime time. 63. The underlined word “gauge” in Paragraph 2 is the closest in meaning to __________. A. the distance between two places B. an instrument for finding the size, quantity, etc. of something C. a fact or event that can be used to judge something D. something missing that prevents it from being complete or satisfactory 64. To evaluate a country’s economic growth, the service sector offers a more complete evaluation because __________. A. it shows how well labor force and consumer-sector develop B. developed countries depend entirely on services to prosper C. it includes jobs that require both basic and advanced skills D. growth in agriculture and manufacturing underlines the service sector 65. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage?高三英语试卷 第 11 页 共 12 页 A. According to PISA, Malaysian students score higher in reading than science. B. Higher family incomes will help to increase labor productivity. C. Slower global economy didn’t affect Malaysia’s private consumption that much. D. Investment in services is likely to create more job opportunities. 66. What can be the best title for this passage? A. The Definition and Role of a Developed Country B. Developing Economy Is the Key to Joining OECD C. Malaysia Has to Further Develop Its Services D. People in Malaysia Need Better Education Section C Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. The next time you find yourself negotiating a promotion or job offer, it might pay to look past the job title and explore the specific responsibilities that will be yours alone. That’s the conclusion of a new research paper from a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, Nathan Wilmers, who examined the question of why salaries often differ between people with the same job titles in the same organization. _______67_________ Wilmers found that even within roles with the same job title, employees who managed to claim specific job tasks unique to the organization typically had an advantage in pay. Workers who possessed these specific skills and responsibilities, which Wilmers referred to as “job turf”, typically earned 5% more than colleagues with the same job description, even when controlling for past experience, education and gender. _______68_________ Wilmer findings on job turf echo a conclusion. _______69_________ Power within an organisation is often less a function of what’s granted from higher-ups (job titles, seniority) than of an employee’s ability to successfully navigate the organisation’s social networks. In other words, the ability to build relationships with colleagues who might be willing to mentor you, train you and eventually share or delegate key tasks has enormous value. A. This poses a challenge to typical ideas of solidarity. B. It often comes up in academic research on social networks in organizations. C. Perhaps the most effective way to gain job turf is to stay in a job. D. The results suggest that workers who are able (and willing) to identify and claim specific skills within their job description end up with a slight pay advantage over their peers. E. What you actually do at work has some relationship with your earnings, even if your job title isn’t changing. F. Claiming job turf gives an employee an advantage when it comes to job security, because they become harder to replace with a colleague or new hire.高三英语试卷 第 12 页 共 12 页 _______70_________ In Wilmers’ research, the most reliable predictor of an employee’s job turf was their work period of time at the organisation. The longer you stick around an organisation, the more likely you are to gain job turf. “This could be because managers become more likely to assign these workers turf, or because higher tenure workers get a better understanding of how the organisation works and are thereby more effective at establishing turf. IV. Summary Writing Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. 71. Why is America’s Milk Industry in so much trouble? For much of The 20th century, milk was a simple part of daily life in the U.S., as farmers raised cows, milkmen delivered bottles and children drank it at school. But those days are fading—a fact emphasized by the announcement on Jan. 5 by Borden Dairy, a milk processor, that it is filing for bankruptcy protection. Borden, which said it was impacted by “market challenges facing the dairy industry,” follows Dean Foods, America’s largest milk producer, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November. America has fallen out of love with drinking milk and people are substituting water bottles for milk cartons. The downturn has been tough on dairy processors like Borden and Dean, which buy fresh milk from farms and use techniques like pasteurization( 加 热 杀 菌 法 ) to create a consumer-safe beverage with a longer shelf life. For the past five years, thanks to technology that increased milk production, fresh-milk prices were relatively low. But prices began ticking up again last year, squeezing the processors’ already tight margins. “Declining sales in a thin-margin business is not a good recipe for success,” says Mark Stephenson, director of dairy policy analysis at the University of Wisconsin. (Americans are still eating cheese, butter and ice cream, but fluid-milk processors such as Dean and Borden aren’t big players in those businesses.) Milk processors are also facing competition from big retailers, which have set up their own processing plants. In 2018, Walmart opened a milk-processing plant in Indiana to serve hundreds of stores in the Midwest, taking away approximately 95 million gal. of milk-processing business from Dean Foods. On the other end of the supply chain, dairy farms are facing trouble of their own. The low prices that were a benefit to processors left small farmers struggling across the industry. The number of Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies in 2019 was up 24% from the previous year. “We’re trying our best to hang on,” says Mary Rieckmann, a dairy farmer in Wisconsin whose family has turned to GoFundMe to keep their century-old farm running. B Section B Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and a longer conversation, and you will be asked some questions on the passages and the conversation. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. Hip hop is getting its very own museum in its birthplace in New York State. Hip hop is the name for the music, dance and fashion culture that developed around 50 years ago in the New York City town of The Bronx. The permanent home of the Universal Hip Hop Museum, set to open in 2023, celebrates the cultureʼs history. The museumʼs Executive Director said “there isnʼt a physical place that is devoted to the celebration of hip hop history and culture.” He told the Reuters news agency that the museum started as an idea about eight years ago. Rappers and musicians wanted to make sure that the stories can be told accurately by the people who created the history themselves. Hip hop was born in the south Bronx in the 1970s. The dancing, rapping parts of hip-hop grew out of the difficult inner-city environment. Hip hop has since developed into part of popular culture. The new exhibit tells about the early days of hip hop. The exhibit will be replaced every six months with the next period in the cultureʼs development. When the museum is complete, the 5,570 square meter space will have interactive exhibits, live shows, film screenings and conferences. One room will have an interactive device. The device was created with Microsoft and the MIT Center for Advanced Virtuality. It takes visitors 高三英语试卷 第 16 页 共 12 页 on a hip hop history trip based on their reactions to different characters in a game. It forms a custom narrative of hip hop history based on their musical preferences. The grand opening, in 2023, is planned to mark 50 years of hip hop. Work on the project will begin in July. Questions: 11. What is the Museum mentioned in the passage committed to? 12. When did hip hop music probably come into being? 13. What can the interactive device created with Microsoft and MIT do? BCC Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. If an animal is moved from its home in the tropics to cold climate, it will die if it is not kept warm. And animals accustomed to cold climates will die if they are moved to the tropics. Many plants, too, will die if they are removed from the place where they normally grow and are transplanted into an unfamiliar soil. Almost every species is adapted to life in a particular place by its organs and their functions and by its permanent habits. The specialized adaptation has great advantages. It enables many organisms to survive under different conditions. It also has disadvantages, for it means that the life of most species is controlled by local conditions. Living things are not scattered over the earth at random; most species have definite habits for living places. Most living things are slaves to their environment. Some can alter certain features of their environment to suit themselves; many birds and insects can build elaborate nests to provide shelter for their young. But these skills are restricted and highly specialized. Most organisms must adapt their bodies to fit in with their surroundings, and since they can adapt only for particular surroundings, they are found only in places where they can live successfully with the least effort. Plants find these favorable places by trial and error. The wind carries their seeds great distances. If the seeds land in a favorable environment they grow and reproduce. If they are deposited in an unfavorable environment they die. Animals, on the other hand, search until they find a favorable environment. BBA Questions: 14. What’s the disadvantage of specialized adaptation? 15. In what ways are animals different from plants? 16. What is the main idea of the passage? Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following dialogue. W: Hello, Jack. Is everything ready for the trip this Saturday? M: Everything’s set — we’ll have plenty of time to get downtown to the art gallery for the reception. W: It’s great you could organize this. 高三英语试卷 第 17 页 共 12 页 M: I figured I might as well make a student event out of it. Working here at the Student Activities Center made me realize how popular our activities are. I figured there would be interest in it. W: Well, you’ve done a super job organizing everything! Those posters look great… and they went up in no time! M: Thanks… and I’m glad you could approve the funding for us. W: My pleasure…uh, by the way… how’re you getting to the gallery from the train station? M: Well, there’re buses that run downtown. I realize it’s last-minute, but… well — the weather for Saturday’s supposed to be really nice — sunny, warm…it’d be a great opportunity to walk the High Line. W: The what? M: Oh, I guess not everyone’s heard of it… it’s this amazing park in the sky! W: A park in the sky? M: Yes. There was this old train line, one of those “elevated lines”, the kind that run high above the streets. This one was used for cargo, not passengers. But when it got cheaper to move cargo by truck, they stopped using it. It was abandoned for a long time and then, a few years back, the city agreed to turn the tracks and surrounding area into a park! It goes from the train station all the way downtown, near the gallery. It’s really cool! There’s grass and flowers everywhere…and, since you’re high up, you get these great views of the city. W: Sounds wonderful. But have you considered that not everybody might be interested in walking that far. They might prefer the bus. M: Couldn’t we just split up, you know, have some of us walk, and the others take the bus? W: But remember, Jack, the poster advertises as the tour leader. Not everybody is adventurous about getting around the city. You would need to find someone to accompany people on the bus. Then you can take the walkers. M: Yes, but who? The trip is in two days. W: Well, I know how to get around the city. M: That would be great if you can come and join us! Questions: 17. Why does the man go to see the woman? 18. What point does the man make about his job in the Student Activities Center? 19. Which of the following statements is correct about the history of the High Line? 20.
