A
A teacher in the US asked students to finish the sentence: “ I wish my teacher
knew…” However, we have recently asked teachers what they wish their students knew.
Jackie Schneider, music teacher, LondonI wish my students knew that education is not a competitive sport. No child is a
number. Levels tell you more about the school than the child. In the same way, some kids
take longer to learn to walk and talk and some take longer to learn literacy and numeracy
skills(识字和算术技能), which does not matter. Every child has the potential to be gifted
and talented. I wish they knew that reading could bring them more joy than they could
ever imagine and that their singing voice is beautiful.
Avais Qureshi, citizenship teacher, London
I wish they knew that life is about so much more than who approves of you and who
doesn't. A lot of kids are too hung-up on peer(同龄人) groups. I wish they knew that
this time doesn't return: they need to focus on their top tasks and getting the grades they
need.
Nandia Helal, Langdon Academy, London
I wish my students knew how hard we work. I have them on my mind for 12-15
hours a day. If I'm out on the weekend, there’s always a sense of guilt----like I should be
marking or planning lessons for the upcoming week. I never feel like I'm doing enough
for their education.
Geoff Barton, head teacher, King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmunds
I wish my students knew that while school and qualifications matter a lot, they are
merely doors into our future: the really important things in our lives, and the people who
will mean most to us, all lie ahead. Students should seize every opportunity now, in and
beyond the classroom, to develop the skill, qualities and knowledge ready for the
adventures that lie ahead.
21. Jackie Schneider thinks that _________.
A. it's easier for kids to learn to walk than to learn literacy skills
B. it does not matter whether a kid learns quickly or slowly
C. education is something like a competitive sport
D. reading is more joyful than singing
22. Avais Qureshi wants kids _________.
A. to value others' views
B. to return to the traditional times
C. to be harmonious with peer fellows
D. to concentrate on their own business
23. What is Nandia Helal like?
A. She is a responsible teacher.
B. She feels content with her teaching.
C. She wants her students to work hard.
D. She thinks she has done too much for education.
24. According to Geoff Barton, _________.
A. qualifications matter much more
B. skills, qualities and knowledge are doors into the future
C. students develop different skills and qualities merely in class
D. students will experience really important things in the future
25. What does the underlined word “they" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. My students. B. School and qualifications.
C. The really important things. D. The skills, qualities and knowledge.
B
Understand your directional future, and plan ahead, but most of all plan a life which
is full of excitement and a life which you'll enjoy living.
As the manager of the World Youth Organization, I must say, “It is not quite easy to
get this position.” My parents have always been top supporters for my educational
progress rather than my true passion, which of course is the World Youth Organization.
There have been many arguments when it comes to the controversial topics. Time after
time I have to protect my belief and hope it will come true one day.
Proving one wrong, especially your parents, is a tough ride. But when you love
something, you constantly put up a fight. You stand for what you believe in, which is one
of the most important aspects of life. Any parent or carer would require too much, “You
must go to university”, “You will not get anywhere without that degree.” All of those
sentences make the perfect sense, when you’re dreaming of becoming a nurse, doctor,
teacher or scientist, or a career path which requires that important degree. But I believe
what many parents see is that when one has the degree, he/she is automatically set on the
right path of life.
However, when the truth is bitter, it doesn't always go smoothly. If I am not full of
passion, will I lead a happy life? Possibly. Will I be true to myself ? No. However, if you
are enthusiastic about the subject you study, you are willing to do everything to make it a
reality.
A person can take many paths in life, and you just need to find the best one for
yourself. I strongly agree with considering something to fall back on just in case plan A
doesn't go well. Stick with your passion as plan A, unless staying in college can ensure
you are going to be okay in the future.
Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard, be devoted and above all, don't let
anyone limit your dreams.
26. What attitude do the writer's parents hold towards his choice?

    view?
A. You go to university. B. You listen to your parents.
C. You hold on to your belief. D. You study hard for the degree.
28. What does the underlined part “plan A” in the fifth paragraph refer to?
A. Your passion. B. Your happy life,
C. The subject you study. D. The college you will go to.
29. What is the most important thing in exciting life, according to the last paragraph?A. Love. B. Hard work. C. Devotion. D. Independence.

Being in the midst of a pandemic lockdown can make people feel worried. But
nothing has shown this panicky behavior more than storing specifically toilet paper.
Seemingly transcending borders and cultures, people from all over the world,
including the US, UK and Japan, have been clearing supermarket shelves mainly for this
necessity. But what’s the reason for this sudden toilet paper storing? You can understand
panic buying food, but do we really need that much toilet paper?
Steven Taylor, author of the book The Psychology of Pandemics, told the
Independent that our toilet paper storing is a product of our disgust(厌恶). During a
pandemic, people’s sensitivity to disgust increases, like when you move aside if someone
nearby sneezes (打喷嚏).
“Disgust is like an alarm … and what better tool for removing disgusting material
than toilet paper. I think this is how it became a conditioned symbol of safety,” he said.
Writing for The Conversation, Niki Edwards of The Queensland University of
Technology said, “When people hear about the novel coronavirus, they are afraid of
losing control. And toilet paper feels like a way to maintain control over health and
cleanliness.”
Another one of the most important reasons behind this toilet paper trend, according
to the BBC, is the snowball effect. Due to its reports, both in the news and social media,
people naturally ask, “Will there be enough toilet paper for my family and me?” This
leads to more people following the crowd and buying toilet paper because of their fear of
missing out.
“Fear spreads easily. So when you see people around you buying things in a
panicky way, it’s going to make you feel more anxious,” wrote American psychologist
Baruch Fischhoff for CNBC.
While there are, of course, selfish people who store just because they can, it’s worth
keeping things in perspective. Remember, just as countries are cooperating to find a
vaccine, we must cooperate to ensure that everyone has their share of necessities.
31. The underlined word “transcending” in the second paragraph probably means “____”.
A. going beyond
B. connecting with
C. getting an understanding of
D. making good use of
32. According to Dr Steven Taylor, what does this toilet paper trend result from?
A. The desire to get rid of disgusting material.
B. The fear of losing control over cleanliness.
C. The frequent reporting on toilet paper.
D. The selfish side of human nature.
33. Whose words are quoted to explain “the snowball effect”?
A. Steven Taylor’s B. Niki Edwards’
C. Baruch Fischhoff ’s D. The author’s
34. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To explore the bad effects of the toilet paper trend.
B. To explain why people tend to store pile toilet paper.
C. To criticize those people who store toilet paper.
D. To discuss people’s different attitudes toward the toilet paper trend.
35. Which of the following statement do you think the author will probably NOT agree
with?
A. The toilet paper storing can relieve people’s anxiety.
B. It’s selfish of those to store too much toilet paper than they need.
C. Panic buying is quite understandable.
D. It’s better for us to stay calm and reasonable so as not to follow the toilet paper trend.

With keepers to feed them, vets to cure them, and no predators (捕食者) to eat them,
animals in a zoo usually live much 61 (long) than animals in the wild. Zoo life is safe, but it can also be boring.
In the wild, survival is 62 full-time job, consisting of finding food, taking care
of babies, and steering clear of all the things that might want to eat you. 63
(compare) with their wild cousins, says one zoo vet, 200 animals are unemployed.
Scientists 64 (observe) animals in their natural environments realized that
some zoo animals were doing all sorts of 65 (nature) things those species don’t do
in the wild. Tigers paced back and forth 66 (end). Elephants moved their heads
up and down. These are signs of boredom and stress. And scientists have learned that
being stressed out can actually make animals and people sick.
Giving zoo animals food and shelter 67 ( be ) not enough to keep them
healthy. They also need something 68 ( do ). These days, problems likes pacing are
less common because zoos try to make life interesting for animals that live there, with
habitats, games, and even toys 69 encourage natural skills and behaviors. These
things are just as important for the animals’ good health 70 a proper diet or a visit
from the vet.

第二节 读后续写 (20 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together
and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when,
on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel.
We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to
∧have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry
went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a
great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him
together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he
learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not
deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just
ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well.
However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had
some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they
didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of
fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of
his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called
Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to
help him.

【参考答案】
Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned. Just at the
moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the
riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached
Robert just as he was sinking the last time. By great effort, and with much danger to
himself, he brought Robert to the shore.
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having
called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to
Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily.
He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this,
Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do
evil.

Text 1
W: Hi, John. Would you like to go to a badminton game after school tomorrow?
M: I’d love to, Sandy, but I’ve already arranged to go to the cinema with Grace.
Text 2
M: I don’t think I should wear a dark shirt for a wedding. It just isn’t appropriate.
W: Well, the only clean shirts you have are the white one, the black one and the dark blue one.
M: So, there is only one choice.
Text 3
W: Look at the holes in the wall. It’s terrible. I can’t face having to repair it. And the bathroom really
smells.
M: Look at the floor! It is old and broken. I really want to move out of this house.
Text 4
W: I was marking exam papers until midnight last night. You were right to quit teaching. It’s tiring.
M: Journalists work long hours as well, you know — just ask my secretary.
Text 5
M: It seems to be raining. I came out without a coat. The only thing that I can use to keep the rain off
will be the newspaper.
W: Luckily, I brought my umbrella — and there’s a spare one in my bag that you can use.
Text 6
W: I’m going to an art show tonight. Do you want to go with me?
M: I’m not a huge fan of art. I don’t understand it most of the time.
W: You know some animals are at the risk of extinction, so the artists picked up trash in the ocean and
made sculptures of those animals with that.
M: That’s not hard to understand. So they only used garbage? No clay?
W: Yes. So far, they have cleaned up 26 tons of garbage. But that’s only a small part.
M: That’s so much! How sad! Now I’m interested in them.
Text 7
M: Where were you last Friday evening?
W: I had to be awake very early on Saturday morning, so I couldn’t come.
M: That’s the first time I’ve known you to miss a book club meeting in five years.
W: Well, some things can’t be avoided. In the past I planned holidays ahead of time so that they didn’t
get in the way of Fridays.
M: So, what happened this time?W: A family emergency. It took up the whole of Saturday and Sunday. My aunt wanted me there.
M: What’s the problem?
W: She was ill and wanted to see me. The doctor was there as well. He thought my aunt would be OK
soon, though.
M: That’s good. I’m glad to hear it.
Text 8
W: I don’t want to cook. Let’s go out for fast food.
M: Sure, but no McDonald’s.
W: How about KFC?
M: Why do you want to have American fast food in Tokyo?
W: When I think of fast food, that’s what comes to mind.
M: But you are in a country that has much better fast food than that! You can go to a small restaurant
to get some soup. There is a lot of good street food, too. I think some of the best food here is street
food! Didn’t you learn anything online before coming here?
W: Well, yes. I didn’t feel like going to McDonald’s even once, because the Chinese fast food was
excellent.
M: It’s the same here. Hurry up and get ready. I’ll take you on a tour of my favorite Japanese street
food tonight.
W: OK. Wait a moment. I will change my clothes.
Text 9
W: Your father and I are so proud of you.
M: But I am so frightened.
W: Don’t be silly. You don’t have to say anything on stage.
M: I know, but all these people will be looking at me.
W: Good. We want to tell everyone how clever our son is. It seems like a few years ago that your
primary school teacher was telling us how bright you were.
M: Other schoolmates will be getting their degrees as well.
W: You are the only one we want to see. We have traveled a long way to see this. It takes about 13
hours to fly to London from Beijing.
M: I will be glad when this is over with.
W: Maybe we can say something to make you happier.
M: Like what?
W: Tomorrow, on our way back home, we are going to take you to Paris for a 3-day holiday. This is
our gift to you for working so hard.
M: Thank you, but you needn’t have done that. I am just glad to have made you happy. Plus, my
degree ensures I will have a good future.
Text 10
This coming Friday is parents’ evening. If you have not done so, please give your parents the
booking form that was handed out on Monday and have them sign and return it before Wednesday,
otherwise their appointment will not be made. Please come to the correct classroom 10 minutes before
the scheduled time. The parents’ meeting will last about 30 minutes and discuss your grades in this
year. Then, our special advisor will also be holding a lecture on application forms of the university
you wish to attend. It will last 20 minutes. She will discuss best practices for filling out the form, what
experience to list and who to ask for references. If you are part of the football team, you may apply for
a sports scholarship. At last, Mr. Jones will spend 15 minutes discussing the different forms and
requirements needed to study abroad. I know a few of you are eager to do so. I myself was a foreign
student when I first came here. It is a great learning experience to spend time living in another
country.
