Watch movies “If you see the movie version of your favourite book, you’ re likely to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the words in it,” says Neuman, professor of Childhood and Literacy Education at New York University. “Seeing and reading something on the same topic is really important.” Read magazines If you want to improve vocabulary, don’t just flip though your favourite magazine, really read it. B Michaela Clovis is a neighbor of mine. Last year, one of her classmates made fun of her hair. “She said it doesn’t look right and doesn’t match my skin, "said Michaela. Michaela is Irish, German, Native American, and African American. She has pale skin and reddish yellow hair, but she is not white. Soon, a few classmates joined the teasing, Michaela said she felt “small and alone”. But she stopped the teasing without getting angry. Here’s how she did it. First, Michaela talked to her parents. Her mother, Donna, told Michaela’s teacher and also suggested that Michaela not face the teasing alone. Next, Donna told Michaela about the different people in her family, and their love for each other. She taught her that people of all races are beautiful. “Everyone’s skin or hair color is beautiful and you have to believe that for yourself. You have to learn to be confident and comfortable in your own skin and hair. Forget what your classmates say, as it’s just a period most kids go through --picking on others because they are ‘different’! Just don’t let it get to you and you’ll be okay! Be proud of who you are and love yourself for being a kind and generous human being,” Michaela’s mother said This made Michaela feel better. After that, Michaela was more confident. The next time she was teased, Michaela said, “I know that I’m mixed, and I’m proud of it. She stuck to that answer until the teasing finally ended. 24. It’s possible to end a bad situation without anger. B. Students should be taught to love each other.C. People who tease others should be punished. D. Teasing is popular among classmates. C Let’s face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People who drink diet sodas hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn’t drink diet sodas. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas people drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler. The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years. While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don’t lose weight at all. “We weren’t seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,” said Rogers. So why would diet sodas cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories. A related study found some sweeteners(甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. “Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, "said Helen P. Hazuda, a professor at the University of Texas of Medicine. “They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.” 28. People drink diet sodas to ______. A. enjoy the taste B. stay in fashion C. achieve weight loss D. gain more energy 29. The new study suggests that drinking diet sodas______. A. causes people to become heavier B. helps people to be healthier C. makes people much thinner D. offers people more energy 30. We can learn from the passage that_______. A. regular sodas make people lose more weight B. diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food C. diet sodas do help reduce calories D. most blood diseases come from diet sodas 31. The underlined word “They” in the last paragraph probably refers to “________”. A. sweeteners B. diet sodas and artificial sweeteners C. sodas D. diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers D Stop that habit if you want to improve your finances. Much of what separates wealthy people from average people is mental-- rich people simply think, act, and make choices differently than the rest of us. In “Secrets of the Millionaire (百万富翁)Mind”, author and self- made millionaire T. Harv Eker identifies a harmless daily habit average people engage in that the rich refuse to: complaining. “Complaining is the worst possible thing you could do for your health or your wealth,” Eker writes. When you complain, you’re focusing on what is wrong with your life--and what you focus on tends to expand. Eker explains. “like attracts like,” the self-made millionaire writes. “When you are complaining, you are actually attracting ‘crap’ into your life. This leaves very little room for growth, particularly financial growth. A fact often overlooked is that your friendships and relationships could also have a major impact on your financial success. Steve Siebold, who interviewed over 1, 200 rich people, found that the wealthy are careful when choosing their friends, and their choices have implications(影响))for their success and their net worth. Eker makes a similar point about negativity. Separating yourself from other complainers is just as important as resisting the urge to complain personally, he emphasizes: “Negative energy is infectious. Plenty of people, however, love to hang out and listen to complainers. Why? It’s simple: They’re waiting for their turn!” It’s an easy cycle to fall into, but a costly one. If you’re looking to grow your wealth, stop complaining. Helping yourself out by surrounding yourself with a successful crowd. “Remind yourself that you are creating your life and that at every moment you will be attracting either success or crap into your life,” he advises. “It is important for you to choose your thoughts and words wisely!” 32. When people are complaining, they usually concentrate on _____. A. the negative side of life B. the improvement of finances C. the choice of their friends D. the impossible thing 33. What did Ststeve Siebold conclude after interviewing over 1, 200 rich people? A. Making friends with good persons can bring in money. B People’ s financial success results from their good health. C. People who failed had no implications for their success. D. Choosing friends would not affect anything of the people. 34. By saying “They’re waiting for their turn”, the author means______. A. they would soon complain about something B. they looked forward to their wealth C. they resisted the urge to complain personally D. they separated themselves from others 35. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. Complain, and you will achieve nothing. B. Attracted by a success, you will become stronger. C. Make wise choices, and you’ll be wealthy. D. Surrounded by successful people, you will succeed. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。其中有两项多余。 Top3 Self- Discipline(自律) Techniques Self-discipline is the key to leading a healthier, happier and more successful life. 36We have shared some self-discipline techniques below.
