I didn’t know who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to allow me to stay the night at my best friend’s house. Though I knew I wouldn’t tell her about my parents ’situation, I was looking forward to getting out of the house. I was in the middle of packing up my things when suddenly the power went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with my grandpa until the power came back on. I was really disappointed because I felt that we did not have much to talk about. But I knew he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told him that I’d stay with him until the power was restored. He was quite happy and said, “Great opportunity.” “What is it?”I asked. “To talk, you and I, ”he said.“To hold a private little meeting about what we’re going to do with your mom and dad, and what we’re going to do with ourselves now that we’re in the situation we are in.” “But we can’t do anything about it, Grandpa, ”I said, surprised that here was someone with whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same “boat” as I was. And that’s how the most unbelievable friendship between my grandfather and me started. Sitting there in the dark, we talked about our feeling and fears of life—from how fast things change, to how they sometimes don’t change fast enough. That night, because the power went out, I found a new friend, with whom I could safely talk about all my fears and pains, whatever they may be. Suddenly, the lights all came back on. “Well,” he said,“ I guess that means you’ll want to go now. I really like our talk. I hope the power will go out every few nights!” 24. How I began my friendship with grandpa. B. The same boat grandpa and I once rode. C. What a terrible experience I have had. D. A night at my best friend’s house. C Tomorrow’s World The home of the future won’t be completely different and we will be living in houses and flats just as we do today. But people will want to shape their homes to match their dreams. No two homes will be the same. People will be able to buy “house kits” containing a basic house structure, with moveable walls, doors and windows. They will put together the different parts to create the home they want. Many jobs that we do today will disappear, others will still exist but will change and new jobs will be created. Skilled workers such as builders, gardeners and electricians won’t disappear because machines can’t replace them. Teachers will still exist because students need human contact. But they will be using modern technology in class more and students will be working more from home. The medical technology revolution and space travel will create new jobs which we can only imagine today. Space holidays will develop in the future, but these holidays won’t be for everyone because they won’t be cheap. Short space trips will develop first, then space hotels will orbit the earth where it will be possible to have a longer vacation. By the end of the next century, there will be holiday centres on the moon with leisure facilities for families. Paper won ’t exist in the future. Instead, there will be e ⁃paper which people will be able to use over and over again. This will develop in order to save natural resources. D Too much TV⁃watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children. One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third⁃graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs. A second study, looking at nearly 1,000 grown ⁃ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26⁃ year ⁃olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don’t rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters may watch lots of TV. Their study measured the TV habits of 26⁃year⁃ olds between ages 5 and 15. Those with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2 1/2 hours for those who had no education beyond high school. In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest, while those with no bedroom TV but with home computers scored the highest. While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn’t have TVs in their bedrooms. 32. What can we learn from the California study? A. The low⁃scoring group might have watched much TV. B. The low⁃scoring group may not be interested in math. C. Those unable to go to college might have watched much TV. D. Those with computers in their bedrooms scored the highest. 33. How does the author find the New Zealand study results? A. They are perfect. B. They are unreliable. C. They are reasonable. D. They are meaningless. 34. What advice is given according to the last two paragraphs? A. More time should be spent on computers. B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV. C. TV sets shouldn’t be allowed in children’s bedrooms. D. Further studies on high⁃achieving students should be done. 35. What would be the best title for this text? A. Computers or Television B. Effects of Television on Children C. Studies on TV and College Education D. Whether you have experienced it or not, they are all acts of bullying. Unfortunately, most of us know little about the serious, lasting harm bullying can cause. Recent studies show that one in four children are faced with bullying at one time or another. Those who bully need to be dealt with carefully and most of all, the cycle must be stopped. 36 ● Show no reaction to their bullying. Do not show the bullies(恃强凌弱者)that you feel hurt and they’ve succeeded in affecting you; just walk away as if you didn’t mind it. 37 So reacting to them will only encourage them further. The bully wants attention and if you show them that they are hurting you, they will get more pleasure out of doing it. ● 38 You can learn a few self⁃defense moves. This is very important when you need to fight (which hopefully you won’t). You don’t need a black belt, just tips on self⁃defense.39 Know your strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Know what you want and what you’re capable of. This self⁃confidence can be helpful when dealing with verbal (言语)bullies, as their words won’t reach your core (核心). Verbal bullies usually require an audience and their words are rarely based on what’s true but rather what’s catchy. ● Report all bullying to an authority figure. Consider your parents, school teachers, principal, the police, or someone else who can deal with or punish the bully and protect your safety. It’s important that you talk to someone about your problem to get it to end. 40 A. Don’t fight the bully. B. Build your own strength. C. And this is brave of you to come forward. D. It’s important to keep calm when you are scared. E. Here are three tips to follow if someone bullies you. F. In addition, develop a deep understanding of yourself. G.
