But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.‎ October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers' Week for their newcomers. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.‎ However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect (前景) of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nervewracking (令人焦虑不安的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?‎ Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don't rush into anything that you'll regret for the next three years.‎ Here is some advice from past students on how to survive Freshers' Week:‎ ‎●Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette(礼节). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.‎ ‎●Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a good start in making friends.‎ ‎●Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you'll be to meet new people than if you're someone who never leaves his room.‎ ‎●Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you're in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you're friendly.‎ So with a bit of clever planning and effort, Freshers' Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you’ll be passing on your experience to next year's new recruits.‎ ‎21.Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the passage?‎ A. October is generally the busiest month for universities. ‎ B. The first week of your every year at university is called Freshers' Week.‎ C. A bit of planning can make Freshers' Week easier.[来源:学*科*网Z*X*X*K]‎ D. It's a good idea to put a doorstop in your door.‎ ‎22.The underlined word “recruits” in the last paragraph refers to ________.‎ ‎ A. courses B. challenges C. neighbors D. freshers ‎23.We can infer from the 4th paragraph that ________.‎ ‎ A. the newcomers usually miss the days living at home ‎ B. most of the students in the UK spend three years in universities ‎ ‎ C. all the new students will make new friends and join certain clubs ‎ D. many freshers are worried about how to fit university life ‎24.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.‎ A.tell the newcomers how to make a new start in universities B.introduce something about higher education system of the UK[来源:学科网ZXXK]‎ C.discuss something about the Freshers' Week in the ‎UK D.advise the freshmen how to behave well in the beginning B ‎ “CLASS, this is John Evans,” Mrs Parmele announced, trying to sound enthusiastic. We saw a boy in oversized worn-out (穿旧了的) clothes and shoes. John looked around and smiled, hoping somebody would smile back. Nobody did. He kept on grinning (咧嘴笑) anyway. I held my breath, hoping Mrs Parmele wouldn’t notice the empty desk next to mine. She did, and pointed him in that direction. He looked over at me as he sat down, but I looked away. By the end of his first week, John was at the bottom of our school’s social ladder (阶梯). “It’s ‎ his own fault (错误),” I told my mother one evening at dinner. “He barely even knows how to count.” As I ate lunch with him the next day and listened to him, however, I realized that John was actually pleasant to be around. After lunch, I decided that I would be John’s friend. One night, as Mother tucked me into bed (给我掖好被子), I said: “Mom, tomorrow is John’s birthday, and he’s not going to get anything. Nobody even cares.” “Don’t worry,” Mom said as she kissed me goodnight. “I’m sure everything will turn out fine.” At breakfast the next morning, I said I wasn’t feeling well. “How would you like it if your only friend didn’t show up on your birthday?” Mother asked gently. I thought it over for a moment and then kissed her goodbye. I wished John a happy birthday first thing in the morning, and his embarrassed smile showed me that he was glad I had remembered. By mid-afternoon I had almost decided that birthdays weren’t that important. Then, as Mrs Parmele was writing on the blackboard, I heard a familiar voice singing the birthday song. Moments later, Mother came through the door with a tray (托盘) of cupcakes. She was carrying a present with a red bow on top. Mrs Parmele joined in. Mother found John looking like a deer in car headlights. She put the cupcakes and gift on his desk and said, “Happy birthday, John.” My friend kindly shared his cupcakes with the class, taking the tray from desk to desk. I caught Mother watching me. She smiled and winked (使眼色). John Evans moved on shortly thereafter, and I never heard from him again. But whenever I hear that familiar song, I remember the soft tones of my mother’s voice, the happiness in a boy’s eyes and the taste of the sweetest cupcake.‎ ‎25. What is the article mainly about? A. But Born in China, which came out on Aug ‎12 in the mainland, may be important for Chinese filmmakers who want to get into nature-themed films. The movie, directed by Chinese ‎ filmmaker Lu Chuan, was shot in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) and shows the animals’ lives during different seasons. Born in China not only brings to audiences the lives of animals that are rarely seen in the wild – giant pandas, snow leopards (雪豹), golden monkeys, and Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊), for example – but also shows audiences Chinese traditional culture. The film mainly focuses on life and love within three animal families – giant pandas, golden monkeys and snow leopards. A symbol of China, the giant panda is both black and white. Its body is thought to show yin and yang, which ancient Chinese ideas of the world were based on. Yin shows darkness and yang shows brightness. The panda’s gentle nature also shows how yin and yang, when perfectly balanced, lead to peace and harmony. These can be seen in the documentary when a giant panda mother guides her growing baby to gradually look for independence and explore the world. Unlike the shy giant pandas, monkeys always have strong personalities. In fact, perhaps China’s most colorful literary creation is a monkey: the Monkey King, from the epic (史诗般的) Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) novel Journey to the West (《西游记》) by author Wu Cheng’en. The monkey has many conflicting (相矛盾的) traits (特性). On one hand it stands for impatience, as in the Chinese phrase that translates as “monkey anxious”, but on the other hand, its use in Chinese points to cleverness and energy. Born in China follows a 2-year-old golden monkey who feels like his life has been changed for the worse by his new baby sister, quickly joins up with a group of other free-spirited monkeys, but finally returns to his family and understands the meaning of responsibility. While the golden monkey learns to protect his family, a mother snow leopard – an animal rarely caught on camera – also faces the very real drama of raising her two cubs (幼崽) in a harsh (严酷的) environment. The leopards, known for their rapid attacks and quick footwork (脚步), have inspired a form of pictographic boxing (象形拳) in Shaolin martial arts. “Born in China is a means to show off Chinese traditional culture,” director Lu told the Binhai Times newspaper. “From five-animal exercises to pictographic boxing, Chinese people have learned from wild animals since ancient times. This is why I felt an urge to shoot this type of nature-themed documentary.”‎ ‎33. In the morning, they prefer to sleep a little more rather than spend the time having breakfast. Some parents are too busy to take care of their children. They have no time to cook breakfast for them. So they just give them some money to buy something to eat. But some boys spend the money playing games while some of the girls give up eating breakfast to keep slim. ‎ As a result, they can’t do well at school without breakfast. Students can’t concentrate in class because they have no breakfast. They get worse results. What’s more, it’s also bad for their health.‎ As far as I’m concerned, breakfast is the most important meal. We students should have a good breakfast so that we can keep fit and have enough energy to have classes. In addition, parents should make sure that their children have breakfast every morning. If they are too busy to take care of their children, they can buy some food home so that the children can bring some to school. ‎ 听力原文 ‎1. Man: I’ve got my camera with me. How can you get so far and eating out.‎ Man: When I got my first job back in 1982 and started travelling. I had no other choice but eat out I found that I felt different due to what I was eating, so I tried to find places that served food that made me feel good. The secret was the quality of the food and how well the food was prepared. I made an effort to find out good restaurants as well as nice dishes.‎ Woman: How did you manage to make a list of 218 favorite restaurants?‎ Man: I’ve lived in cities and when I moved back to Sweden from the United States, people asked me where to go and eat and went to the cities I know. I got a lot of ideas. Then I wrote about restaurants for a Swedish club magazine and some suggested I gather information about restaurants together since I had all the facts about the restaurants I’ve been to. I started to do that. ‎ Woman: How do you find restaurants?‎ Man: The best way is to ask the people there. I may talk to the people at the street market or take a walk and look for place for myself. I never asked hotel clerks or taxi drivers. I don’t go either restaurants or places with menus too difficult to understand.‎ ‎10. ‎ Man: At the beginning of the tour, we all started the most important place at my town which is the Plaza Leon. The Plaza Leon is more than 100 years old. It’s a gathering place for young people on Friday and Saturday nights, and for parents and children on Sunday afternoon. Four streets lead to the Plaza which have white sidewalks and tree lined. Hemandes Street which was named after writers born in the city contains all of the food stalls fish markets and vegetable stands. Femando Street which was named after a famous educator is where all of the government offices, shops and houses. Via del Mar Street which is the only street which has old stone surfaces. Finally we came to the Hewish’s Street on which there are two universities, one of which is the most famous university in my country. That’s why it’s my favorite street of all. ‎
