If you lived in the Mediterranean, for instance, you would consider octopus (章鱼) a great delicacy. You would not be able to understand why some people find it repulsive. On the other hand, your stomach would turn at the idea of frying potatoes in animal fat ---the normally accepted practice in many northern countries. The sad truth is that most of us have been brought up to eat certain foods and we stick to them all our lives.‎ No creature has received more praise and abuse than the common garden snail (蜗牛). Cooked in wine, snails are a great luxury in various parts of the world. There are countless people who, ever since their early years, have learned to associate snails with food. My friend, Robert, lives in a country where snails are not liked. As his flat is in a large town, he has no garden of his own. For years he has been asking me to collect snails from my garden and take them to him.‎ The idea never appealed to me very much, but one day, after a heavy shower, I happened to be walking in my garden when I noticed a huge number of snails taking a stroll on some of my prized plants. Acting on a sudden impulse, I collected several dozen, put them in a paperbag, and took them to Robert. Robert was delighted to see me and equally pleased with my little gift. I left the bag in the hall and Robert and I went into the living room where we talked for a couple of hours. I had forgotten all about the snails when Robert suddenly said that I must stay for dinner. Snails would, of course, be the main dish. I did not fancy the idea and I reluctantly followed Robert out of the room. To our dismay, we saw that there were snails everywhere: they had escaped from the paper bag and had taken complete possession of the hall! I have never been able to look at a snail since then.‎ ‎24. The underlined word “repulsive” in Paragraph 1 most probably means . ‎ A. disgusting B. pleasant C. acceptable D. delicious ‎25. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that when collecting the snails, the author .‎ A. was glad that he could share them with his friend B. was angry because they might damage his beloved plants C. was excited about being able to give his friend a surprise D. was depressed because it was hard to catch them all ‎26. The author finds that snails .‎ A. are as delicious as octopus B. are disliked in his hometown来源:学科*‎ C. are a kind of controversial food D. are as popular as fried potatoes ‎27. The best title for the passage might be “ ”.‎ A. One Man’s Meat is Another Man’s Poison B. Foods and Cultures ‎ C. Snail and Octopus D. People Are Illogical in Front of Delicacies C With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in depression, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.‎ How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you.‎ ‎ I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?‎ ‎ Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.‎ ‎28. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that ___________.‎ A. it makes people more confident B. it can pick up people’s spirits C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world D. it can help people get on well with others ‎29. The author answers the question in the second paragraph with ___________.‎ ‎ A. facts and descriptions B. evidence and argument ‎ C. examples and conclusion D. stories and persuasion ‎30.The phrase“busting a gut" in the third paragraph can be replaced by __________.‎ ‎ A. explaining carefully B. speaking loud C. keeping silent D. laughing hard ‎31. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to __________.‎ ‎ A. talk about his own understanding of humor ‎ B. encourage people to be humorous in daily life ‎ C. introduce a practical way to get through daily life D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life D When people think of improving their diet, they often talk about eating more fruits and vegetables. Others want to eat more fish and less red meat, in addition to reducing the amount of food they eat. But they can improve their diets even more with just a simple addition. American researchers have found that a diet rich in spices can help reduce the harmful effects of eating high fat meals.‎ Pennsylvania State University Associate Professor Shiela West led an investigation of the health effects of a spice-rich diet. Her team knew that a high-fat meal produces high levels of triglycerides(甘油三脂), a kind of fat, in the blood. She said, “If this happens too frequently, or if triglyceride levels are raised too much, your risk of heart disease is increased.”‎ As part of the study, her team prepared meals on two separate days for six men between the ages of 30 and 65. The men were overweight, but healthy. The researchers added about 30 milliliters of spices to each serving of the test meal, which included chicken curry, Italian herb bread and a cinnamon(肉桂树皮)biscuit. The meal for the control group was the same, but it did not include any spices.‎ During the experiment, the researchers removed blood from the men every 30 minutes for three hours. They found that antioxidant activity(抗氧化活性) in the blood of the men who ate the spicy meal was 13 percent higher than it was for the men who did not. In addition, insulin(胰岛素) activity dropped by about 20 percent in the men who ate the spicy food.‎ Shiela West says many scientists think that oxidative stress leads to heart disease. And what exactly is oxidative stress? Think of an apple that has been cut in half and set aside for half an hour or so. The cut side of the apple turns brown. That is a simple explanation of what happens when oxidative stress comes in contact with the inside and outside of our bodies.‎ Professor West says, “Antioxidants, like spices, may be important in reducing oxidative stress and thus reducing the risk of chronic disease.” She adds that the level of spices used in the study ‎ provided the same amount of antioxidants found in 150 milliliters of red wine or about 38 grams of dark chocolate.‎ ‎32. What does the author advise people to do in their diets?‎ A. Eating large amounts of food. B. Eating less fruits and vegetables. ‎ C. Eating more vegetables and fish. D. Eating small amounts of food with spices. ‎ ‎33. What is the function of spices according to the passage? ‎ A. To help people lose weight. B. To cure chronic disease. ‎ C. To reduce the risk of heart disease. D. To cause oxidative stress. ‎ ‎34. What happened to the men who ate the spicy meal according to the experiment? ‎ A. The antioxidant activity in their blood became increased. ‎ B. The insulin activity in their body became increased. ‎ C. The level of triglyceride in their blood was increased. ‎ D. The oxidative stress in their body was strengthened.‎ ‎35. What does Professor West show by citing the example of a half apple? A. The whole thing can be divided into two parts.‎ B. It implies oxidative stress is harmful to our health.‎ C. An apple is the only food that contains antioxidants.‎ D. We can keep diseases away if we have an apple a day.‎ 第二节:(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. He now stays in the USA. (3)‎ Text 4 ‎ M: How did you get this job?‎ W: Last year I took a visit to London. I went to lunch at the Palace Hotel and thought, “I’d really like to work here.” So I wrote to see if they had any positions, and I was lucky they did. (4)‎ Text 5‎ W: Mike, there’s not much left in the fridge. Well, I might be able to pick up a few things after work, but I have to be back rather late today.‎ M: In that case, we’ll have to have a meal out at McDonald’s. ‎ W: Well, I’m afraid so. (5)‎ Text 6‎ M: Hey, Karen, what are you reading? Physics?‎ W: Oh, no.‎ M: You haven’t turned the page in the last ten minutes. It doesn’t really hold your interest? (6)‎ W: No, not really. But I have to read it for a test. I should say, I don’t like Dickens at all and I’m starting to like the whole course less and less. (6) Although the course itself isn’t really that bad. It’s me, I suppose. I wanted to do chemistry rather than English, (7) but my parents took me out of ‎ it.‎ M: So you’d better choose a different one.‎ W: But my parents don’t think so. They only care if I can find a good job in the future.‎ Text 7‎ M: Hi. I’m calling about the apartment. Is that still available?‎ W: Yes, it is.‎ M: Now, that’s a two-bedroom apartment?‎ W: That’s right. There are two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, (8) and the living room can also be used as a dining room.‎ M: Uh-huh. How much is that?‎ W: It’s 425 dollars a month.‎ M: Mm-hmm. Where I live now is…it’s really noisy. Is this like a fairly quiet building? (9)‎ W: Oh, yes! Well, the neighbors are really considerate, and no pets are allowed.‎ M: Oh, that’s good. What floor is the apartment on?‎ W: Well, it’s on the second floor, but there is no lift.‎ M: It’s all right. I don’t mind the stairs.‎ W: Look, why don’t you just come down and see for yourself? (10)‎ Text 8 (第11题为推断题)‎ W: I have just had enough! Can’t you see I am busy? Every night is the same. (12)‎ M: Now, listen… I have had a long day at the office and I really want to see the match. Is that such a terrible thing? I want to watch the football match now and again.‎ W: Oh, that’s right. You hardly ever watch a match, do you? No, every night it is football with you… We never talk anymore, do we?‎ M: So what? I am tired. This is just my way of relaxing. I mean, tell me…what on earth have you done all day? (13)‎ W: Well, listen…you don’t like really to know, I have done the washing, the cooking, the ironing and I have just come back from the shops…you know that kind of thing…and right now I am making your dinner — in case you had not noticed… I know you always think it appears by magic!‎ M: Big deal! I don’t call that real work. (13) I am just fed up with this. God, you never have anything nice to say, do you?‎ Text 9‎ W: Come on in, Freddy. Have a seat.‎ M: Thank you for seeing me today, Ms. Watson. I guess a lot of other students need help with their résumés!‎ W: That’s what I’m here for. So, what do you have so far?‎ M: Well, I’ve listed all the jobs I’ve had, just like you told me to do over the phone. (14)‎ W: Let’s take a look… Wow, it looks like you’ve had quite a lot of part-time jobs. But a lot of these were from when you were in middle school. (15)‎ M: Yeah, I helped out my neighbors a lot. (15) You know, gardening, painting, walking their dogs…things like that.‎ W: Well, maybe you could just have one entry for all of them. Companies hiring college graduates care more about jobs from within the past five years. ‎ M: OK. And I think I’ve included everything about my education.‎ W: Well, have you received any awards or scholarships?‎ M: Um…I did get an award for a project I did during my first year. Should I mention that?‎ W: Absolutely. Now, what about your interests and hobbies? (16)‎ M: Oh, I didn’t know I should put those down.‎ W: You definitely want to write a couple of sentences about who you are outside of school and work. (16) Remember, you’re not some robot who is going to perform tasks over and over at work. You’re a human being whose personality will be part of the company.‎ M: All right.
