They work because it's unavoidable. They need to make enough money for   31    (necessary): food, rent, clothing, transportation, tuition, and so on.  They spend about one-third of their lives at work, but they hate   32   . They complain and count the minutes   33    quitting time each day — or the days until their next vacation.   However, there are other workers that either love to work or   34   (addict) to work. Sometimes it is not easy   35    (distinguish) between the work lover and the work addict or workaholic. The fact is   36   though the work lover may spend many extra hours on the job each week and often take work home, he or she does not regard work   37   the only source of self-esteem and satisfaction in life. Workaholics, on the other hand, become so emotionally dependent on their work that without it they are incapable of functioning. Real workaholics would rather work than do anything    38   . They probably don't know    39   to relax; that is, they might not enjoy movies, sports, or   40   types of entertainment. Most of all, they hate to sit and do nothing.   Ⅲ 阅读 (共两节,满分40分) 第一节 阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A You're in a department store and you see a couple of attractive young women looking at a sweater. You listen to their conversation: "I can't believe it—a Lorenzo Bertolla! They are almost impossible to find. Isn't it beautiful? And it's a lot cheaper than the one Sara bought in Rome." They leave and you go over to see this incredible sweater. It's nice and the price is right. You've never heard of Lorenzo Bertolla, but those girls looked really stylish. They must know. So, you buy it. You never realize that those young women are employees of an advertising agency. They are actually paid to go from store to store, talking loudly about Lorenzo Bertolla clothes. Every day we notice what people are wearing, driving and eating. If the person looks cool, the product seems cool, too. This is the secret of undercover marketing. Companies from Ford to Nike are starting to use it. Undercover marketing is important because it reaches people that don't pay attention to traditional advertising. This is particularly true of the MTV generation—consumers between the age of 18 and 34. It is a golden group. They have a lot of money to spend, but they don't trust ads. So advertising agencies hire young actors to "perform" in bars and other places where young adults go. Some people might call this practice deceptive, but marketing executive Jonathan Ressler calls it creative. "Look at traditional advertising. Its effectiveness is decreasing." However, one might ask what exactly is "real" about of young women pretending to be enthusiastic about a sweater? Advertising executives would say it's no less real than an ad. The difference is that you know an ad is trying to persuade you to buy something. You don' t know when a conversation you overhear is just a performance.  41. The two attractive young women were talking so that they could ________. A. get the sweater at a lower price           B. be heard by people around C. be admired by other shoppers            D. decide on buying the sweater 42. Lorenzo Bertolla is _________. A. a very popular male singer              B. an advertising agency C. a clothing company in Rome             D. the brand name of a sweater 43. The underlined word "real" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _________. A. honest          B. true               C. false              D. artificial 44. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?  A. The two girls are in fact employed by the Lorenzo Bertolla Company. B. The MTV generation tend to be more easily influenced by ads. C. Traditional advertising is becoming less effective because it's too direct. D. Undercover marketing will surely be banned soon by the government. 45. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Two Attractive Shoppers                B. Lorenzo Bertolla Sweaters C. Ways of Advertising                     D. Undercover Marketing   B What is the connection between violence and sports? Psychologists say that there are many reasons for violence at sports events. One is alcohol. Many fans drink a lot at games. When people drink, they are more likely to do abnormal things. Psychologist Dennis Brock says, "Quiet people become loud. Normally nonviolent people become destructive." David Sampson, a sports sociologist, agrees, "These are often celebratory riots—a large number of very happy people mixed in with large amounts of alcohol. They don't often seem dangerous in the beginning, but things get violent quickly." Another reason for violence at sports events is the crowd itself. When individuals are in a large group of people, they can lose their sense of personal responsibility. Edward Hirt, a social Psychologist, says that research shows that people do things in crowds that they would never do alone. People in crowds feel anonymous—no one knows who they are. Crowds also make people feel powerful. They stop making personal decisions. They just follow the crowd. Social psychologists call this a "mob mentality." Dave Zarifis, head of public safety at Northern Iowa University says, "Some people don't even come to celebrate. They want to drink hard and make trouble. Someone does something stupid, and it grows from there. You get a mob mentality. People think it's OK to do almost anything. There are so many of us and not enough of them." Social psychologist Dr. Sharon Kennedy says that there are a few things officials can do to prevent violence. Making sure that an area is not overcrowded is very important. Officials should also think of games as big parties. Then they will prepare differently. Kennedy says that in Great Britain they are controlling the problem with cameras in all the stadiums. "When you know someone is watching, you are much less likely to behave badly."  46. Which of the following best gives the main idea of the first two paragraphs? A. There's a connection between violence and sports. B. There are many reasons for violence at sports events. C. One cause of violence at sports events is alcohol. D. David Sampson and Dennis Brock have the same opinion. 47. Which of the following does NOT belong to a "mob mentality"? A. "No one knows I'm doing this."   B. "It's safe to do what many people are doing." C. "There are so many of us and not enough of them." D. "I must drink some alcohol to stop myself feeling shy." 48. How many experts are quoted by the writer of this passage? A. Five.         B. Four.         C. Three.         D. Two. 49. The last paragraph is mainly about          . A. how to make games into big parties B. how to prevent violence at sports events C. why to install cameras in stadiums D. how to avoid oneself behaving badly 50. What lesson can we learn from this passage? A. Never drink any alcohol no matter where you are. B. Whenever you are watching a game, you should keep quiet. C. Never follow blindly no matter how many people are doing something. D. Be careful when you are at a stadium because there are cameras there.   C Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degrees of intimacy(亲密) between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know people we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background. Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common—they often talk about "being on the same wavelength". It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to tolerate differences of opinion. In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that result from shared experiences and emotions do seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.  51. According to the author, ___________. A. those who get on well with each other are friends B. friends are closer than people who just get on well with each other C. everyone understands clearly how to make friends D. every student has 6 friends 52. When we make friends, we consider such things as age, race, and background, because __________. A. it is not easy to have a friendly relationship with people when there is a marked difference in age and background B. the degree of friendship between two people and the reason for their shared interest can vary greatly C. friends need to know all these things D. these are the most important factors to make friends 53. In Paragraph 2, the underlined phrase "being on the same wavelength" means          . A. using the same frequency while talking B. keeping the same friendly relationship as other people do C. having similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes and interests D. having the same background 54. Which of the following is NOT implied or directly stated in the passage? A. Even friends may have different opinions. B. Friends never argue with each other. C. It generally takes time for people to become close friends. D. Some of one's habits may annoy his friends. 55. To strengthen friendly relationship, people _________. A. must hold friendship ceremonies B. have to get rid of differences in background C. should make friends with those who are of the same age and of the same race D. should support and understand each other through shared experiences and emotions  第二节 信息匹配 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。请将答案填涂在答题卡标号为56~60的相应位置上。 首先,请浏览以下网站图片信息: A. It will help students in case of natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, snowstorms or floods. Many examples show that enough knowledge about self-protection along with enough courage and willpower can help many survive. The most recent example is from the earthquake in Sichuan Province in May of 2008. While thousands of school kids were killed by collapsed school buildings, all students from a middle school survived even without a single one being hurt. That’s because of their timely and orderly evacuations (撤离), which they had been drilled in every term. It’s good to see this program is the most important activity of a national campaign to make students be aware of personal safety. Chinese Education Ministry has called on all schools nationwide to give lessons on self-protection knowledge in times of emergency every term. 16. the 19th century / nineteenth century    17. lasting       18. fit 19. It is the duty of the whole society to understand and respect the disabled people around us. We should not make fun of them and never look down upon them. I believe that all of us are kind-hearted and are always ready to offer our helping hands. Let’s care about all the disabled people and make our country more beautiful and filled with love.  读写任务: Take care of ourselves! Chinese Education Ministry has paid close attention to self-protection education among school students because some knowledge about self-protection may help one survive in case of emergency. In my opinion, no lesson is more important than the one on personal safety. Life is fragile but can be strengthened when one is armed with enough knowledge on how to protect oneself from danger. As middle school students, we should learn some knowledge about safety. Firstly, we should always obey the traffic rules. When we go across the road, we must wait for the green light. When we go to school or go home by bike, we should go along the right side and should not ride at a high speed. Secondly, in order to avoid fire in our dormitory, we should not use any electric device without permission. Thirdly , we should not climb the fence of the school in case that we might hurt ourselves. It is high time that we should be aware of the importance of self-protection. And only with a good sense of self-protection can we live a safe and happy life!    听力部分录音原文  (Text 1) M: Hi, Mom! W: Hi, Billy. Did you have a good day at school? M: It was pretty good. My math test was a breeze. W: Great. Do you want something to eat? M: I’m not hungry. George and I are going to make a ramp on the hill    by the church. I’m going to use my new snowboard! W: Be careful. Last time you soared off a ramp and hurt your leg. M: I know. I’ll be careful. And I’ll wear my snow pants, too. W: Good, Billy. But remember you must be back home in an hour and a half. It’s almost five o’clock now. M: OK, Mom! Bye!  (Text 2) W: Have a seat, Mr. Wells. Let me take a quick look at your application. You’re a junior at the university. Also, you were a lifeguard and a dishwasher for the past two summers. M: Yes. But this year I have an apartment. So I need a job during the school year, too. W: I see. Do you think you can handle both a job and school? M: Yes, I think I can do it. W: Well, we need a clerk in the mailroom. The job pays 20 dollars per hour, and it’s on the night shift. The hours are 2 am to 6 am, Monday through Friday. What do you think ? Are you interested? M: Yes, everything is OK except the hours. I’m not used to staying up late. But if I take a nap in the afternoon, I may manage it. When do I start? W: On Monday. M: All right. Thank you!  (Text 3) Good evening, thank you all for coming here to learn about our recycling program at our school. Some people say they don’t recycle because the rooms are too confusing and text is too difficult. Well I am sure they are still unsure about the whole program. The recycling is planned as simply as a three-part program: searching, collecting and delivering. The first part searching is also the hardest one. Most people don't like to take the time to separate rubbish and this is usually why most recycling programs fail. However, we have reason to believe that our program will work. From now on, instead of seeing the usual black rubbish cans all over the school, you will see three different colored rubbish cans. Pink cans are for paper, blue cans are for bottles, and white ones are for all other waste. Just remember pink -- paper; blue -- bottles; white -- waste. After the rubbish is collected, it needs to be sorted though and then taken to the recycling center. Since this recycling program at present is still a volunteer program, we ask for no more than 5 hours per person in each week and your job will be to collect all sorts of rubbish and take it to different centers for each type of rubbish. If you would like to help, please leave me your name and telephone number and we'll meet here for more details on 15th September right after school. Hope to see you then!  (Text 4) M: May I help you? W: Yes, I’d like to take a one-day sightseeing tour around the town. M: We have several. Would you tell me where you want to go? W: I particularly want to visit the British Museum and the Tower of London. Do you have any tours that include both of them? M: Yes, this one does. You visit the Tower and Westminster Abbey in the morning. Right after lunch, the tour makes a stop at St. Pauls. The rest of the afternoon is spent at the museum. W: How long does the tour take? M: About seven hours. Where are you staying? W: At the Hyde Park Hotel. M: Let’s see. The bus stops there at 9:50.You should be back by 5:30 in the afternoon. W: What is the cost of the tour? M: It’s 15 pounds, including lunch.  (Text 5) W: Well, here we are. I'll just open the door. Ah, here we go. Come on in, Mr. Smith. Isn't it nice? M: Hmm. Where is the view? The advertisement says this place has a great view of the ocean. W: Oh, well, you… now look… if you stand right here and look between those two buildings over there... M: Where? Oh, I can hardly see it at all! W: Oh, come on, I mean, think of all the good points. M: Like what? W: The public transportation right at the front door. It’s really convenient. M: But I don't need public transportation. I have a car. W: Maybe you don't need the car. M: I like the car. W: There is a shopping centre just up the road. M: Yes, that’s a good point. W: And the swimming pool, and the gym downstairs. M: I don’t have time for sports. Look, can we take a look at the place? I don’t have all day. W: Sure. Here’s the main bedroom. Isn’t it lovely? M: But is it quiet? W: Oh, it’s very quiet. And here’s the second bedroom. M: Hmm. It's very small. W: Well, second bedrooms are never as big as the master suite. M: But this is too small. Well, we'll have to think about it.  (Text 6) Cameras are an important part in our modern life. However, the invention of the camera goes far into the past. It was not until the early 19th century that man found a way to make the pictures lasting. Even then, photography was a new field. Most families had their pictures taken by a photographer. People did not own cameras because taking pictures and developing the film were too difficult for them. In 1884, George Eastman changed photography by inventing a kind of film that fit into a small camera. Because the new film was easy to carry and use, many people began to buy cameras. When they had used up their films, people returned their cameras to the factory. There, the film was developed, and pictures were printed. Eastman’s camera made it easy to take pictures. Today’s cameras are even easier to use, and people can put in their own film. Actually, photography has become a growing hobby. There are also many new jobs in the field of photography. One of the most important kinds of work is in news reporting. Newspapers, magazines and televisions all need pictures to tell their stories. Photographers aid scientists by taking pictures through microscopes and telescopes. Deep-sea divers take pictures of ocean plants and animals, while astronauts take their cameras into space. Still, men are trying to find new uses for the camera every day.
