A How intelligent can a computer be? May be you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child and the Internet. If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can recite many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season. He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city areas across the US. However, if you ask Smarter Child other questions, you get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “One year, 11 days, 16 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds!” Asking where he lives, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.” Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for instance, Smarter Child goes to American Heritage Dictionary online. For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com. Some scientists believe that by joining the many systems of the Internet, an artificial being with the combined knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, if Smarter Child wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David in the movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence, he must solve two problems. The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it himself. Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he lacks(缺少) common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious(明显的) to any young child. 1.From the text we can infer that www.intellicast.com is a website ______. A.which is specially designed to help Smarter ChildB.which is about artificial intelligence C.where people can find Smarter Child D.where weather forecasts are made 2.It is probably most difficult for Smarter Child to ______. A.learn the ability to tell right behaviors from wrong ones. B.tell us how the American government is run C.provide us with a famous poem by Shakespeare D.tell us how to spell a difficult word 3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A.Smart Child has his own memory bank big enough for all kinds of information. B.A.I. Artificial Intelligence is probably the name of a film about a boy-computer. C.Smart Child can recognize different files and find information needed on his own. D.We have similar product now which has the knowledge of Einstein, Nixon and Spears. 根据第四段“For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com.” 根据最后一段“he lacks(缺少) common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious(明显的) to any young child.” 故选 A 项。 3.B 细节理解题,根据倒数第三段“if Smarter Child wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David in the movie A. I. Artificial Intelligence, he must solve two problems.” B For some years,my mother worked for a charity as President and Secretary. Selling raffle tickets(兑奖 券) was her main means of bringing in the charity’s muchneeded funds. We girls would accompany her, selling tickets with great success. My father made and donated beautiful wooden toys, jewellery boxes and other lovely items as prizes. Now my sister was always coming up with “good ideas”,most of which didn’t work out to plan. But that didn’t deter her. She had many just waiting to be tested. When she was eight and I was just five,we had a wonderful idea for a business adventure. We decided we would sell raffle tickets for charity, and that charity was us! So one afternoon,we told our mother we were going to play in the park with our cousins as we did most days after school. But instead,we walked around the streets armed with a raffle book,a pen and a large cloth bag to carry the money. We’d accompanied our mother many times when she sold tickets,so people were familiar with us when we appeared at their doors. Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer, they were very generous. Although there were no actual prizes, our mother’s previous track record enabled us to sell nearly the whole book of raffle tickets. Like a little pair of lottery(彩票) winners,we walked home and proudly showed off our takings. But our enjoyment of this sudden wealth was shortlived, and our plans for spending it quickly failed. Our angry mother took us back to every ticket buyer, making us apologise and give the money back. Thankfully, our sweet neighbours didn’t make a big deal of our “clever” misbehavior and thus my mother’s fundraising career could continue safely. We were taught a good lesson by our mother that day. Also I remember my sister’s entrepreneurial(企业家的) spirit dried up a bit after that. 4.What did the author’s father do? A.He got prizes ready. B.He sold handmade items. C.He was in charge of a charity. D.He helped design raffle tickets. 5.What does the underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Embarrass. B.Shock. C.Discourage. D.Mislead. 6.What can be learned about the author and her sister while selling raffle tickets? A.They ran into their mother. B.They met some generous strangers. C.They got lost while walking around the streets. D.They took advantage of people’s trust in their mother.7.What lesson did the author and her sister learn? A.Honesty is the best policy. B.What’s done can’t be undone. C.Misfortune never comes alone. D.Good advice is beyond all price. My father made and donated beautiful wooden toys, jewellery boxes and other lovely items as prizes.(我父亲制作并捐赠了漂亮的木制玩具、首饰盒和其他可 爱的物品作为奖品。) 故选 A 项。 Now my sister was always coming up with “good ideas”,most of which didn’t work out to plan.(现在我妹妹总是能想出“好 主意”,但大多数都没有按计划实现。) She had many just waiting to be tested.(她 有很多只是等待测试。) We’d accompanied our mother many times when she sold tickets,so people were familiar with us when we appeared at their doors. Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer, they were very generous. Although there were no actual prizes, our mother’s previous track record enabled us to sell nearly the whole book of raffle tickets.(妈妈卖票的时候,我们陪了她很多次,所以当我们出现在门口时,大家都很熟 悉我们。 D They took advantage of people’s trust in their mother.(他们 利用人们对他们母亲的信任。) Thankfully, our sweet neighbours didn’t make a big deal of our “clever” misbehavior and thus my mother’s fundraising career could continue safely. We were taught a good lesson by our mother that day.( 值得庆幸的是,我们可爱的邻居并没有把我们的“聪 明”行为当回事,因此我母亲的筹款事业可以安全地继续下去。 他们小聪明就是上文提及的“Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer, they were very generous. Although there were no actual prizes…(尽管在询问奖品时他们得到的只是茫然的表情,但他们非常慷慨。虽然没有真正的奖品……)。因此可知,作者和妹妹得到的教训是要有诚信。故选 A 项。 C A robot created by Washington State University (WSU) scientists could help elderly people with dementia (痴呆) and other limitations live independently in their own homes. The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors installed in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen. “RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,” said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Currently, an estimated 50 percent of adults over the age of 85 need assistance with every day activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050, researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the financial strain on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone. RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to incorporate into their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that demonstrates how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently. “While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising,” Minor said. “The next step in the research will be to test RAS’ performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what prompts, video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.” 8.How does RAS serve elderly people? A.Through sensors. B.Through objects. C.Through a mobile robot. D.Through their daily activities. 9.What can we know about RAS? A.It is the first robot used in daily life. B.Its function remains to be tested.C.It can locate people and do any task. D.It can cook for owners on its own. 10.What’s Minor’s attitude toward the future of RAS? A.Doubtful. B.Negative. C.Optimistic. D.Uncertain. 11.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Elderly people leave the nursing home. B.Smart Home Tests first elder-Care robot. C.RAS, the first robot to make home smart. D.Older adults have benefited from RAS. 【文章大意】这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了一款由美国华盛顿州立大学的科学家们研发的机器 人,可以帮助那些痴呆或有身体缺陷的老年人在家里过上自立的生活。 8.A 细节理解题。根据文章第二段 The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors (传感 器)equipped in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities 可知机器人活动支持系统(RAS)使用 WSU 智能 家居中配备的传感器(传感器)来确定其居民在哪里,他们在做什么以及何时需要日常活动 的帮助,说明传感器起到了重大的作用,故选 A 项。 9.B 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的 The next step in the research will be to test RAS' performance…可知,这台机器人的表现还要经过进一步的测,说明正在测试阶段,故选 B 项。 10.C 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段 While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising 可知,Minor 对这款机器人的未来发展充满信心、非常乐 观,故选 C 项。 11.B 主旨大意题。文章介绍了一款由美国华盛顿州立大学的科学家们研发的机器人。由最后一段 中 The next step in the research will be to test RAS’ performance 可知,机器人目前还在华盛顿 州立大学的智能屋里进行测试,故选 B 项。 D You’re enjoying a quiet evening at home when suddenly your neighbor's dog starts barking(吠叫) and doesn’t stop. Sure, dogs need to bark every now and then, but if the barking is getting in the way of your daily life, you need to do something. Before you take action, make records of when the dog is disturbing. Record the dates and times when the barking appears to find out the features of the barking. Check them carefully and get your facts straight. You might notice the barking only happens when the owners are at work, or during thunderstorms. After two to three weeks, visit your neighbors with the facts, your neighbors might not even realize the barking is a problem, for the worst noise may happen when they are gone. Explain the times when the barking gets bad, then suggest a way to solve the problem. Ask if the dog can stay inside during storm, or suggest a dog training class. Be open to compromise(妥协)because the owners might have other ideas about how to deal with the noise. Befriending the dog could help. Have your neighbors introduce you to their dog. If they become more comfortable in your presence, they're less likely to bark when they see you or when they are in the backyard. You might even be able to use commands such as “quiet” once the dog trusts you. Avoid gossiping(流言輩语)with other neighbors about the dog. “That’s when things escalate.” After all, most people will want to solve the problem. 12.What can you do first when your neighbor’s dogs barking influences your life? A.Bring the dog to a training class. B.Drive it out of your neighborhood. C.Record the dates and times of the barking. B.Become worse. C.Remain unchanged. D.Become more personal. 15.What can be inferred from the text? A.Love me, love my dog. B.Barking dogs seldom bite. C.Good communication is a must. D.Treat violence with violence. 【文章大意】这是一篇说明文。短文就被邻居家的狗的叫声打扰时,应该如何去做提出了一些建议。 12.C 细节理解题。由第二段 Record the dates and times when the barking appears to find out the features of the barking.可知,记录狗叫声出现的日期和时间,找出狗叫声的特征。所以当邻居的狗叫 声影响到了你的生活时,你首先能做的是记录狗叫的日期和时间。故选 C 项。 13.D 细节理解题。由第三段 your neighbors might not even realize the barking is a problem, for the worst noise may happen when they 're gone.可知,你的邻居甚至可能没有意识到狗叫声是个问题,因 为最糟糕的噪音可能发生在他们不在家的时候。所以为什么你的邻居不太可能意识到狗叫的 问题是因为当狗叫时,它们不在家。故选 D 项。 14.B 词义猜测题。根据最后一段 Avoid gossiping(流言輩语)with other neighbors about the dog.可 知,避免和其他邻居谈论狗。所以判断出和其他邻居谈论狗时会使问题恶化。故通过上下文 可以判断出,划线词的意思是“变得更糟”。故选 B 项。 15.C 推理判断题。根据第二段 Before you take action, make records of when the dog is disturbing.在你 采取行动之前,记录下狗打扰你的时间。第三段 After two to three weeks, visit your neighbors with the facts.两到三周后,去拜访你的邻居。第四段 Explain the times when the barking gets bad, then suggest a way to solve the problem.解释狗叫的时间,然后提出解决问题的方法。第五 段 Befriending the dog could help.和狗狗成为朋友可能会有所帮助。所以通过所提出的建议可 以判断出,良好的沟通是必须的。故选 C 项。 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项;选项中有两项为多余选项。 Five steps to better handwriting Some kids love handwriting, but others hate it when it’s time to put pen to paper. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 17.Hold it in place with your thumb(拇指), and your index and middle fingers. Let the lines be your guide Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are of the right size and proportion (比例). 18.Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one. Slow down If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters. Lower the pressure (压力) 19.That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try relaxing and don’t hold the pencil too hard. 20. Lots of games need you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pencil better. A.Play games B.Ask for advice C.You’ve been writing since you were a little kid. D.So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”. E. Some kids press down really hard when they write. F. During my childhood, I was constantly involved in something that included people’s viewing my achievements or my 22 . I wanted everyone’s praise and acceptance, but I was my own toughest critic (挑剔的人). After I graduated from high school, my 23 to be “thin” began to trouble me. I began trying to diet by 24 my food. In the beginning, I felt great—attractive and successful, almost superhuman. I even thought that I was better than everyone else. What I didn’t see was that I was slowly 25 myself. People around me began to 26 my weight loss. They said with concern. “You’re losing too much weight.” “Elisa, you’re so thin.” All their words only suggested that I was getting closer to “ 27 ”. Sadly, I took my physical 28 the first important in my life, 29 that it was the way to become successful and accepted. Then I cut down my 30 more and more, until a 31 day consisted of half a teaspoon of nonfat yoghurt and coffee in the morning, and a cup of grapes at night. But my poor 32 began to cause me to lose 33 . Then one night, like many nights before, I couldn’t sleep, and my heart felt as though it might beat out of my chest. I tried to 34 , but I couldn’t. The beating became so rapid and so strong that I could no longer 35 . What I had done to diet nearly caused me to have a heart attack. I stood up, and immediately fell down. I was really 36 , and I knew I needed help. My roommate rushed me to the 37 , beginning the long road to my 38 . It took a lot—doctors, nurses, nutritionists, food supplements...
