山东省潍坊市 2020 届高三一轮复习限时训练 Book VII Unit 3--5 Challenge I. Choose the best one(每空 2.5 分) Passage one 用时____________ 得分________ What is a fair wage? 36 These are some of the questions the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO) has recently investigated. With a global population of over seven billion, is it actually possible to measure an average amount? 37 Using the total wage bill from over seventy countries, they have multiplied the amounts by the number of earners in each country. The economists then tallied up the results and divided them by the total number across the world. The result was a world average wage equivalent to $1,490 a month. 38 This figure might seem very high because they calculated the amount using purchasing power parity dollars which takes into account the fact that it is cheaper to live in some countries than others. 39 Calculating an average sum like this might not be a completely fair representation but these figures do help us to understand how the world is developing both economically, in the quality of life people are experiencing and their standard of living. But the result shows that the average wage is still relatively low and there remains a huge difference in levels of wealth around the world. 40 Is this fair? For many pay equality still seems very far out of reach. A. The ILO has now tried to work out the sums. B. The ILO used statistics from over 70 different countries. C. Why aren’t more people in the world offered pay equality? D. That is approximately $75 a day for a 20-day working month. E. Some people live on just two dollars a day, while others are earning more than a million dollars a year. F. When someone works for themselves, what are they called? G. The data also did not include the huge number of people who appear in poverty statistics or who are self-employed. Are You a Prisoner of Perfection? Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach? 1 Are you setting yourself up for failure and shame when you can’t achieve the unachievable? Understanding what drives perfectionism is the first step toward releasing this self-created anchor that keeps us stuck. Shame and fear are often the hidden drivers of perfectionism. We believe that if we can fashion a perfectly polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us with criticism and we’ll win respect and approval. 2 Politicians who display a desperate need to be right and refuse to acknowledge mistakes or uncertainty are often driven by a secret shame. They fear that showing vulnerability (弱点) will expose them to the accusation that they’re weak. They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes. Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better. 3 However, if we can’t relax and enjoy lighter moments, then we become prisoners of our perfectionism. We get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too seriously. Sadly, we deprive (剥夺) ourselves of the simple pleasure of enjoying the moment and being ourselves. 4 We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never learn from our mistakes; we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. The important thing is to learn from our error, forgive ourselves and move on. Being human, perfection is impossible. 5 Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures—and enjoy our precious life. A. Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize? B. A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings. C. Do you fear that others will be horrified by what you judge about yourself? D. The addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect. E. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correcting along the way. F. People who are addicted to perfection are often isolated, even if they seem outgoing and popular. G. By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid the shame that drives perfectionism. People Are People Globalization has brought different cultures together in a way unimaginable one hundred years ago. Today, Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Africans, Anglos, and Hispanics may all work in the same offices, attend the same schools or live in the same neighborhoods. 36 And our society has lately emphasized the importance of diversity. 37 Take the following old proverbs for example. “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” Thomas Jefferson, American President. 学 案 装 订 线 学 案 装 订 线 学 案 装 订 线 学 案 装 订 线 学 案 装 订 线 学 案 装 订 线 学 案 装 订 线 “One falsehood spoils a thousand truths.” African proverb. “Be honest to those who are honest, and be also honest to those who are not honest.” Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher. “A sacrifice is written off by a lie and the merit of devotion by an act of cheat.” Hindu saying. 38 There seems to be a sort of cultural unity. We don’t wish to imply all cultures are the same. Cultural diversity is real, and people from different cultures view many situations in different ways. However, historically, different cultures seem to share many common values. They are justice, courage, patience, generosity, equality, mercy and kindness, respect for the elders, and many more. Lying and stealing appear to be wrong no matter where you go. Perhaps some cultures make room for extenuating(情有可原) circumstances more than others; perhaps cultures apply these virtues in different ways; and when values disagree, different cultures may place different levels of importance on them. 39 But both cultures may still value both. To us, it seems as if there is some sort of code of right and wrong that everyone everywhere seems to understand, regardless of culture. It is almost as if, behind all of the diversity, one finds a common understanding—a human culture, if you will—that goes beyond racial, social, and political boundaries. 40__ A. Each value supports many more quotes from different cultures. B. As cultures rub shoulders with each other, many differences stand out. C. These quotes from four separate cultures all support the same value—honesty. D. In other words, one culture may lean more toward justice and another culture more toward mercy. E. It is almost as if, despite all our differences, we are all still the same—we are just people. F. We want to show, however, that there is more to these cultures than diversity. G. All people seem to agree that we should tell the truth. Passage four 用时____________ 得分________ I just counted how many foreign languages I've studied so far in my life and it's been twelve! I always follow my interests and find ways to put my language learning into things I'm already interested in. I like to read blogs in other languages. 36 . For the most part, bloggers tend to write the same way they speak, so I don't have to worry much about adopting strange terms that are only used in writing. Movies are also a really good tool, especially if you can find subtitles in the language you're learning. 37 , they will still keep your brain listening and reading in the same language.Music is another way to start listening to things in your new language. Personally, I'm so bad at understanding lyrics even in English, so this one doesn't really work for me, but I have friends who learn a language through lyrics. Games are of course also an excellent way of studying a new language. A lot of language learning computer programs include games. I'm super competitive and if I play any of them, I can be hooked for hours. 38 . When the initial excitement of learning a new language begins to fade, it can be hard to stick with it. The hardest bit for me is when I'm comfortable enough with a language to understand most things and make myself understood. I'm actually stuck at this stage in Norwegian. 39 . Ideally I should sign up to take a big language exam. Each time I start getting self-satisfied, it's time to take a new course or sign up for online lessons, or take up some sort of challenge that will require me to level up my skills. 40 . The best language class I've ever taken was my beginner's Russian course at university where my professor never used any English. It got to the point where I would kind of just forget about English while in Russian class, which helped me to really immerse myself in the Russian language and do a whole lot with the limited Russian I had. A. That’s really uncomfortable B. Whatever languages they’re translated into C. I also try to think in the language I’m learning D. It’s time well spent if I’m learning the language E. Computer games always make me feel worn out F. Though they don’t always exactly match what’s being said G. I found them the perfect learning tool because they’re usually written in oral language Book VII Unit 3&5 【Reading Promotion】 Passage one CADGE Passage two ADEBG Passage three BFCDE Passage four GFDAC
