That hard, unpleasant sound may be making it harder to shake off the sleepy feeling in the morning known as grogginess. So, is there a better way to wake up? A recent study says yes. The answer is music. The study, carried out by researchers in Australia, involved 50 people. The researchers found that people who wake up to musical alarms reported feeling more awake and alert. Stuart McFarlane, a lead writer of the study stated, "We are very surprised by these findings as one might expect a harsh beeping sound to be more successful," at waking up a person. Sleep inertia is another term for grogginess. It means a person has a heavy feeling when waking up, and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping. McFarlane said people need to better understand sleep inertia's harmful effects on human performance later in the day. Not everyone will experience the full effect. But for those who do, "care should be taken" when performing duties that require a top performance within this period, he said. This includes "dangerous tasks like driving or riding our bikes" shortly after waking up. The same is true for people who work in dangerous situations shortly after they wake, including firefighters and pilots. So, what makes musical alarms better for waking up? The researchers think the music may be more successful in reducing sleep inertia because it has several tones, compared to the single tone of a "beeping" alarm. McFarlane said that the changes over time between the music tones may help increase a person's attention when waking from sleep. And is there a kind of music that is best to wake up to? There may be, McFarlane said. "We could suggest alarm sounds that are tune full and easy to hum or sing along with. The current sounds I have been using include 'Close to me' by the Cure and 'Borderline' by Madonna." No matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters — a lot. 24.Which of the following might be the best title for the text? A.What is grogginess? B.Why are musical alarms better? C.Which music is the best? D.How can we overcome grogginess? 25.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Sleep inertia is another cause for grogginess. B.How long a person sleeps is of great importance. C.The 'beeping' alarm is not effective mainly because of its noisy tone. D.It is dangerous for everyone to drive or ride bicycles shortly after waking up.26.The paragraph following this passage is likely to focus on . A.examples of good musical alarms B.more findings of the application of music C.explanations about why music is more helpful D.suggestions on how to sleep well and feel fresh each morning 27.In which section of a magazine may you find the passage? A recent study says yes. 由最后一段的“No matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters — a lot.”(专家说,无论你怎么醒来,你得到的睡眠量也很重要——很重要。) 由最后一段的“No matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters — a lot.”(专家说,无论你怎么醒来,你得到的睡眠量也很重要——很重要。) 故选 A 项。 C When I was 8 years old, I decided to run away from home after a quarrel with my mother. With my suitcase packed and some sandwiches in a bag, I started for the front door.My mom asked where I was going. “I’m leaving home,” I said. “What’s that you’re carrying?” she asked. “Some clothes and food,” I replied. “If you want to run away, that’s all right,” she said. “But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way.” I threw my suitcase and sandwiches on the floor and started for the door again. “Wait a minute,” Mom said. “You didn’t have any clothes on when you arrived, and I want them back.” This infuriated me. I tore my clothes off — shoes, socks, underwear and all — and shouted, “Can I go now?” “Yes,” my mom answered, “but once you close that door, don’t expect to come back.” I was so angry that I shut the door forcefully and stepped out of my home. Then I noticed down the street two neighbor girls walking toward our house. I was so shy that I saw the big spruce (云杉) tree in our yard and jumped under the low-hanging branches ( 树 枝 ). A pile of dried-up brown needles (针状物) were beneath the tree, and you can’t imagine the pain those sharp needles caused to my body. After I was sure the girls had passed by, I ran to the front door and knocked at it loudly. “It’s Billy! Let me in!” The voice behind the door answered, “Billy doesn’t live here anymore. He ran away from home.” Looking behind me to see if anyone else was coming down the street, I said, “Mom! I’m sorry. I’m still your son. Let me in!” The door opened and Mom’s smiling face appeared. “Did you change your mind about running away?” she asked. “What’s for supper?” I smiled back. 28.When the author was leaving home, his mother ordered him to _____. A.stay at home B.take some sandwiches C.leave everything behind D.check his suitcase carefully 29.The underlined word “infuriated” probably means “_____”.A.surprised B.warned C.encouraged D.angered 30.Why did the author jump under the low-hanging branches? A.changed his plan to leave home B.felt very hungry at that time C.wished to eat something before leaving D.wanted to know what his mother prepared for supper 【答案】28.C 29.D 30.A 31.A 【解析】这是一篇记叙文。 But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way. I tore my clothes off — shoes, socks, underwear and all — and shouted, “Can I go now?” I noticed down the street two neighbor girls walking toward our house. I was so shy that I saw the big spruce ( 云 杉 ) tree in our yard and jumped under the low-hanging branches (树枝). A. In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural (建筑上的)styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not influence its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area. It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change. Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice. 32.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph? A.Some of them are not attractive. B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve. C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings. D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area. 33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author? A.We should reproduce the same old buildings. B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings. C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in. D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.34.By "move things for ward" in the last paragraph, the author probably means "________". A.put things in a different place B.choose new architectural style C.rebuild old buildings in a new style D.respect people's feelings for historical buildings 35.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To explain why people dislike change. B.To warn that we could end up living in caves. C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings. D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas. Not all historical buildings are attractive.“并不是所有的历史建筑 都有吸引力。” 故 选 A。 33. It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.“如果我们总是复制 以前的东西,我们还会生活在洞穴里。 Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.“如果我们总是复制以前的东西,我 们还会生活在洞穴里。 Everyone would like to be at least a little bit smarter, if given the chance. Plenty of supplements, apps, and tools promise to increase your brainpower. 36 School and other kinds of training can give the wrong feelings that we’re getting smarter. But what can you do? Practice, practice, practice Even if you can’t get more IQ points, you can choose to more effectively use the ones you have. Sure, some people are doing better at their pursuits because they’re smarter than you, but for the most part they’re also likely just plain working harder. 37 Choose your battles It’s not necessary for you to put in tons of effort into every area of your life. 38 And even you are making a living at and practice tons at those. But, especially once your formal education is behind you, you probably won’t find yourself working hard at things you hate and also can’t use every day. That’s fine too. 39 Don’t forget that your brain is stuck in your body(at least for now), so it won’t run properly unless you’re taking care of yourself. You need to focus on including the right fats and excluding(把……排除在外)the wrong carbs. So you can make full use of brain performance over time. Don’t forget to get enough sleep too! 40 If you have anywhere close to a normal IQ, you still have the capacity to learn all kinds of new things to add to your store of knowledge. And larger stores of background knowledge help the world to make sense to you, even if you aren’t a genius to begin with. There’s just no substitute for actually knowing things that can’t be learned except from outside sources. A. Take care of your body B. Happily, if you work harder, you’ll see the results too. C. Improve your IQ through studying D. But evidence still suggests you can’t make yourself smarter. E. Learn new things F. It makes sense to choose the hardest things that you enjoy. G. Try your best to win your own battle. 39. 【解析】选 A。 I was born into a family of educators.
