At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.‎ ‎1. W: Did you call the manager?‎ M: Yes. I told him our doorbell doesn’t work. He said he’d come over tomorrow.‎ Q: Why did the man call the manager?‎ ‎2. W: I’m sorry, sir. We don’t seem to have a reservation for you.‎ M: But my wife said that she had reserved a room for me here. I phoned her this morning just before I boarded the plane.‎ Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?‎ ‎3. M: You look quite different from what you used to.‎ W: Sure. I started exercising regularly two years ago and went from 207 pounds to a healthy 140 pounds.‎ Q: What do we know about woman?‎ ‎4. W: Do you let people know when you are taking pictures of them?‎ M: I try not to. You know, I don’t want people in my picture to look unnatural.‎ Q: What are the speakers talking about?‎ ‎5. W: I can’t decide what to do about the party tomorrow.‎ M: You don’t have to go if you don’t want to, but I’ll be glad to give you a ride if you do.‎ Q: What do we learn from the conversation?‎ ‎6. W: I need to talk to someone who knows Tokyo well. I was told you once lived there.‎ M: Oh, yes. But I was really young at the time.‎ Q: What does the man imply?‎ ‎7. W: Hello, Fred. I got stuck in a traffic jam. I’m afraid I can’t make it before 9.‎ M: Never mind. I’ll be waiting for you in your office.‎ Q: What can we learn about the woman from the conversation?‎ ‎8. M: Did you check the power plug and press the play button?‎ 第 4 页 共 4 页 W: Yes. The power was on and it was running. But somehow the sound didn’t come through.‎ Q: What is the woman probably trying to do?‎ ‎9. M: Oh my god! The heat is simply unbearable here. I wish we’d gone to the beach instead.‎ W: Well, with these art museums, I’ll be happy here no matter what the temperature.‎ Q: What does the woman mean?‎ ‎10. W: I heard about your promotion. You must be so excited.‎ M: Not really. My new office is huge, but the work load has doubled.‎ Q: What do we learn about the man from the conversation?‎ Section B Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will be asked several questions on each of the passages and the longer conversation. The passages and the longer conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.‎ Questions 1l through13 are based on the following passage.‎ When Christina answered an advertisement on social media, her sister warned her that she could have problems. The ad was a weekend vacation to an unknown destination. ‎ The West Virginia Division of Tourism organized the free trip earlier this month. The goal was to advertise West Virginia as a perfect place to visit during the autumn months. The social media ad said next to nothing about the destination. It only suggested that people wear layered clothes and strong footwear. It also recommended they have a sense of adventure.‎ In parts of the United States, mystery trips have grown into their own industry. Whether traveling by bus, train or airplane, these vacations have different lengths, costs and destinations. Often, organizers give people a general idea about where they are going. But sometimes they do not. The group Christina went with enjoyed dinner, nature and horseback riding. They watched musical acts at a former general store and spent the night at Canaan Valley Resort.‎ ‎“I would absolutely do it again,” Christina said. “It got me out of my comfort zone. It’s part of the adventure.” (Now listen again please.)‎ Questions:‎ 第 4 页 共 4 页 ‎11. What was the ad on social media probably about?‎ ‎12. What did Christina think of her experience?‎ ‎13. What is the passage mainly about?‎ Questions14 through16 are based on the following passage.‎ Once upon a time, goods were scarce, and hard to get for all but the extremely wealthy. But industrial mass production has changed all of that. Factories all over the world are pumping out bright and beautiful objects. When everyone has to wait and save up for new things, owning them feels exciting and special. But when lovely things are available every day, they stop being a treat.‎ One of the features of consumer society is that we aim for social distinction through what we own. But if everyone has lots of stuff, how can we impress anyone with our purchases? All of this takes the fun out of shopping and means there’s a limit to how much consumerism can grow.‎ This is deeply worrying to companies, and some of them have started to fight it, by creating artificial scarcity. For example, in Singapore, a small cafe only opens on random days. It sometimes stays closed for over a week at a time. This trend means we can again own something rare. But the risk for these companies is that in a world of so much stuff, if they make their products too hard to get, we’ll just buy from someone else instead.‎ ‎(Now listen again please.)‎ Questions:‎ ‎14. What is one of the features of consumer society according to the passage?‎ ‎15. Why does the small cafe in Singapore stay closed sometimes?‎ ‎16. What is the passage mainly about?‎ Questions17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.‎ W: Can I help you? Are you looking for something in particular?‎ M: Yes, well... I’m looking for the English literature section.‎ W: Oh, it’s right down here. What are you looking for?‎ M: I’m looking for a novel we’re supposed to read: Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.‎ W: Jane Austen. Hmm. Oh, here it is. Here you are.‎ 第 4 页 共 4 页 M: Eighteen dollars? The price is right, but, erm, it’s just the text. There don’t seem to be any footnotes. Is this the only edition you have here?‎ W: Yes, it is. Sorry.‎ M: Would it be OK if I bought this now, and then returned it if I can find a better edition on the internet?‎ W: Yes, certainly. But you’ll need to keep your receipt, of course, and be sure that the book is not marked up or damaged in any way.‎ M: Sure, that’s fair enough.‎ W: Did you want me to check whether we can find you another edition?‎ M: I don’t think I have time. It usually takes so long to get a book through a bookstore.‎ W: Unfortunately, that’s often true.‎ M: Thanks anyway. I’ll take this then. And I’ll go back and see if I can find a better edition on the internet. Thanks a lot for your help.‎ W: Thank you. Have a nice day. ‎ ‎ (Now listen again please.)‎ Questions:‎ ‎17. Where are the two speakers?‎ ‎18. What must the man do if he wants to return the book?‎ ‎19. What can be learned from the conversation? ‎ ‎20. What will the man probably do later?‎ 第 4 页 共 4 页
