When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks (挫折) to win a highly competitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.
Liz Murray, a 22-year-old American girl, has been writing a real-life story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug-addicted parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.
Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. “What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,” she wrote in her book Breaking Night.
She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that “next to nothing could hold me down”. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.”
Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is “as simple as making a decision”.
24. The main idea of the passage is ________.
A. how Liz managed to enter Harvard University
B. how Liz struggled to change her life
C. why Liz loved her parents so much
D. the hard time Liz had in her childhood
25. In which order did the following things happen to Liz?

b. She worked at a petrol station.
c. She got admitted into Harvard.
d. The movie about her life was put on.
e. She had trouble finding a place to sleep.
A. b, e, a, d, c B. a, b, c, e, d C. e, d, b, a, c D. b, a, e, c, d
26. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Both Liz’s father and mother are AIDS-infected patients.
B. Liz lived a hard time in her childhood.
C. Liz’s story is an inspiration to many people.
D. Liz hated her father because he got addicted to drugs.
27. What actually made her go towards her goal?
A. Envy and encouragement. B. Willpower and determination.

C
Throughout history, music spread among people of different cultures. In today's technological advanced society, however, people spread music online, sometimes without an artist's permission. This can lead to many problems, and music companies are now cracking down on this practice. Sharing music online without permission is theft.
Sharing music online prevents recording companies from making money from their efforts. They say that sharing music online has resulted in a huge drop in profits and sales over the past 10 years. People who find music for free online are not paying for CDs or every MP3 downloaded. To truly understand the influence of music piracy on creators, one must understand how many people are involved in the recording process. For the sale of each album, profits must be shared between musicians, sound engineers, music producers, managers, advertisers, and the company selling the product. Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved.
There are many people who don't see the harm in sharing music online and even think they have the right to do it. One online blogger states that he originally paid for an entire CD and that he should be able to do with the material whatever he wants. While he may have
legally paid for the music, he does not have the right to provide permission, which means people like the blogger are thieves.
Although we don't spread today's music the same way we did before, there's no doubt that people around the world love to share music. However, internet piracy would prevent musicians from continuing producing albums for fear of theft. Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profit to continue their music careers.
28. The underlined phrase "cracking down on" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. bringing up carefully B. speaking highly of
C. dealing seriously with D. destroying completely
29. We can learn from the text that ________.
A. sharing music files online affects a lot of people
B. artists are taking action to protect their right
C. online music sharing increases sales of music CD
D. a person who bought a CD has the right to share it online with others
30. How is the text organized?
A. Topic—Argument—Explanation
B. Introduction—Supporting statements—Conclusion
C. Main idea—Comparison—Supporting statements
D. Opinion—Discussion—Description
31. What is the author’s attitude toward music piracy?
A. indifferent B. favorable C. disapproval D. skeptical
D
A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech integrated(综合的) systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components(零部件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies(相互依赖性) on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a
set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically, it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”
32. Which of the following statements was the difficulty engineers met while making the robotic fly?
A. They did not have sufficient fund.
B. There was no model in their mind.
C. No ready-made components were available.
D. It was hard for them to put together the components.
33. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. The robotic fly has been put into wide application.
B. The robotic fly consists of a flight device and a control system.
C. Information from many sources can be collected by the robotic fly.
D. The robotic fly can just fly in limited areas at present.
34. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A. Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.
B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.
C. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.
D. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.
35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. The Development of Robotic Fly
B. Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect
C. Harvard’s Efforts in Making Robotic Fly
D. Robotic Fly Promotes Engineering Science

M: Are you going on holiday with your sister again this year?
W: Yes, she comes home from Canada tomorrow, and then we're going away next week.

W: All right.
(Text 6)
W: What a cold day! The weatherman says there will be a snowstorm today. You' d better wear warm clothes, dear.
M: I don' t believe the weatherman anymore. Last week he said there would be clear skies but it rained all week.
W: All right. Go ahead and catch cold. In winter, that always means that it is going to snow.
M: It doesn't make any difference. Fred is driving me to work.
W: Just the same, you have to go out for lunch.
M: By that time, this storm will have stopped. Look! It's partly sunny already.

M: What about Friday then?
W: That would be great. Yes, I'd love to. What time does it start?
M: At 7:00 pm. Would you like to go for a drink first?
W: Yes, fine. Is six o'clock OK? We can meet outside the cinema.
M: OK. See you on Friday then. Bye.
(Text 8)
W: The walls in your room were dull and lifeless, so I covered them with these prints.
M: Oh, I like this one. Where did you buy it?
W: At the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Art History Department recently organized a special museum tour there.
M: Is this a copy of something in the museum collection?
W: Yes, it's a print of a painting by Georgia O'Keefe called “Lake George Window”.
M: It looks more like a photograph. Is the Art History Department planning another museum tour?
W: Yes, the next one is a special exhibit of European painters at the Museum of Find Out In Boston. I think I will sign up for that one. Maybe I will even come back with prints to cover the bare walls of my room.

M: Hello!
W: Hello! Glad to meet you.
M: Tell me something about yourself, please.
W: My name is Wan Mei and I live in Guangzhou. I was born in 1987. I am a student of Jinan University. I have majored in Public Administration, I like travelling very much and enjoy sports. I am in the tennis club at my university.
M: Your application form says you were out of school for half a year during high school. What was the reason? Were you ill?
W: Oh. no. My father's job took him to America for six months then, and he decided to take the whole family along.
M: So during that time you went to high school in the United States?
W: Yes, it was just for a few months. I attended Johnson High School in Chicago.
M: Tell me why you are interested in working for this company, will you?
W: I think working in this company would give me the best opportunity to use what I' ve learned at college, studying public administration for four years. I think this company has a great future. So for a long time I've been thinking I'd like to work for this company.
M: Have you ever worked during your university days?
W: Yes. I worked as a teacher to teach English to a middle school student.
M: There's a good chance for you to come to work for this company. Thank you for coming. Goodbye!
W: Goodbye!

The United States Department of Education says there are more than 2,400 American colleges and universities. About one hundred of these four-year schools began as public agricultural colleges, and continue to teach agriculture. They are called land grant colleges or universities. Federal land grants supported the building of most of the major state universities in the United States. The idea of the land grant college was developed more than 100 years ago by Congressman Justin Smith Morrill of Vermont. In 1862, he wrote bills to create such a college in each state. Almost 200 international students are studying this year in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. All but five are graduate students. University officials say most international students in the College of Agricultural Sciences are from Africa, Asia and Europe. They are studying animal science, plant science, economics, and food science.
