Are you still searching for an amusement park to enjoy yourself? Then, Disney World is your
best choice! Disney World has four theme parks. A single-day admission ticket to these four theme
parks is $78 for adults and half for young children above three years old. The very best time to come

An elm tree was planted in the first half of the 20th century on a farm in Michigan, US.
In the 1950s, the family that owned the farm kept a bull chained to it. The bull walked around the tree, pulling a heavy iron chain, which made a groove (沟)in the tree about a meter off the ground.
The groove deepened over the years, though for whatever reason, it didn't kill the tree.
After some years, the family sold the farm and took their bull with them. They cut the chain, leaving
most ofit hanging down from the tree. Eventually, bark (树皮)slowly covered the old chain.
Then one year later, disaster struck Michigan in the form of Dutch elm disease. It left a path of death
across vast areas. All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm were infected and died.
Everyone figured that the old elm tree would be next. There was no way the tree could last, with its
age and the chain hanging off its trunk.
The present owners considered pulling the chain out and chopping the tree up into firewood before it
died. But they simply couldn't bring themselves to do it. It was as if the old tree had become a family
friend, so they decided to let nature take its course. Amazingly, the tree didn’t die. Year after year, it
grew stronger. Nobody could understand why it was the only elm still standing in the whole area.
Experts from Michigan University came to observe the tree later, examining the scar left by the iron
chain. The experts decided that it was actually the chain that saved the elm’s life. They reasoned that
the tree must have absorbed so much iron from the chain that it became immune to Dutch elm
disease.
It’s said that what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. So if you’re ever in Michigan, look for
that beautiful elm tree. Look for the wound made by the chain - it serves as a reminder that even
with wounds, we can still have hope. Our wounds can give us the resources we need to cope and
survive. They can truly make us strong.
24. What is the right order of the events related to the elm tree?
a. The new owners left the elm tree as it was.
b. A farmer planted an elm tree on the farm.
c. A ball was chained to the elm tree by the owner.
e.The elm tree survived and grew stronger gradually.
d. The tree was left behind with most of the chain hanging down.

25. What can we learn about the elm tree from the article?
A. A heavy iron chain gradually became part of it.
B. The scar in the tree was completely healed finally.
C. The tree was almost killed by the bull and its chain.
D. The tree grew stronger because of the owners' care.
26. How did the elm tree survive Dutch elm disease?
A. Its thicker bark protected it from the disease.
B. Infected trees near it were all chopped down.
C. It was saved by experts from Michigan University.
D. It got enough iron that sheltered it from the disease.
27. What message does the writer intend to convey?
A. We should make use of what we have to overcome difficulties.

Lying alongside mountains of smelly garbage under the South American sun, Cateura is a long way
from the music schools of Prague or Vienna. Yet the township, which grew out of Paraguay's largest
dump (垃圾场),is gaining a reputation as a hothouse for musical talent—and for its youth orchestra that plays instruments made from garbage. "The world sends us garbage. We send back music," says
Favio Chavez, leader of the "Recycled Orchestra". Orchestra members, poor children from Cateura,
play violins fashioned from oven trays and guitars made from dessert dishes. The orchestra provides
the youngsters an outlet and an escape, a chance to go beyond the mess of their slum through the
music of Mozart, and even Sinatra. "In the beginning, it was difficult to play," says the l0-year-old
violinist Celeste Fleitas. "But Favio helped me learn over time. From Favio, 1 have learned to be

drinking water and little access to electricity or sanitation(卫生设施).Illiteracy is severe, and the
children of the township often fall into drugs, violence and crimes.
Favio Chavez, a musical talent, came to Cateura as an environmental technician in 2006 and
started a youth music school. He knew shop-bought instruments were beyond the means of villagers
whose sheds are worth less than a violin, so he approached a carpenter to make some out of waste
from the dump.
The orchestra caught the eye of Paraguayan filmmaker Alejandra Amarilla. She uploaded a short
piece of the orchestra to YouTube in 2012, hoping to secure crowdfunding for what would become
Landfill Harmonic, a documentary released across the United States this month and promoting the
youngstersonatour oftheworld's musichallslateron.
28. What do we know about Cateura?
A. It has raised people's awareness of recycling trash.
B. It has caught more attention through the orchestra.

D. It provides its children with better schooling conditions.
29. What can we learn from Favio Chavez?
A. To work in a team weighs more.
B. To recycle things is to conserve things.
C. To be creative is a quality of a leader.
D. To own nothing is no excuse to do nothing.
30. Why did Alejandra Amarilla upload a piece of the orchestra to YouTube?

Teacher burnout and student stress may be linked, according to a study of University of British
Columbia. The study is the first of its kind to examine the connection between teacher burnout and
students’ cortisol levels(皮质醇水平), which are a biological indicator of stress.
Researchers collected saliva(唾液)samples from over 400 elementary school children and tested
their cortisol levels. They found that in classrooms in which teachers experienced more burnout,
orfeelings of emotional exhaustion, students' cortisol levels went up. Higher cortisol levels in elementaryschool children have linked to learning difficulties as well as mental health problems.
"This suggests that stress spreading might be taking place in the classroom among students andtheir
teachers," said Eva Oberle, the study’ s lead author. "It is unknown what came first--raisedcortisol or
teacher burnout. We consider the connection between student and teacher stress a cyclical problem
in the classroom."Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of inadequate support
for teachers, which may influence teachers' ability to effectively manage their students.
Apoorlymanagedclassroom canleadtostudents' needsnotbeingmetand increasingstress. This could be
reflected in raised cortisol levels in students.
Alternatively, stress could start from students, who may be more challenging to teach because of
increases in anxiety, behavioral problems, or special needs. In this case, teachers could feel
overwhelmed and report higher levels of burnout.
"Our study is a reminder of the systemic issues facing teachers and educators as class sizes increase
and supports for teachers are cut,"said Oberle. "It is clear from a number of recent research studies
that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and that teachers need adequate resources and
support in their jobs in order to battle burnout and get rid of stress in the classroom," said UBC
education professor Kimberly Schonert-Reichl. "If we do not support teachers, we risk the additional
damage of students."
32. Students are generally believed to feel stressed because of.
A. academic difficulties and mental health problems.
B. lack of support for teachers and growing class sizes.
C. heavy study burden and pressure from other students.
D. poor classroom management and overstrict teachers.
33. According to the research, what's the relationship between teacher burnout and student
stress?
A. They both lie in the stressful social environment.
B. Student stress results from teachers' emotional exhaustion.
C. They are closely related and may contribute to each other.
D. Teachers suffer burnout because of more challenging students.
34. What does the underlined word"overhelmed"in paragraph 4 mean?
A. amazed B. defeated. C. encouraged. D. inspired.
35. Professor Kimberly Schonert-Reichl seemed to believe that.
A. students should be taught to show respect for their teachers.
B. teachers are generally to blame for not meeting students' needs.
C. students should learn to control their behaviors to please their teachers.
D. teachers should be provided with more resources and support in their profession.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
     根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
With the Christmas Day, the New Year, as well as the Spring Festival plus the Valentine's Day
on the way, the gift-giving season has been in full swing. When receiving a gift contrary to your
expectation, some will feel annoyed and it may lead to quarrelling. 36
Don't expect a specific gift
First of all, before you've even opened the present, you need to get yourself in the right mind
tendency. If you've got a specific gift in mind (say, a new pair of running shoes — please Santa!),
you're only setting yourself up for disappointment. 37 Have an open mind about it
Once you've opened the present and seen whatever it may be, give yourself a moment. Don’t
react until you've had a proper look at the thing. 38 . Instead you should take it seriously and
consider why it is. With that in mind, try to figure out whether you could, in fact, learn to love it.
    39 .
Right after you say "thank you!" and before you say anything else, you need to find something
positive to comment about the gift. It could be something as small as the fact that you like the color
of ii. It could be that you think it's practical. If you begin with the word of praise, the whole thing
will be much easier.
Skillfully ask about the gift receipt
If you've decided that you're likely not going to use the thing at all, ask about the gift receipt
skillfully. Now you should give a seemingly convincing reason for wanting it. For example, if it's a
clothing item, you could say that it's in case it doesn't quite fit. 40 . Let the gift-giver feel at
ease.
No matter what you receive, always remember to see things in others' shoes.
A. Don't be casual about it.
B. Find something to speak highly of.
C. Your friendship may come to an end.
D. Get your gift ready before leaving home.
E. Therefore, how to handle it appropriately is vital.
F. If it's a glass item, say you just want to have it in case it breaks.
G. Unless you've told the gift-giver your favorites, you have to accept it.
