This came after years of witnessing the worsening of her cognitive abilities(认知能力)and changes in her personality, all thanks to life-sucking front temporal dementia(FTD) (生命吸额颞叶痴呆).‎ ‎ My mom is going to lose her ability to speak, have trouble forming complete thoughts and sentences, and eventually forget how to do things she loved, like cook and read.‎ ‎ But despite all of her inabilities, when I walked in on her having dinner with the rest of the women that make up the dementia floor of the nursing home, I didn’t think she belonged.‎ ‎ It wasn’t until I spent three days there bonding with those women that I realized what scared me the most — she did fit in.‎ ‎ If you were an outsider looking at these women, you’d pity them. You’d think it was cruel that our bodies could turn on us in this way. You’d think it was sad that their families have put the burden of taking care of them on someone else. You’d want to intervene.‎ ‎ You’d want to give the lady eating mashed potatoes with her hands a spoon, you’d want to peel the orange for the lady who’s eating it like an apple, you’d want to scold the lady who forgets to flush(冲刷) the toilet and wash her hands after using the bathroom.‎ ‎ I did all those things to my mother. She lived with those women at the nursing home.‎ ‎25. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “intervene”?‎ A. Interrupt. B. Amaze. C. Permit. D. Explore.‎ ‎26. What was the final decision of the author?‎ A. She let her mother alone.‎ B. She let her mother stay at the nursing home.‎ C. She sent her mother to hospital.‎ D. She took care of her mother at home.‎ ‎27.What’s the author’s attitude towards her mother?‎ A. Mean. B. Selfish. C. Honest. D. Grateful.‎ C ‎ An old lady was walking with her basket down the middle of a street in Petrograd to the great confusion of the traffic and with no small danger to herself. It was pointed out to her that the pavement was the place for pedestrians, but she replied: “I’m going to walk where I like. We’ve got liberty now.” It did not occur to the dear old lady that if liberty entitled(授权)the pedestrian to walk down the middle of the road, then the end of such liberty would be universal chaos. Everybody would be getting in everybody else’s way and nobody would get anywhere. Individual liberty would have become social chaos.‎ There is a danger of the world getting liberty-drunk in these days like the old lady, and it is just as well to remind ourselves of what the rule of the road means. It means that in order that the liberties of all may be preserved, the liberties of everybody must be limited. When the policeman steps into the middle of the road and puts out his hand, he is the symbol not of tyranny(暴政), but of liberty.‎ Liberty is not a personal affair only, but a social contract (契约). In matters which do not touch anybody else’s liberty, of course, I may be as free as I like. If I go down the street dressed strangely, who shall say me no? We have a whole kingdom in which we rule alone and can do what we choose. ‎ But directly we step out of that kingdom, our personal liberty of action becomes qualified by other people’s liberty.‎ We all tend to forget this. A reasonable consideration for the rights or feelings of others is the base of social conduct.‎ ‎28. What does the first paragraph serve as?‎ A. A background. B. An introduction. ‎ C. A comment. D. An explanation.‎ ‎29. Which is an example of getting liberty-drunk?‎ A. Park anywhere you like. ‎ B. Walk along the pavement.‎ C. Wear whatever you like. ‎ D. Make loud noises in the wild.‎ ‎30. What might the author have stated his “rule of the road” (Paragraph 2) as?‎ A. Follow the orders of policemen. ‎ B. Do what you like in private.‎ C. Never walk in the middle of the road. ‎ D. Do not behave inconsiderately in public.‎ ‎31. What does the underlined word “qualified” (Paragraph 3) mean?‎ A. Limited. B. Ruined. C. Improved. D. Educated.‎ D Salt. You might be happy to have it in your pasta water and your oceans, but in your friendly neighborhood freshwater lake, it’s unwelcome. Unfortunately, salt is coming into lakes more and more frequently as humans pour increasing amounts of salt on the roads in winter.‎ Recently, researchers looked at 371 lakes across the northern USA and southern Canada and the areas surrounding the lakes to see how many roads were nearby. They found if even 1% of the land surface 500 meters from the lakeshore was paved, the lake was extremely likely to contain more salt.‎ Salt lowers water’s ability to freeze into a slippery, icy layer on the roads in winter. But when the weather warms, it gets washed off the road surfaces, which ends up accumulating in the soil, and ‎ eventually getting washed out by rain and snowmelt into surface waters.‎ Too much chloride(氯化物) can be bad for the environment. It can kill off plants, and make waters unsuitable for native plants. While on the road, it can attract salt-loving animals like deer, increasing the possibility of both road kill and traffic accidents. Chloride can also make water more corrosive(具有腐蚀性的).‎ But there is still hope.‎ ‎“We can always improve water quality,” Dugan, the lead scientist, says. “If you improve the water going into a lake you have the potential to freshen the lake.” Chloride can gradually be washed out of a lake as new water enters the lake.‎ Troubled by the rising price of salt, governments have already started to adopt more conservative salt-use measures, only using the amount necessary to ensure public safety. But homeowners can help cut back too by reducing salt used on private driveways. Dugan also recommends only salting at certain temperatures. Below ‎15°F, dry salt on a surface is useless, and won’t prevent ice from forming.‎ ‎32. What is the main idea of the passage?‎ A. Many people have a salty diet. ‎ B. Humans pour much salt in lakes.‎ C. Salt prevents ice from forming. ‎ D. Salt used on roads pollutes lakes.‎ ‎33. Why does the author mention the research in paragraph 2?‎ A. To encourage the citizens to join it. ‎ B. To stress how serious the problem is.‎ C. To popularize the knowledge of the lakes. ‎ D. To show how great the road construction is.‎ ‎34. Why can salt on the road cause traffic accidents?‎ A. The road becomes more slippery. ‎ B. Too much salt is corrosive to vehicles.‎ C. It attracts more salt-loving animals. ‎ D. Drivers are driving carelessly.‎ ‎35. What is suggested doing in the text to freshen the lake?‎ A. Purifying the lake water. ‎ B. Improving salt quality.‎ C. Lowering salt price. ‎ D. Using salt properly.‎ 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Our Fears can change the Reality of the Situation At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us.
