They are the aggressive street-working, fund-raising charity workers, otherwise known as “chuggers”.‎ The term “chugger” is a combination of two words, “charity” and “mugger”. Chuggers often work in the street. They set up a stall with information about the charity they represent, and they try to get you to donate money to the charity. Typically, they prey on your feelings of guilt, greeting you with questions such as, “Do you care about the planet?” or, “When was the last time you did something for someone else?”‎ But a survey of their strategies has found that some charity volunteers are far from charitable. “Many chuggers simply refuse to back off when asked to do so,’’ said Brian Jones, a spokesperson for a charity watchdog. “One of the problems is that some chuggers say they are working as volunteers,” he added. “However, they aren’t really. Most of the 50 chuggers we spoke to showed little interest in anything other than raising the maximum amount of cash in the minimum amount of time. They get paid from this so it makes sense. Also, a fifth of fundraisers had no visible ID and almost a quarter failed to give clear information about the cause they were representing. By employing chuggers who break the law, tell lies or refuse to leave members of the public alone, charities undermine the trust we all instinctively have in them.”‎ But Shirley Bosworth, chief executive of the Institution of Fundraising, said face-to-face fundraising remains “an appropriate and effective method”. “It enables charities to engage with a particular demographic of donor, and it means that charity and donor can enter into a dialogue about what the charity does and how the donor’s money will be used,” she explained.‎ ‎24 What do chuggers do according to the passage?‎ A. They rob money of strangers.‎ B,They cheat you into buying things. ‎ C. They ask you to donate money for charities.‎ D. They hurt your feelings by asking questions.‎ ‎25. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?‎ A. The survey of charity volunteers.‎ B. The problems with charity volunteers.‎ C. The basic information about charity volunteers.‎ D. The attitude Brian Jones takes toward charity volunteers.‎ ‎26. What does the underlined word “undermine” may probably mean?‎ A. betray B. strengthen C. build D. weaken ‎27. How does Shirley Bosworth feel about what chuggers do?‎ A, It’s useful. B. It’s disgusting. C. It’s absurd. D. It’s popular.‎ C Feeding 5,000 people every month is a huge task. For Lauren Puryear-a single mother, full-time mental health therapist, and founder of the nonprofit For the Love of Others-the secret is coupons (优惠券). Lots and lots of coupons.‎ ‎29-year-old Puryear is proud of preparing and serving hearty dishes to the poor and homeless. The menu depends entirely on that week’s bargains. “The best way to save money is to match the coupon when the item is on sale,’’ she explains. Her clipping talents save between $ 250 and $ 1,000 per grocery trip.‎ Most of the preparation work starts at home, in Woodbridge‎, ‎Virginia. Neighbors drop off 500 or so newspapers every week at Puryear’s house, and she spends her Friday nights going through them with her six-year-old son, Isaiah.‎ Puryear inherited her passion for cooking from her grandmother Marion Smith. When Smith saw beggars on the streets of Paterson‎, ‎New Jersey, she would offer to buy them food instead of giving them money.‎ Puiyear got into the act when she was ten. If there were leftovers from dinner, Smith would put them in a container and give her granddaughter instructions: “Now run outside and bring this to the homeless man on the street.”‎ When Puryear founded her nonprofit, she chose the name For the Love of Others to honor her grandmother, who passed away in 2012. “Love was just the central core of her being,” Puryear says.‎ Smith would certainly be proud of her granddaughter’s efforts-and her impact. At one meal in Baltimore, three boys asked if they could take extra sandwiches. “We’ll eat this today, but we’ll be hungry tomorrow,” one said. Puryear let them take five each. The boys’ crying mother thanked Puryear, explaining how she uses her entire paycheck for the hotel room where they live. They never know what they will eat day to day.‎ ‎“Stories like that that’s why we do what we do,” Puryear says. “To know that something as simple as couponing, which takes a couple of hours out of my day, can help somebody eat for three or four days-that’s amazing to me.”‎ ‎28. How did Puryear manage to feed so many people?‎ A. By using coupons. B. By receiving donations.‎ C. By buying food of lower quality. D. By borrowing money from her ‎ family.‎ ‎29. Where does Puryear get the information about coupons?‎ A. From her neighbours. B. From the newspapers.‎ C. From the stores. D. From her grandmother.‎ ‎30. Why did Puryear name her nonprofit For the Love of Others?‎ A. To show her love for others. B. To catch people’s attention.‎ C. To encourage people to donate. D. To remember her grandmother.‎ ‎31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A. Coupons for charity.‎ B. Puryear and her grandmother.‎ C. A kind woman-Lauren Puryear.‎ D. A nonprofit organization-For the Love of Others.‎ D Major airplane manufacturers are now moving to develop the future of flight with electric planes and personal flying vehicles.‎ Boeing is one of those companies. It recently invested in Zunum Aero, a company working to build electric aircraft for commercial flights. Zunum is based in the northwestern U.S.‎ state of Washington. It says it is hoping to revolutionize air travel by cutting flight times and greatly reducing costs.‎ By the early 2020s, the company plans to operate electric aircraft to carry 10-15 passengers on trips up to 1,100 kilometers. It says the cost of such flights could be as low as $ 25 each way.‎ Zunum noted on its website that, while America has more than 13,500 airports, 97 percent of all air traffic goes through just 140 larger hubs. By traveling through smaller airports, passengers can greatly reduce door-to-door travel time and avoid long security lines.‎ JetBlue was another major company to invest in Zunum. The head of JetBlue’s investment group, Bonnie Simi, said Zunum fits the airline’s desire to “seek new technologies to change the game.” She praised the company for developing “quiet, environmentally-friendly aircraft” for sustainable travel.‎ Zunum’s planes will be powered by two large engines at the back. The aircraft will be “hybrid-electric,” meaning they rely mostly on battery power, but also bum fuel when needed.‎ The goal is to eventually fly fully electric planes, although most experts believe this could take many years. This is because battery technology still has a long way to go to provide long-lasting power, but not be too heavy for the aircraft.‎ Other companies have released plans to release flying cars a lot sooner than that. Slovakia-based engineering company AeroMobil is preparing to show the world its latest model this week.‎ AeroMobii is showing the car at the Top Marques auto show in Monaco. No launch date or prices have been announced, but the company says it will be taking pre-orders this year.‎ ‎32. Electric aircraft may have the following advantages EXCEPT .‎ A. lower costs B. Shorter flight time C. fewer passengers D. shorter security lines ‎33. What is Bonnie Simi’s attitude toward Zunum’s electric aircraft?‎ A. Doubtful B. Positive C. Uncaring D. Disapproving ‎34. Why will Zunum’s electric planes still need fuel?‎ A. Because fuel is easier to get. B. Because battery may not be stable.‎ C. Because planes won’t start without fuel. D. Because battery may not last long enough.‎ ‎35. From the last two paragraphs, we can infer that .‎ A. Flying cars must be ordered in advance B. Flying cars will appear on the market this year C. The prices of flying cars are still unknown D. Flying cars are more popular than electric planes 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ In today’s times, health problems like diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure are not restricted to adults, but have become a common phenomenon among children too. 36 ‎ Due to this lack of activity and no control on the food they eat, many children suffer from the problem of obesity at a very young age. 37 Hence, it becomes the responsibility of the ‎ parents to teach children important ways to remain healthy.‎ At a very young age, teach the kids to eat all types of food, like fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. 38 Cultivate the habit of eating breakfast as it is said to be the most important meal of the day.
