How to correctly pronounce the consonants: /p/ /b/ /t/ /d/ /k/ /ɡ/ /h/ /m/ /n/ /?//l/ /r/ /j/ /w/
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Presentation
1.Learn to pronounce the sounds
T: Do you know how to pronounce the sounds correctly? Please imitate and read. /p/ /b/ /t/ /d/ /k/ /ɡ/ /h/ /m/ /n/ /l/ /r/ /j/ /w/ /?/
T: Pay attention to /j/. Let’s read it again. Which word includes the sound /j/? great! Year, yellow, yes. So the letter “y” makes the sound /j/.
T: Pay attention to /l/. Let’s watch and imitate.
T: I still have one more for you. Look at this one, /?/. In the word “thank”, there is the /?/ sound. Please imitate and read.
T: Which letter makes the sound /?/? Yes, “n”. So the letter “n” has two sounds. Most of the time we say /n/, but sometimes we say /?/. Let’s say the sentence and feel the two sounds. “We can sing the English song.”
T: Now let’s read the 14 consonants together.
2.Difference between voiceless consonants and voiced consonants
T: Good job. These consonants can be divided into two kinds. Please read the first group of
words here. Let’s read like this. People, people, /p/ (people, cap, tea, sit, key, cake, horse,
T: Put your fingers on your throats and feel. /p/ /t/ /k/ /h/
T: Let’s read the second group of words. (buy, club, day, under, glass, egg, man, room)
T: Put your fingers on your throats and feel. /b/ /d/ /ɡ/ /m/
T: Can you find out the difference? Tell me in Chinese. 第一组音标发音时，声带不振动；第二组音标发音时，声带振动。
T: Great! For the first group of consonants, we call them voiceless consonants. For the second group, we call them voiced consonants. Here are four pairs of the voiceless and voiced consonants.
T: Can you put the rest six consonants into the right place? (/n/ /?/ /l/ /r/ /j/ /w/) You are so clever! They are all voiced consonants.
Step 2 Practice
1. Let’s read the words
T: Let’s read the words in the table on P39. And get more familiar with the voiceless and voiced consonants.
2. Let’s dictate the words
T: Now it’s time for you to do some dictation. I will read some words and you should write
them down on your paper. (big, pig, call, tall, aunt, and, light, night, nice, rice, them, then)
3. Let’s write the words
T: Look at the screen. Say the sounds and try to write down what words make the sounds.
/klɑ?s/ /ɡlɑ?s/ /θ?n/ /s??/ /br??/ /b??ɡ?n/ /kli?n/ ɡri?n/
T: Open your books to P39. All the words we wrote down are in Part A. Please check your answers.
4. Let’s make up new words
T: Here are five groups of leaves. Can you put a letter in each box to get different words?
Step 3 Consolidation
1.Let’s read and make sentences
T: We have some words and phrases here. Would you please read them and pay attention to the sounds of the blue letters
T: Now I need you to put these words and phrases into five sentences.
2.Let’s read some new words
T: You did a good job. This time, you will see the phonetic symbols of some new words. Can you read out correctly?
T: Let’s check one by one.
