Note Taking
Note taking as an accommodation is available only to students who have
documented disabilities and are registered with Queen's Student Accessibility
Services (QSAS).Note taking is approved for students with disabilityrelated
functional limitations that make it difficult for them to access academic information
presented in class.
There is a wide range of reasons why students may require note taking as an
accommodation,including students with:
·hearing loss, who may have difficulty hearing the instructor while writing
notes at the same time
·vision loss, who may have difficulty seeing information presented on overhead
screens
·mental health conditions or attentionrelated disabilities, who may have
difficulty attending to orallypresented information while taking notes
·learning disabilities, who may have difficulty recording notes when information
is presented orally
·physical disabilities, who may have painrelated difficulties
Accessibility advisers consider a student's description of their need for note
taking along with information contained in their disability documentation and the
type of course in approving note taking as a formal accommodation.
Online Note Taking Portal
QSAS is in charge of the exchange of notes taken by student volunteer note
takers and students registered with QSAS via our secure online note taking portal.
The pages in this section provide information for students with disabilities,
volunteer note takers and instructors on requesting note taking, signing up to be
a volunteer note taker and assisting QSAS in recruiting volunteer note takers.

Pay it forward” is a new saying which means
donating money or performing good deeds without hoping for recognition. As far
as the receiver of the money, gift,or good deed is concerned,he or she is told
only to do something good for someone else.
When Scott,a homeless man, spent his last $15,he wasn't looking at it as
an investment, but it's about to pay him huge profits. After he helped a woman
who ran out of gas,she returned the favor by raising a lot more on the Internet.
Emily McClure,26,was driving home when she ran out of gas halfway.“He
saw me pull over and knew something was wrong,” she wrote.“He told me to
get back in the car and lock the doors.A few minutes later,he came back with
a red gas can, using his last 15 dollars to make sure I could get home safely.”
She couldn't repay him at that time because she had no cash with her.“I
have been stopping by his spot for the past few weeks.I repaid him for the gas
and gave him some clothes.”
Emily decided to do more for him,so she started a crowdfunding(众筹)
campaign on GoFundMe,and it quickly gained far beyond its initial $10,000
goal. When it reached $100,000,the fundraising page was shut down for a time
at Scott's request. He didn't want people to think he was taking advantage of the
situation. Finally,Emily said that she restarted it because the public interest had
not decreased. She also added that Scott planned to donate the rest to a good cause.
According to The Washington Times,Scott wants to get a job at a warehouse
and a department manager from a company has already reached out to Scott.

In many walks of life and in many situations,
persuading people to do what you want them to do is the key to success.Researchers
have looked into different aspects of persuasion and come up with some interesting
results which are surely helpful to us.
One advertising copywriter came up with an approach to selling a product on
a TV shopping channel via phone sales.Instead of being instructed “Operators are
waiting, please call now”,viewers were told “If operators are busy, please call
again”.The results were extraordinary. The ad suggested operators weren't sitting
around hoping people would call.Instead there were so many people wanting the
product that people might have to wait until they could get it.
What role does choice have in persuading people to buy or get something?
One study in a supermarket showed the effect of choice.A particular supermarket
displayed either 6 or 24 different kinds of jam.The large display attracted more
interest than the small one.But when the time came to purchase things, people
who saw the large display were one tenth as likely to buy.If they do buy,
they are less content with their selection, even though they have made a good
choice.A wider range of choices require more time and effort and lead to
unreasonably high expectations.
Another aspect of persuasion concerns getting someone to change their
minds. It's hard to prove to someone that a previous decision is wrong, and as
people get older they get less and less willing to change their minds.People want
things to be unwavering; they want their attitudes, statements, values and actions
to follow a set pattern. The only way to persuade them to change is to acknowledge
this by agreeing that the previous decision they made is a perfectly understandable
one. This allows them to focus on your suggestion without feeling their previous
decision is wrong. As a result, they may be persuaded to break out of their established
pattern.

8.What does the advertising copywriter want to indicate about the product?
A.It's in demand. B.It's rare.
C.It's for sale. D.It's precious.
根据第二段的“The ad suggested operators weren't sitting
around hoping people would call.Instead there were so many people wanting the
product that people might have to wait until they could get it.”
手,故选 A。in demand “需求大”。]
9.What does the study mentioned in Paragraph 3 show?
A.More selections bring more actions.
B.Increased choice decreases satisfaction.
C.More and more people don't want to choose.
D.Some choices are more attractive than others.
根据第三段的“If they do buy, they are less content with
their selection, even though they have made a good choice.A wider range of choices
require more time and effort and lead to unreasonably high expectations”可知,
10.What does the underlined word“unwavering” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Reliable. B.Demanding.
C.Unique. D.Consistent.
reliable“可靠的”;demanding “要求高的”;unique“独特的”。]
11.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To compare different forms of persuasion.
B.To discuss various studies on persuasion.
7/8
C.To teach how to get better at persuasion.
D.To analyze how persuasion affects success.
An acquaintance has something in common with
you and merely enjoys your company for a short time.A fairweather friend
flatters(讨好) you when the sun is shining and the birds are singing. 1 They
would never do the following things.
Walk away when times get tough.True friendship is all about how a person
helps another person when they are down and can give very little in return. Thus,
take note of who remains in your life when times get tough.Seriously, when you
get into a difficult period in your life, look around you. 2
Hold hatred(憎恨) over your head. Some people will refuse to accept that you
are no longer who you used to be - that you made mistakes in the past, learned
from them, and moved beyond them. 3 Instead, they help you repair your
present and future.
Pretend like they have all the answers. You may think about the people who
have had the greatest positive effect on your life - the ones who truly made a
difference. 4 True friends are the ones who sit silently with you when you need
a moment to think. They'd always lend you a shoulder when you need to cry.
5 You deserve to be with friends who make you smile - friends who
don't take you for granted. When you notice that a friend is always taking advantage
of you instead of offering help when you need, you might need to distance yourself
from them for a while.A true friend should want to give, but they shouldn't be
forced to always give more than they get.
A.Let you down.
B.Take from you without giving back.
8/8
C.The people still standing beside you are your true friends.
D.True friends never hold the unchangeable past against you.
E.True friends love and appreciate each other just the way they are.
F.A true friend,on the other hand, has your very best interests at heart.
G.However, you'll soon realize that they aren't the ones that tried to solve
all your problems.
