A simple project to help a family in need stopped Luke Mickelson in his tracks.
In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one
bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the
floor.Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community,
Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace,a nonprofit that builds and delivers
beds to children in need.
Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41,had a thriving career. He
coached his kids' sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met
children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.
Using safety guidelines and his daughter's bunk bed as a model, Mickelson
started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited
friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest
and involvement from his and other communities flooded-along with Mickelson's
bunk bed output. “That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage,”
he said. “The next year, we did 15.Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we
built 612 bunk beds.”
With the motto “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”,the nonprofit and
its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds
to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced
with a tough choice:advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter
and went from making “great money to zero money”. He's never looked back.
“I found that the need I have isn't financial,”he said. “The need I have is
seeing the joy on kids' faces, knowing that I can make a difference.”

(2020·江西省重点高中盟校联考)In the remote mountains of South Korea,
about as far away as one can get from the country's hightech cities, teenage Internet
addicts are turning up for a 12day boot camp.
Kyle Won's addiction is out of control. He spends 10 hours a day on the
Internet. Now Kyle's smartphone is taken away.“I'm really worried because I
won't have my phone for 12 days but I trust other things will fill my time,”
he said. The teachers here do what they can to get them socializing again;for
many, the only friends they have had are online. “I have relationships on the
Internet and a real distance has grown with my reallife friends and I know it's
not good,” Kyle said. The teachers show them other possibilities and bring back
dreams and hopes that have been buried by their addictions. “We teach them
methods of selfmanaging their desire to use the Internet so they can continue to
use them when they go back home,” Shim Yongchool,a teacher here, said.
After just two days Kyle said it was helping. He's set a good example to others
though he hasn't reached the goal completely.
South Korean psychiatrists (精神病学家) are urging more actions as they are
finding evidence that too much screen time is a barrier to the developing
minds.Professor Kang Seak Young from Dankook University said the addiction was
damaging critical thinking.“It affects the frontal lobes (额叶) which are important
for critical analysis,” Professor Kang said. “Reading a book while guessing what
happens in the story next shows activity in frontal lobes but playing popular computer
games for a long time shows no activity.”
South Korea is one of the most wired nations on Earth, but it does have a
cost. One in every 10 kids is an addict, so the country is now learning how to
manage its hightech future to avoid more serious consequences.

利亦有弊。故 A 项 There are two sides to every coin“凡事都有两面性”正确。
No pain,no gain“不劳无获”;It's good to learn at another man's cost“前
车之覆,后车之鉴”;Prevention is better than cure“预防胜于治疗”。]
Ⅱ.阅读七选五
(2020·浙江省金华十校模拟)There are many kinds of book clubs where
members discuss a different book every month. What about dinner clubs, where
people get together once a month or four times a year to make and eat dinner?
In the dinner club that I joined, the hostess of the dinner club would prepare a
big dinner first. 1 This was the beginning of our dinner club.
There are two variations of dinner clubs. One has a group of people who try
a different restaurant once a month. 2 When they all meet, they order and share
different dishes. This is a great idea, especially if you live in a big city where
there are hundreds of different restaurants.
3 One way is to have the hostess for the month decide on a type of food.
The hostess is responsible for cooking the entrees. The other members make different
courses at home, like salad and dessert, and bring them to the dinner club. For
an even more exciting and interactive type of dinner clubs, the entire group comes
together in the hostess' kitchen. 4 In this way the members of the group learn
about not only different types of food, but also different methods of cooking.
The great thing about a dinner club is that it serves in many different ways.
8/9
You can make the dinner club even more special one month by inviting partners.
5 A stayathome mother can get a couple of other stayathome mothers together
and start a children's lunch club. If you have a group of friends that love to get
together and experiment with different types of food, the possibilities are endless!
A.They prepare the entire meal in a group effort.
B.Usually one member decides on the restaurant.
C.Then the members would begin discussing the food.
D.They are likeminded people with similar education level.
E.The second kind of dinner clubs has many different forms.
F.It offers regular wellorganized social events in selected places.
G.Couples can get together for some food and great conversations.
