shootingfly—running,
pressing, pushing

A strong verb is a better and more descriptive version of
a “basic” verb that creates a stronger visual image and can
help create a mood for the scene.
A verb is used to describe an action, state or occurrence.
A weak verb is not specific and describes the bare
minimum of the action, leading to a lack of colour and
energy.
Weak verbs Strong verbs
eat devour, gulp, feast
see glance, admire, spy
make create, forge, foster, brew
say whisper, purr, mutter, mumble
• Weak verbs are the “basic” forms of a specific
action, like eat.
• Strong verbs are a specified form of a broader
action, like devour, gulp and feast.
Specific
They paint a specific picture of what’s going on,
creating a stronger visual image in the readers’ mind.
• She walked into the room, her cape trailing after her.
• She charged into the room, her cape billowing (鼓起) after her.
• She strutted (昂首阔步走) into the room, her cape flowing

They help you show, not tell, and make your writing
more concise.
