Chatbot III When Jeremiah A. Chatbot III was just a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, his parents motivated him to do great things in life. “I’ve always been a mama’s boy,” he told the Campus Times in 2017. “She always told me that I would be abandoned unless I became a doctor or lawyer, and that motivated me.” Chatbot excelled in high school, was accepted to every college he applied to, and eventually enrolled at UR. He tried both pre-med and pre-law, but earned poor grades in both. Chatbot decided to transfer, getting into the University of Pennsylvania mostly due to his high school grades. Here, he did much better academically, switching his major to Marketing and Business (against his mother’s wishes). Equally important for his academic success at UPenn was that he perfected the art of cheating during exams. His social life also excelled, causing him to create a network of people who later found success. Chatbot applied to several graduate programs as a senior, but was only accepted to a Ph.D. program at the Simon School of Business in Marketing. After completion of the program, Chatbot was hired by UR to do marketing work. He found success by working the phrase “ever better” nine times into a single 30-second advertisement for Strong Memorial Hospital. In 2015, Chatbot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Despite the award, Chatbot never received tenure or respect from his mother, who said in an interview she wishes he were a “real doctor.” In 2018, just months after his interview with the CT , Chatbot passed away from system overload. The symptom monitoring app now used by the University was originally going to be named for Frederick Douglass or Susan B. Anthony, but as Chatbot’s possessions left an endowment to the University, the app was named in his honor. 4. Which subject did he perform well in college? A. Medicine B. Law C. Marketing D. Physiology 5. Why didn’t Chatbot receive respect from his mother? A. He excelled cheating skills in the exams. B. He failed several courses in college. C. He was against his mother’s wishes. D. He was not awarded any prize. 6. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text? A. To introduce Dr. Chatbot. B. To make the symptom monitoring app known. C. To prove the importance of parents in motivating children to succeed. D. To stress the necessity of transferring majors in university. 7. What can we infer from the text? A. Chatbot was very successful in doing marketing work in UR. B. The symptom monitoring app was named in Chatbot’s honor. C. The system monitoring app was initially named after Chatbot. D. Chatbot was poor in social life and had not many friends. C 5. C 6. A 7. 根据第二段“Chatbot applied to several graduate programs as a senior, but was only accepted to a Ph.D. program at the Simon School of Business in Marketing.(Chatbot 大四时申请了几个研究生项目,但只被 西蒙商学院的一个市场营销博士项目录取。)” 根据第三段“Despite the award, Chatbot never received tenure or respect from his mother, who said in an interview she wishes he were a “real doctor.(尽管获得了这一奖项,但 Chatbot 从未得到过在他母亲心中 的地位或尊重。 故选 A 项。 【7 题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“After completion of the program, Chatbot was hired by UR to do marketing work. He found success by working the phrase “ever better” nine times into a single 30-second advertisement for Strong Memorial Hospital.(程序完成后,Chatbot 被 UR 雇佣去做营销工作。他为 Strong Memorial 医院做了一个 30 秒的广告,并在广告中重复使用了 9 次“比以前更好”,最终获得了成功。)”可知,Chatbot 在 UR 做营销 工作非常成功。故选 A 项。 C Most would agree that the pandemic has few upsides, with the exception of one notable group: dogs. After all, their people are home all day. There’s more petting, playing, walking and treats than ever. What a howl! It’s these up-close-and-personal-with-your-dog months that may have led to an increasing trend. Pet owners are dressing like their dogs, or conversely, dogs are starting to dress like their people. "If you told me five years ago I’d be dressing up like my dog, I’d have thought you were crazy," says Laura Burkart, 40, who with her partner, Donal Sheridan, 44, regularly dresses up in matching outfits with Hendrik, her dog. "I haven’t been spending any money on my own clothes this year. I’m not buying anything and I don’t have kids, so I’m spending my disposable income on things you would normally buy for a kid. He’s an extension of me and it’s a way to show we’re a family," says Burkart, who believes that Hendrik loves to get dressed up. "Everybody is obsessing over their dogs these days," says Cassie Cole, 51, the owner of dog clothing and accessory brand Fab Dog. In April, when people were flipping out because of COVID, they were ordering loads of toys and clothes for their dogs, because it made them happy." Amusement may be at the heart of the trend when there hasn’t been that much to amuse, says Gina Davis, 32, who owns a human/dog clothing company where business has "snowballed" during the pandemic. Burkart, too, says that during dark times, a little dog and family matching can bring on happy moments. "People laugh as soon as they notice us. I don’t know if they’re laughing with us or at us, but either way, they get a kick out of it." It may all sound like a lot of fun, but pay attention: “If an owner wants to dress their dog that’s generally fine,” says Rachael Rudman, kennel manager of the North Shore Animal League America. But, it’s important, “to read your dog’s body language … If it looks like they’re stressing out, don’t do it.” For smaller dogs, an extra layer may be a necessity, says Rudman. Rudman adds: “Make sure the garment is not too tight or loose; watch for the danger if a garment is too long.” 8. Why do Burkart and Sheridan regularly dress up in matching outfits with their dog? A. They have no child. B. They want to spend more money on it. C. Their dog likes getting dressed up. D. They want to show they are a family. 9. What made dressing like dogs a growing tendency? A. People want to spend money in dressing up their dogs. B. The human/dog clothing companies are increasing. C. There are more petting and treats during pandemic. D. Dogs are starting to dress like their owners. 10. What does the underlined phrase in Para 4 refer to? A. Be embarrassed. B. Be happy. C. Be surprised. D. Be depressed. 11. What does the author focus on in the last two paragraphs? A. Dressing up is a lot of fun. B. Don’t dress your dogs to be stressed. C. Put cloths for smaller dogs. D. How to choose suitable garments for dogs. 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. B 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍由于疫情的原因人们有更多的时间和他们的狗狗待在一起,并 且他们花更多的时间和精力去为狗狗花钱和装扮它们。 【8 题详解】 细节理解题。根据文中第二段“I’m not buying anything and I don’t have kids, so I’m spending my disposable income on things you would normally buy for a kid. He’s an extension of me and it’s a way to show we’re a family," says Burkart, who believes that Hendrik loves to get dressed up.(我什么东西都不买,我 也没有孩子,所以我把我可支配收入花在你通常会给孩子买的东西上。他是我的延伸,这是一种展示我们 是一家人的方式。Burkart 认为 Hendrik 喜欢精心打扮。)”可知,Burkart 和 Sheridan 没有孩子,和狗穿亲 子装是为了显示他们是一家人。故选 D 项。 【9 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“There’s more petting, playing, walking and treats than ever.(比以往任何时候有更多 的爱抚,玩耍,散步和糖果。)”和第三段“Everybody is obsessing over their dogs these days…In April, when people were flipping out because of COVID, they were ordering loads of toys and clothes for their dogs, because it made them happy.(现在每个人都很在乎他们的狗狗。……4 月份,当人们因为冠状病毒而抓狂时,他们为 狗狗订购了大量的玩具和衣服,因为这让它们很开心。)”可知,疫情原因导致人们和狗狗共处时间变长, 并可以买更多的玩具和亲子服装装扮它们。故选 C 项。 【10 题详解】 词句猜测题。第四段的关键词是本段第一个词 amusement。本段讲和狗狗穿亲子装给自己和他人带来了快乐。 划线短语所在句“I don’t know if they’re laughing with us or at us, but either way, they get a kick out of it.(我不 知道他们是在和我们一起笑还是在嘲笑我们,但不管怎样,他们都从中得到了乐趣。)”中 but 表示转折, 表明前面所说的不管别人是出于何种目的的笑,总归是让他们笑了,快乐了。所以划线短语“get a kick out of it”意思为“高兴,快乐”。B 选项 be happy 符合题意。故选 B 项。 【11 题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第五段中“But, it’s important, “to read your dog’s body language … If it looks like they’re stressing out, don’t do it.”( 但是,重要的是,“要读懂狗狗的肢体语言……如果它们看起来很紧张,不要这 样做。”)”和最后一段“Make sure the garment is not too tight or loose; watch for the danger if a garment is too long.(衣服不要太紧也不要太松;如果衣服太长,要注意可能会有危险。)”可知,装扮狗狗也要看狗狗的 心情,而且要注意安全,不要给狗狗造成压力。所以 B 选项“Don’t dress your dogs to be stressed.(不要因为 装扮让你的狗狗感到有压力。)”概括了最后两段的内容。故选 B 项。 D Most natural experiments in school disruption come after isolated natural disasters. The covid-19 pandemic is leading to a simultaneous global experiment, however. In America, where schools have been significantly disrupted for the better part of a year, the first batches of reliable data are being gathered to assess how bad the damage has actually been. Sorting through them shows that sadly, America has not defied the gloomy predictions. A recent analysis of standardised tests carried out by McKinsey, a consulting firm, found that pupils examined in the autumn had learned 33% less maths and 13% less reading than expected. For schools that are majority non-white, the learning losses were much steeper: pupils there had learned 41% less maths and 23% less reading. In Washington, DC, 73% of white children in kindergarten and 45% of black children typically show adequate reading progress. When examined this year, white children showed a modest drop in adequate literacy to 67%, while black children experienced a much larger one—to 31%. The gaps are also showing up in coursework, not just exams. Teachers in Los Angeles are reporting a stark increase in the number of failing grades—with the greatest increase in poor neighbourhoods. Researchers from Brown and Harvard universities examining data from Zearn, an online maths-teaching platform, found that pupils from high-income families are actually performing 12% better in their coursework than in January 2020. But for students from low-income families, scores fell by 17%. The results suggest that the fears of worsening achievement gaps at the start of the pandemic were justified. There are enormous racial gaps in the kinds of instruction being received: 70% of black and Hispanic children are receiving fully remote education, compared with 50% of white pupils. Parents with the means to do so appear to be pulling their children out of public education altogether. 12. How did people estimate the damage? A. By doing experiments. B. By analyzing the gathered data. C. By sorting through the students. D. By making predictions. 13. What conclusion can we get from the survey results? A. White students learned 33% less reading than predicted. B. Non-white students learned better than white students. C. The reading ability of black children dropped more obviously. D. The falling range was only revealed in examinations. 14. What was the main factor that influenced the achievement of students according to Para4? A. Race difference B. Family income C. Learning ability D. Quality of assignment 15. What’s the best title of this passage? A. Shutting schools has hit poor American children’s learning B. American parents intend to pull their children out of public education. C. The pandemic led to a global education experiment. D. Americans are pessimistic about the gloomy results. 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章主要讲了这次疫情对学生成绩的影响,同时导致了一场全球的教育实验。 【详解】1. 推理判断题。根据第一段“In America, where schools have been significantly disrupted for the better part of a year, the first batches of reliable data are being gathered to assess how bad the damage has actually been.”(在美国,学校在一年中大部分时间里都受到了严重的破坏,目前正在收集第一批可靠的数据,以 评估实际的破坏程度 )可知,人们是通过分析收集来的数据估计损失的。故选 B。 2. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“ When examined this year, white children showed a modest drop in adequate literacy to 67%, while black children experienced a much larger one—to 31%. ”(在今年的调查中,白人儿童识 字率小幅下降到 67%,而黑人儿童识字率则大幅下降到 31% )由此可知,黑人儿童的阅读能力下降更为明 显。故选 C。 3. 推理判断题。根据第四段“Researchers from Brown and Harvard universities examining data from Zearn, an online maths-teaching platform, found that pupils from high-income families are actually performing 12% better in their coursework than in January 2020.”(布朗大学和哈佛大学的研究人员对在线数学教学平台 Zearn 的数据 进行了分析,发现来自高收入家庭的学生的功课成绩实际上比 2020 年 1 月提高了 12% )可知,家庭收入是 影响学业的主要因素。故选 B。 4. 主旨大意题。根据第一段“The covid-19 pandemic is leading to a simultaneous global experiment, however. In America, where schools have been significantly disrupted for the better part of a year, the first batches of reliable data are being gathered to assess how bad the damage has actually been. ”(然而,covid-19 大流行正在导致全 球同步试验。 在美国,学校在一年中大部分时间里都受到了严重的破坏,目前正在收集第一批可靠的数据, 以评估实际的破坏程度)结合全文内容,可知这篇文章主要讲了关闭学校对所有孩子都不是一件好事,但 对贫穷和弱势的学生来说尤为如此。 美国关闭学校,贫困地区儿童受到更大影响。“关闭学校打击了美国 贫困儿童的学习 ”最适合作文章标题。故选 A。 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 How to Build a Natural Swimming Pool Whether you like to practice your dolphin dives or lounge away the day on a raft, swimming is one of summer's perfect pleasures. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. He was reading a comic book and he was still reading, saying nothing. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning. “You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read. At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called. “There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot. When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt !” 注意:续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Para 1: He turned to mom for help, however, Mom was still reading and said nothing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Para2: Having put away the toy train, he caught sight of the dirty socks. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Para 1 He turned mom for help, however, Mom was still reading and said nothing. Seeing his mother’s response, he burst into anger. “why are you so cold!” he shouted. But mom just closed the book, staring at him, stating calmly, “all of your pain results from your bad habits.” Furious but weak in words, Arthur turned back sharply and stepped upstairs with lame legs. Arthur came to realize it was he that could solve the problem by himself. Tears of regret filling the eyes, he quietly picked up the toy train and put it in the box. Para2: Having put away the toy train, he caught sight of the dirty socks. It suddenly struck him that it was also his duty to do the washing himself. Having collected the socks, he sank them in water, then gazing at them without knowing what to do. Just as he was scratching his head, mom came over and told him how to wash them softly. His face lighting up, Arthur sprang up into his mom’s warm hug. Stroking Arthur’s hair, Mom smiled with satisfaction for his getting rid of the bad habit. 词汇激活 行为类 ①求助:turned mom for help/turn to mom/ask mom for help ②.盯着:stare at him/gaze at him ③.看见:caught sight of / clap eyes on 情绪类 ①.生气:burst into anger /get mad/be angry ②.开心:his face lighting up / brighten up 【点睛】 [高分句型 1].
