Teaching aims
1. Knowledge aims: Students can grasp some new words and phrases,
such as fork,plate, knife and start with, eat up and so on.
2. Ability aims: Students are able to learn some reading skills, like
scanning, skimming and retelling.
3. Emotion aims: Students are encouraged to respect other culture and
do as the Romans do.

Step 1: Lead in:
Students watch a video together and ask them two questions:
What did the two men do?
Is it polite or impolite?
(This funny short video will increase students’ interests in learning
western table manners. And students can also use their knowledge to
describe their behavior.)
Step 2: Pre-reading:
Before the class, we will learn some new words.( show the
hand-made materials. Suppose this is table, this is a ....)
Make a lot of noise
Burp/slurp .....
Teaching procedures
Encourage students to spell them and then practice it by performing
rap.
Purpose: Students can review the words again in order to get a better
understanding of the passage.
Step 3:While-reading:
1. Scanning: let’s come back to our passage and turn to page 67.
Please read quickly and mark T or F( Finish 1a, check the answers by
group competitions)
Group competition will encourage students to be active.
2.Skimming: Read again and read sentence by sentence, work with
your partner( one asks the questions and the other answers, change the
roles)
Prepare the sheets so that students can work in pairs easily.
2. Read in details:
Work in groups and find the key words in the passage and circle them.
Then try to make sentences by looking at the key words.
Check the answers.
Step 4: Post-reading:
1. Ask one student to act according to the notes and others guess
which sentence it is.
2. After learn the table manners, let’s travel around the world to see
different customs.( Finish 2 in page 68)
Step 5: Summary
Ask the students to summarize what we have learned today. ( words,
phrases, object clause and some table manners
Step 6:Homework( three choices)
1. Find more eating customs on the Internet.
2. Introduce the most interesting one ( ppt, pictures)
3. Write a short passage about Chinese table manners.
Teaching reflections 1. Add the music in the rap and ask one students to be the leader.
2. At last, put the hand-made materials in the right order.
