Arteries (动脉) of the heart blocked by plaque can reduce the flow of blood to the
heart possibly resulting in heart attack and death. Plaque is caused by some chemicals
that gather on the inside of arteries. There is a medical process called angioplasty (血
管成形术), which can create more space in the artery and improves the flow of blood.
Many doctors choose this technique, because it is less invasive (切开的) than
bypass surgery (心脏搭桥手术). Yes, both involve entering the body, but in bypass
surgery, the chest must be opened, the ribs must be cut (we have 12 pairs of bones
that surround our chest), and the section of diseased artery must be removed and
replaced. To replace it, the patient's body is opened, once again, to acquire a healthy
section of artery. Usually, this part is removed from an artery located in the back part
of the leg. This means the patient now has two painful cuts that must heal at the same
time. There is far more risk in such bypass surgery than in angioplasty, which
involves threading a thin tube that has a special balloon into the circulatory system
and working it to the damaged artery.
Angioplasty begins with a distinctive dye that is put into the bloodstream. A thin
tube is then put into the circulatory system. Using X-rays, the doctor monitors the
path of the dye. It helps him move the tube through the heart and into the plaque filled
artery. Now the balloon starts to work: It becomes large, pressing against the sides of
the artery. The doctor then lets it get small and removes the tube. It is important to
note that the plaque has not been removed. Sometimes, a stent may be implanted, a
tiny metal tube that is expandable when necessary. Its function is to keep the artery
open.
There is good news and there is bad news. The good news is that the statistics
collected are superb. 90% of all angioplasty procedures are successful. The risk of
dying during an operation of this type is less than 2%. The risk of heart attack is also
small: 3-5%. The length of hospitalization is only three days. The bad news is that this
procedure treats the condition but does not get rid of the cause. There is a small
chance that the plaque will reappear.
58. What do we learn about plaque?
A. It improves the flow of blood.
B. It helps keep the arteries healthy.
C. It causes danger to people's health.
D. It exists mainly in the bloodstream.
59. What is the function of the balloon?
A. To keep the stent expanded.
B. To create space in the artery.
C. To get rid of the plaque.
D. To help the dye work.
60. What do the figures in the last paragraph show?
A. There is a great risk of dying during the operation.
B. There are some problems with the procedure.
C. Angioplasty has both good and bad news.
D. Angioplasty produces satisfying results.

Generally speaking, there are two kinds of people in our life. I call them takers and
givers.
Takers have a distinctive signature (明显特征): they like to get more than they give.
They tilt (使偏) reciprocity (互惠) in their own favor, putting their own interests
ahead of others’ needs. Takers believe that the world is a competitive, dog-eat-dog
place. By contrast, givers tilt reciprocity in the other direction, preferring to give more
than they get. Whereas takers tend to be self-focused, evaluating what other people
can offer them, givers are other-focused, paying more attention to what other people
need from them.
Outside the workplace, being a giver is quite common. But in the workplace, give
and take becomes more complicated. Professionally, few of us act purely like givers
or takers, adopting a third style instead. We become matchers, trying hard to preserve
an equal balance of giving and getting. When matchers help others, they protect
themselves by seeking reciprocity. If you’re a matcher, your relationships are
governed by even exchanges of favors.
Although we often regard givers as chumps and doormats, they turn out to be
surprisingly successful. Numerous studies and stories show that giving can be more
powerful and less dangerous than most people believe. Successful givers come from
many different walks of life, including consultants, lawyers, doctors, engineers,
salespeople, writers, entrepreneurs, accountants, teachers, financial advisers, and
sports executives. These givers reverse (使反转) the popular plan of succeeding first
and giving back later, raising the possibility that those who give first are often best
positioned for success later.
It takes time for givers to build goodwill and trust, but eventually, they establish
reputations (声誉) and relationships that enhance (提高) their success. In fact, you’ll
see that in sales and medical school, the giver advantage grows over time. In the long
run, giving can be every bit as powerful as it is dangerous. As Chip Conley, the
renowned entrepreneur who founded Joie de Vivre Hotels, explains, “Being a giver is
not good for a 100-yard dash, but it’s valuable in a marathon.”
Let me be clear that givers, takers, and matchers all can and do achieve success.
But there’s something distinctive that happens when givers succeed: it spreads. When
takers win, there’s usually someone else who loses. Research shows that people tend
to envy successful takers and look for ways to knock them down. In contrast, when
givers win, people are supporting them. As the venture capitalist Randy Komisar
remarks, “It’s easier to win if everybody wants you to win. If you don’t make enemies
out there, it’s easier to succeed.”
61.What can we learn about the three types of people?
A. Givers and matchers are usually competitive.
B. Matchers and takers are usually very greedy.
C. Takers often turn out to be top performers.
D. Matchers are most common in a company.
62. In many people’s eyes, givers _____.
A. are more likely to get hurt
B. will get more spiritual support
C. are usually in unfavorable situations
D. tend to get more advantages in competition
63. What is the author’s attitude towards givers?
A. Well begun is half done.
B. He who laughs last laughs best.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way.
D. God helps those who help themselves.
64. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Different attitudes to givers’ and takers’ success.
B. The chance of success for givers and takers.
C. The great influence of givers’ success.
D. Terrible results of takers’ success.

When there are debates about the world’s top performing education systems, the
names that usually get mentioned are the Asian powerhouses such as China, South
Korea and Singapore or the Nordic know-alls, such as Finland or Norway.
But with much less recognition, Canada has climbed into the top tier of
international rankings ( 排 名 ). In the most recent round of international PISA (the
Programme for International Student Assessment) tests, Canada was one of a handful
of countries to appear in the top 10 for maths, science and reading. The tests, run by
the OECD (the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), are a
major study of educational performance and show Canada’s teenagers are among the
best educated in the world. They are far ahead of their geographical neighbors such as
the US and European countries with strong cultural ties like the UK and France. At
university level, Canada has the world’s highest proportion (比例) of working-age
adults who have been through higher education — 55% compared with an average in
OECD countries of 35%.
Canada’s success in school tests is also very unusual compared with other
international trends. The top performers are often compact (紧凑的) societies and the
current highest achiever, Singapore, has been seen as a model of systematic progress,
with each part of the education system integrated ( 整 合 ) into a national strategy.
Canada does not even really have a national education system, it is based on
provinces and it is hard to think of a bigger contrast between a city state such as
Singapore and a sprawling land mass such as Canada. The OECD, trying to
understand Canada’s success in education, described the role of the federal
government as “limited and sometimes non-existent”.
Also not widely recognized is that Canada has a high level of migrants (移民) in its
school population. More than a third of young adults in Canada are from families
where both parents are from another country. But the children of newly-arrived,
migrant families seem to integrate rapidly enough to perform at the same high level as
their classmates.
When the most recent PISA rankings are looked at more closely, at regional rather
than national level, the results for Canada are even more remarkable. If Canadian
provinces entered PISA tests as separate countries, three of them, Alberta, British
Columbia and Quebec, would be in the top five places for science in the world.
So how has Canada overtaken so many other countries in education?
Andreas Schleicher, the OECD’s education director, says Canada’s “big uniting
theme is equity”. He says there is a strong sense of equal access — and this is seen in
the high academic performance of migrant children. Within three years of arriving,
the PISA tests show the children of new migrants have scores as high as the rest of
their schoolmates. It makes Canada one of the few countries where migrant children
achieve a level similar to that of their non-migrant counterparts. Another
distinguishing feature is that Canada’s teachers are well paid by international
standards — and entry into teaching is highly selective.
This has been a bumper year for education in Canada. The universities have record
levels of applications from overseas students seeing Canada as a North American
alternative to the United States. There has also been a Canadian winner of the Global
Teacher Prize. As Canada marks its 150th anniversary (周年纪念日), it can claim the
status of an education superpower.
65. What puts Canada in the top tier of education rankings?
A. Its large number of college students.
B. Its great performance in PISA tests.
C. Its being recognized by the OECD.
D. Its advanced education systems.
66. What can we learn about the education in Canada from Paragraph 3?
A. It follows the same path of Singapore.
B. It has a comprehensive national strategy.
C. Each province has its own education policies.
D. The federal government plays a powerful role in its success.
67. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. The general situation of education in Canada is less well-known.
B. Two thirds of young adults in Canada have Canadian parents.
C. Migrant students perform better than Canadian native ones.
D. It takes migrant children a long time to adapt to new life.
68. The underlined word “equity” in the last but one paragraph most probably means
“_____”.
A. fairness B. development C. simplicity D. independence
69. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The comparison between Canadian and American universities.
B. The benefit of studying in a foreign country like Canada.
C. The way to celebrate the 150th anniversary in Canada.
D. The educational achievement of Canada this year.
70. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. How Canada differs from other countries in education.
B. How Canada became an education superpower.
C. Why Canada pays great attention to education.
D. What led to Canada’s success in science.
第四部分:任务型阅读 (共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当
的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Attitude means the way you think and feel about something or a way of thinking
and feeling that affect a person’s behavior. There are four attitudes that I believe most
influence your sports efforts.
The first one is ownership, which involves how you are connected to sports and
why you participate. Do you “own” your sports involvement? What this question gets
at is whether you’re taking control of everything that impacts your sport. You don’t
want to leave anything that might affect your athletic performances to chance or to
other people. Whether physical, technical, or mental, you’ll only achieve your sports
goals if you take full responsibility for every aspect of your sport.
The next one is process. We live in a world where results matter. You progress
because you get results. But contrary to popular belief, focusing on results actually
makes you unable to get the results you want. Why? Well, if you are focusing on
results, you are not focusing on what you need to do to get those results, namely, what
you need to do to perform your best from the start to the finish. My basic belief is:
“Results matter, but to get them, ignore them.” The bottom line is that if you focus on
the process, there is a better chance that the results will come.
The third one is challenge. I often see athletes viewing competitions or difficult
conditions as a threat. In a way, this calls forth your inborn fight-or-flight response
and, most often, flight is the option that is chosen. Thus, to perform your best and
attain your goals, you must see every aspect of your sport as a challenge to face, not a
threat to avoid. This challenge reaction creates confidence, determination, and
excitement, resulting in aggressive (积极进取的) and intense (兴奋的) performances.
The last one is long-term. We live in a culture that is accustomed to getting everything
fast without taking much effort, such as instant messages and Internet searches. As a
result, it’s easy to believe that you need results right away or you won’t achieve your
sports goals. It’s also easy to become impatient and frustrated (挫败的) when you
don’t get those results right away, particularly when you see your competitors getting
the results that you want. But the reality is that results don’t come quickly or easily or
necessarily when you want them to. Therefore, to have your best chance of achieving
your sports goals, you must adopt a long-term attitude toward your development.
With this attitude, you’ll perform better because you’re not stressed out about results,
thus better positioning you to get the results you want when they really matter at some
point in the future.
Attitudes for athletic success
Ownership ●It involves the (71) _____ you have with the sport as well as your
(72) _____ of joining in the sport.
●Sports involvement means your ability to control all possible (73)
_____ aspects of your athletic success.
Process ●People tend to focus on results, which actually (74) _____ you
from getting your desired results by taking your attention away
from your (75) _____.
●(76) _____ your focus from results to process, and you are more
likely to achieve athletic success.
Challenge ●Feeling (77) _____ by competitions or difficulties most probably
causes you to flee.
●Take the challenge attitude towards the sport, and you will be
confident, (78) _____ and excited, so that you’ll perform
aggressively and intensely.
Long-term ●Failing to get the desired results immediately often results in loss
of confidence as well as (79) _____ and frustration.
●Believe that athletic success is achieved (80) _____. In this way,
you’ll perform better because you can position yourself better in a
calm way.
