In the summer before seventh grade our family moved and I said goodbye to everything that
was familiar. For my parents it was a good thing because it meant owning a home for the first
time. But it meant that I’d have to change schools and that put some butterflies in my stomach.
On the first day of school, kids jammed the school grounds. That’s when I met Barbara. We
made a nervous conversation and soon learned we were in the same class. She was funny and we
had a lot in common. But she was very critical of others and sometimes of me.She made fun of my
bushy hair,my big glasses and the clothes I wore. But it seemed as though the things we had in
common were more important than the annoyances.
The girls in the “popular” crowd had also been exposed to her sharp tongue. One day,one of
the girls approached me while I gathered my books.“We really like you,” she said.“The only way
you can play with us,though,is if you keep your distance from Barbara.”
Were those girls only trying to make trouble between the two of us?Would they watch me
dump (抛弃) Barbara and then dump me for laughs?
From the corner of my eye I found two of the other girls from the group. They were watching
me and giggling (咯咯地笑).I wondered if I was cool enough for them.I didn’t want to make the
choice they were forcing me to make.So I shook my head and said,“I don’t think so.I like Barbara
and we’re good friends.” Then I gathered my books and ran away.
Even though Barbara still annoyed me at times,I knew I’d done the right thing.I’d made my
own decision about a girl who had befriended me when I badly needed a friend. When she moved
the following year I missed her friendship terribly. But what I kept has never left me—my
self-respect.

David Rees runs a truly distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their
pencils to perfection, using a variety of tools.
I know what you’re thinking—is this a joke?The 39-year-old gets asked that question a
lot.To clarify everything,he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he’s
actually providing a real service.
You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B
pencils. After that,he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag,and an
authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous
object.
To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general
sandpaper, pocket knives and even a special $450 sharpening machine.“It depends on what the
customer wants to use his/her pencil for,” he says. That determines the most appropriate
pencil-sharpening technique. Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others
buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.
$15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right? You’re not the only one that
feels that way,and David’s unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of
inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But
others will say,“This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise
along with the business.”

Have you ever considered how important transportation is to the world? 1 We would
have to get or make our own food, our own clothes, even our books, and newspapers.Everything
that we have come to depend on is brought to us.Even the water that we drink is transported
through pipelines from wells to our homes and offices. We have come to depend on the availability
of three principal kinds of transportation:land, sea and air.
Automobiles, railroads, trucks and pipelines are the principal means of land transportation. 2
Without our principal means of air transportation—the airplane,we would have to slow down our
lives and commerce.
Nearly every major city in the world provides some form of public transportation. 3 The
most common form is the bus.Buses have been in use in major cities since approximately
1900.They provide transportation service on countless routes from the city center to the
suburbs.
Subways are mostly found in large cities. The subway is an underground system of high speed
trains, which move more quickly and efficiently than buses. And they will deliver you to within
walking distance of almost any place in the city. 4
Cabs are more expensive than buses or subways, but they will deliver you to the exact
location you want in the shortest time possible. 5 And as an added attraction, many cab
drivers will tell you stories about their adventures or even the details of their life stories.
If you ever visit a major city in another country, you will probably have no trouble getting
around. However,no matter what form of transportation you adopt, you may come to the conclusion
that the most inexpensive and reliable form of transportation will be your own two legs.
A.Transportation is surely of great importance to us.
B.Without transportation modern life wouldn’t exist.
C.It is cheap and helps to reduce the traffic problems.
D.Ships form the chief means of water transportation.
E.You will quickly find out about the heavy traffic during rush hours.
F.They are convenient if you are in a hurry or taking along lots of luggage.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went
home together. One day,Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a
corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手)this quarre1. We have
nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with
us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off ha ran. Henry want straight home,
and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great
deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that
true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he
ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and
continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with
him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day
after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and
had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth.
He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got
out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
