For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about,
trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you'll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life.
As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all 1
longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing
even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition. My hope of getting a
diploma(毕业证书) was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I
thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile
arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a
normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't
give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That's the answer,” I said to myself.
Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why
don't you come back to school?”
I laughed: “There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was
enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just
smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was
still there in my heart.

【答案】It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids
was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy
married woman having loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hardworking student
working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back
again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Linda and I helped each other through the time. When I was down, Linda encouraged me. “Mom,
you can’t quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was
really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost
all of my classmates voted for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The
unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.

My crippled(瘸腿) grandmother was dancing. I stood in the living room doorway, absolutely
shocked. I heard her sing when I opened the door but did not want to interrupt her by shouting I had
arrived. She was wearing beautiful dancing shoes and her legs obeyed her perfectly. As long as I could
remember, she was once the pet of the dancing world. But it was all over after a sudden accident. She
had always limped(一瘸一拐地走),helped with a cane(拐杖).
She turned around and saw me standing in the doorway. Her song ended, and her beautiful
movements with it. Grandma turned towards the kitchen. She was walking with no difficulties in her
beautiful shoes. I followed her, not believing my eyes.
“So…” I asked surprisedly but happily, “How did your leg heal(康复)?”
“To tell you the truth—my legs have been well all my life,” she said.
“But I don’t understand!” I said, “ I mean… You pretended all these years?
“Very much so,” Grandmother closed her eyes, “And for a very good reason.”
“What reason?”
“Your grandfather.”
“You mean he told you not to dance?”
“No, this was my choice. I am sure I would have lost him if I had continued dancing. I weighed
fame(名声)and love against each other and love won.”
“We were talking about engagement(订婚)when your grandfather had to go to war. It was the
most terrible day of my life when he left. I was so afraid of losing him, the only way I could stay
peaceful was to dance. And then one day a letter came. There were only three sentences:‘I have lost
my leg. I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. It is best you forget about
me.’”
Grandma continued to tell me that Grandfather was in hospital and she made her decision not to
give him up. She took her leave, and traveled away from the city.
Several weeks later, she returned.

【答案】Several weeks later, she returned. She had bought herself a cane and wrapped her leg tightly
with bandages. She told everyone she had been in a car crash and that her leg would never completely
heal again. Her dancing days were over. No one suspected the story—She had learned to limp
convincingly before she returned home. Then she traveled to the hospital. She saw my grandfather
seated in his wheelchair with a cane on the ground nearby.
She took a deep breath, leaned on her cane and limped to Grandfather. She told him she had an
accident and a leg was injured seriously. She showed him two engagement rings she had bought the
day after he left for the war. “I was not going to waste them on any other man.” Grandma said to him.
Then Grandfather bent to take his cane from the ground but Grandma was not going to help. And so he
managed it on his own and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.

词数应为 150 左右。
An urgent call came into Jim Green’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had
spent the afternoon at the beach bar, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards,
or $150 in cash — but her wedding ring was inside.
Jim, 42, didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the
wallet. He spent hours checking the video tapes from 16 different surveillance cameras(监控摄像机),
watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her
ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man approached the bench, quickly put something in his pocket,
and walked off. Jim posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. “I just asked if anybody knew who the
guy was,” Jim said.
Within hours, Jim got a text from 17-year-old Peter. Peter admitted to having taken the wallet and
told Jim he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was
fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean. Then he bought a
sandwich.
Jim, unsure whether he believed Peter, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to
talking, and Peter revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the
woods for a week. Jim, a father of two, looked closely at Peter — his small height, his ruddy cheeks
— and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.
But the risks were high. The police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring,
Peter could be facing a serious crime charge. “I had to help him somehow,” Jim says.
The police wanted Jim to bring the teen down to the station. Instead, Jim called the police and
told them, “He’s going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1
Jim hired two local divers to search the waters where Peter had thrown the wallet. A detective
was waiting for them there. A crowd had gathered to watch the two divers search in the strong current.
More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring. Jim grew worried, especially when the detective
began questioning Peter, trying to get him to admit keeping the ring.
Paragraph 2
And then a diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers broke out
in the crowd. When Jim called the wallet’s owner, she burst into tears. She promptly dropped the
charge against Peter for stealing the ring. But it wasn’t over for Jim. He’d been troubled about Peter
sleeping in the cold woods. Jim knew his home was big enough to give Peter a place to live in for a
while. He told the teen he could stay with his family until the boy got on his feet again.

One day Mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and
always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, Mom pulled
over. She hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.
''It'll just be a minute,'' she said.
Impatiently, I caught sight of a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the
building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, ''Do you know someone there?'' She shook
her head. ''Then what did you do with the flowers? '' She smiled slightly, ''I gave them to the
receptionist. '' ''What?'' She laughed at my confusion. ''I told the receptionist to give the flowers to
whoever needed them.''
I kept silent for a moment. Then I asked her, ''Did you leave your name? '' To this she answered
instantly, ''No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good,
which is enough of a thank for me.''
Lost in thought, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be
worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the
garage was.
Not knowing what to do, Mom and I decided to walk back to the nursing home and seek help.
When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the
old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was.
It amazed us what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received them. While we
were laughing and talking merrily, we received the news that the garage had got our car repaired.
As we drove along the road, a flower shop came into sight.

Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the pleasant
scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her.
