三、阅读理解
Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet ... We can see and hear the word
"diet" everywhere. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products
that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for
products that harm us psychologically and physically.
Diet products weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to
admit(承认)that our weight problems lie not actually in losing the weight, but in controlling the
taking in fatty, high-calorie and unhealthy food. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking
stage and go straight for the scale(秤) instead. All we have to do is to eat or know the word "diet"
in food labels.
On another level, diet products have greater psychological influence. Every time we have a
zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to
get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be
without difficulty or efforts.
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological influence they have on us, but
also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet food can indirectly harm our bodies because taking
in it instead of healthy food means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients (营养
物 ). Diet food and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created
chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and chemicals
that go into diet products are probably dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the influence that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously
think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals.
Once we realize this, we will be much better able to refuse diet products. And through this, we can
prevent the psychological harm that comes from using diet products.
( )l. From Paragraph l, we learn that .
A. diet products fail to bring out people's potential
B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products
C. diet products are misleading people
D. people are fed up with diet products
3
( )2. One psychological influence of diet products is that people would like to
.
A. try out a variety of diet food
B. hesitate before they enjoy diet food
C. pay attention to their own eating habits
D. watch their weight rather than their diet
( )3. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products .
A. are over-consumed(过度消费的) B. lack basic nutrients
C. are short of chemicals D. provide too much energy

There are some skills for students to listen to teachers in class, which means you're going to
have to practise it. Just as you would have to practise basketball to be a better player, you also
have to practise listening. 1 Here are some suggestions.
One of the things you need to do is to make sure that your mind doesn't wander(漫游). It's
easy to start thinking about other things, especially when you're not interested.in the subject. 2
Next, listen for the main ideas. If you want to catch every little piece of information, you'll
feel tired and bored. 3 Not only does this show respect to the teacher, but also it helps
prevent your mind from wandering. 4 Or it could just be someone talking to the neighbours
who shouldn't be. It can even be some birds outside the classroom window, or a group of kids who
are talking loudly as they pass the door to your room.
Finally, you need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said.
You'll have to take down the notes so that you can study them after class. 5
Listening isn't always easy, but if you follow these simple steps, you'll be much more
successful in your classes.
A. How to listen at school?
B. You’ll also need to look at the teacher.
C. Helping each other is a good way.
D. Taking notes also makes you pay attention to the class.
E. You don’t need to take too many notes in class.
F. It might be a friend who is trying to pass you a note.
G. So make yourself pay attention to what the teacher is saying.

Without proper planning, tourism( 旅 游 业 ) can cause problems. For example, too many
tourists can make public places crowded, which are also enjoyed by the local people. If tourists
cause too much traffic, the local people will feel unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and treat
them impolitely. But they forget how much tourism can help the local economy. It is important to
think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept to
attract the tourists by the local government. The local government should also care about the
health and happiness of the local people when developing tourism.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people can leave other
jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other
parts of the local economy can become worse.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs, and businesses can
also lose money. It costs much money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads and other
support facilities(设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, each room of the first-class
tourism hotel usually costs about 50 thousand dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren't used most of
the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including
roads to get to the hotel, electricity and so on. All of these support facilities cost money. If these
facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.
1. How will the local people feel if tourists cause too much traffic?
2. What should be kept by the local government to attract tourists?
3. Do you think it’s good for people to leave jobs to work in the tourism industry? Why or why
not?
