"How are you ?"is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the
United States use.(1) It's a question than often doesn't need an answer. The person who
asks,"How are you?"
expects to hear the answer"Fine, "even if the person isn't fine. The reason is that"How are
you ?"isn't really a question and "Fine"isn't really an answer. They are common ways of
saying"hello"or"hi".
(2) For example, when someone asks"Do you agree?", the other person may be
thinking, "No, I don't. I think you're wrong."It isn't polite to disagree very strongly, so
he might say, "I am not so sure. "(3)
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other
people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, "I've
got to go now, "or the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as "Someone is at
the door,"or,"Something is burning on the stove. "(4) The person who wants to
hang up simply doesn' t want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is
polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation,
people often don't say exactly what they are thinking,(5)
A. This is a nicer way to say that you don' t agree with someone.
B. You'd better not to tell the truth to your family.
C. However, "How are you? "is also an unusual question.
D. The excuse may be real, or not.
E. Sometimes, people don't say exactly what they mean.
F. If you disagree with others, they will hate you.
G. This is one way of being nice to people, and it's a part of the game of language.

I like writing; I like meeting people; I like discovering new things, then
telling everyone about them; and I like showing up on TV and I also like
finding my name written on newspapers. 101.
Of course, I began to write for my school magazine, did unpaid work on
my local newspaper, took a master’s degree, got a part-time job and then
became a full-time journalist.102. .
As you can imagine, I keep busy and tired every day. I can hardly count
the emails that I haven’t noticed. I have come back home empty-handed lots of times.
Once I ran around knocking on doors in a dark street on a cold and snowy night to find a
woman who woke in the night to find water pouring on her head. 103. I
wrote the story and…then I opened the newspaper to find my report at the back, with no name on
it, only 100 words long. 104. That is because I strongly believe that if I do
succeed, the reward(回报) of journalism are truly great.
Once I wrote about an old people’s home where the old were living in rooms that were full of
fleas (跳蚤). A week after the story was reported on the newspaper, some of old people phoned
me, full of joy. They told me that the managers had said sorry to them and promised to change
their ways.
Journalism can be dangerous and boring with long and uncertain work hours. And the pay (at
least in the UK) is usually terrible. 105. For me, there is no better job than

Many foreigners have the thought that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu. This is,
of course, a silly belief. 101
Like most people from the western countries, I was first
introduced to kung fu through Hong Kong action films. 102
The cool and wonderful performances they gave in films made them
well known in the US and some other countries. I think the most
exciting ones include Rumble In The Bronx and Enter The Dragon.
However, my own personal interest in kung fu was actually inspired by a hip-hop group.
Wu-Tang Clan was founded in the early 1990s in New York City. 103 In their songs,
they sometimes mention philosophical concepts(哲学理念)that come from wudang quan 一 the
style of Chinese martial arts from which they take their name 一 and the Shaolin Monastery. I was
just a teenager when I first started listening to Wu-Tang Clan 一 little did I know that I would
actually end up living in China later in my life!
I do not practice kung fu myself. 104 There is a Bruce Lee's quote(引文)that I often
think of when I'm tired to face the challenges in life. "Be formless…shapeless, like water," he
once said. By this, he meant that you should be ready to adapt(调整)and change your attitudes or
beliefs when you face difficulties. I think this is a good way to deal with life.
105 It has its own strength and beauty. Maybe we foreigners won't understand it
completely forever, but we still love it, the mysterious, fascinating Chinese treasure!
A. Stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan made kung fu popular in the Western world.
B. I started to learn Chinese kung fu when I was very young.
C. But it is true that kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
D. I think Bruce Lee is much stronger than Jackie Chan.
E. It is one of the most influential hip-hop groups in history.
F. Chinese kung fu is a very important symbol of China.
G However, the meanings behind it are quite interesting to me.
