Teaching aims:
After learning this period, the students will be able to
1. understand the ways to create different types of unusual pictures;
2. make an unusual picture of their own and write a short article about how to make it.
3. learn to appreciate the beautiful aspects in our daily lives and have a positive attitude towards
life.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Lead-in
Play a video about the unusual way to make pictures using sand. After that, ask the students the
following two questions:
(1) What did the painter use to draw the pictures?
(2) What else can we use to create pictures?
Step 2. Skimming
Have the students skim the text and find the answer to the question below:
What types of unusual pictures are mentioned in the passage?
There are altogether five types of unusual pictures in the passage, i.e. pizza faces, string pictures,
feather and seashell pictures, rubbish pictures and rubbish prints.
After the students have found the answers, show the five types of unusual pictures one by one, so
that the students can get a clear understanding about what these unusual pictures look like.
Step 3. Scanning
Organize the students into small groups of four to read the passage carefully and fill in the
following chart.

members. Each group will only focus on one way to make unusual pictures and complete the chart.
When the given time is due, each group should send one student to present their finding.

Step 4. Discussion
After reading the passage and knowing about the ways to make unusual pictures, the students are
asked to think about other types of unusual pictures.
Are there other types of unusual pictures?
The students are encouraged to discuss with their group members.
The teacher will show the students some pictures made from other unusual materials, e.g. cloth,
paper fans, leaves, fruits and vegetables, beans, potato chips, popcorns and so on.
Besides painting on paper, we can also paint on other materials, such as stones, eggs, coffee and so
on.
Step 5. Let’s do the project!
1. Planning: grouping the students into a team of three or four and decide on the name of their
unusual picture

2. Preparing: discussing the tasks for each member of the team
Who is responsible for the design of the unusual picture?
Who takes charge of the materials to be found?
Who writes the text?
Who presents the oral report?
The deadline for our project is __________________________________
3. Producing:
Each member of the group starts his/ her work within the time due. Before the given time is due,
remind the students to edit their text like sentence structure, organization, punctuation, vocabulary,
grammar, spelling, etc.
4. Presenting:
(1) When the set time is due, ask the students to present their report orally.
(2) Put their art works on the display wall of the classroom for everyone to see.
Ask the students to work in groups. First, make an unusual picture. Second, write a short article to
give directions on how to make the picture. Third, present the picture to the whole class. And at
last, put all the pictures together to make a small book.
Step 6. Show time
Ask the representative of each group to come to the front of the classroom and show the work of
their group to the whole class.
Step 7. Extension
Can you imagine making a meal into a work of art?
In order to help the students have a positive attitude towards life, the teacher will show them some
pictures of beautifully-decorated meals so that they can learn to appreciate the beautiful aspects in
our daily life and enjoy their life everyday.
