Students’ Worksheet
A. Read the following review of a painting.
Monet’s Water Lilies
“Water lilies” is a series of oil paintings by a French impressionist Claude Monet
(1840-1926). Such water lilies were the main focus of his artistic production during his
last thirty years. This realistic painting was produced at the end of 1900.
A bridge is put in the middle of the painting. It is covered by vines with a green
shore in the background. Red, white and violet water lilies lie in the bed of water, asleep.
The smooth water is charming in the sunlight and seems to be flowing thanks to rich
colours and beautiful strokes. Monet painted with a proper contrast between light and
shade. The change of water reflects every color in the world---the clouds’, the jungle’s,
the bridge’s and the water lilies’. The painting is not like a photograph.
As Monet once said, landscapes were nothing but an impression. Watching the
painting, you may feel as if you were just standing beside a pond of water lilies. If it is
winter, the painting may remind you of the splendid spring. He deserves the reputation as
“Father of Impressionism”.
B. Take some notes while you are listening to the teacher and discussing with your
group members.
