Teaching plan of Unit 4 Reading, The Vincent Van Gogh Exhibition Oxford English Senior 2B Teaching objectives: In this class, students will 1. Read more about Van Gogh’s life and try to understand his special personality and painting style. Appreciate some of his paintings and observe the things he painted, the way he painted them and the way he used colors. 2. Listen to a song written in memory of Vincent Van Gogh and try to understand how the lyrics described Vincent’s painting style and the singer’s feelings for him. 3. Become more interested in art and music. Understand why Vincent deserves such a great reputation today, why people honor him and his works and how we can cherish life better. Teaching procedures: Step 1: Brief revision of Van Gogh’s life and painting style that students have learned in the first reading text. (5 minutes) Step 2: Appreciating some of Van Gogh’s paintings. (20 minutes) Step 3: Listen to Starry Starry Night with the help of lyrics. (13 minutes) There are different versions of the song. The original version was composed and sung by Don McLean, an American folk singer. Step 4: Conclusion (2 minutes) Important phrases and expressions: Minister / art dealer / Hague / the ministry / Amsterdam / missionary / Belgium / miner/ asylum (精神病院) / palette / mauve / agitated / swirling / twisted /commit / suicide / take one’s life Some of Vincent Van Gogh’s works: Potatoes Eaters;(早期作品:吃土豆的人) Irises (鸢尾花) Blossoming Chestnut Branches (开花的栗树); Lilacs (丁香花);Pink Peach Tree in Blossom (盛开的桃树) Wheat Field with Reaper and Sun (麦田与收割者); Red Poppies and Daisies (红罂粟和雏菊); Starry Night over the Rhone (隆河的星夜) The Church at Auvers (奥维尔教堂) Vincent’s Bedroom in Arles (文森特在阿尔的卧室) Night Café with Pool Table (夜晚的咖啡馆); Starry Night (星夜),Sunflowers (向日葵) Some critics of his paintings: Starry Night: This painting is probably the most popular of Vincent's works. The Sunflowers: Dr. Jan Hulsker, one of the world's foremost scholars of Vincent van Gogh, suggests that the sunflower series "perhaps more than any other of his paintings, have made him known throughout the world. They are often the only works with which he is identified." C. Night Café with Pool Table (夜晚的咖啡馆) Vincent van Gogh’s quotation, “I have tried to express with red and green the terrible passions of human nature.” Lyrics of Starry Starry Night: Starry, starry night paint your palette blue and grey (调色板) look out on a summer’s day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul shadows on the hills sketch the trees and the daffodils (勾画) (水仙) catch the breeze and the winter chills (寒 冷) in colors on the snowy linen land (亚麻) now I understand what you tried to say to me and how you suffered for your sanity (心 智健全) and how you tried to set them free they would not listen they did not know how perhaps they'll listen now starry, starry night flaming flowers that brightly blazed (燃烧, 发光) swirling clouds and violet haze (薄雾) reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue colors changing hue (色调) morning fields of amber grey (琥珀色) weathered faces lined in pain (经历风霜 的) are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand (抚慰) now I understand what you tried to say to me and how you suffered for your sanity and how you tried to set them free they would not listen they did not know how perhaps they'll listen now or they could not love you but still your love was true and when no hope was left inside on that starry, starry night you took your life as lovers often do but I could have told you, Vincent this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you starry starry night portraits hung in empty halls (肖像) frameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can't forget. like the stranger that you've met the ragged men in ragged clothes (褴褛 的) the silver thorn of bloody rose (荆棘,刺) lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow (纯洁的) now I think I know what you tried to say to me and how you suffered for your sanity and how you tried to set them free they would not listen they're not listening still perhaps they never will References: http://www.vangoghgallery.com http://way2goal.com/meng/movie/starrynight.html
