Who's who 真假难辨
It has never been (explain) why university students seem to enjoy
practical jokes more than anyone else. Students specialize in a particular type of
practical joke: the hoax. (Invite) the fire-brigade to put out a non-existent
fire is a crude form of deception which no self-respecting student would ever indulge
in. Students often create amusing situations are funny to everyone except
the victims.
When a student recently saw two workmen using a pneumatic drill outside his
university, he immediately (telephone) the police and informed them that
two students dressed up as workmen were tearing up the road with a pneumatic drill.
As soon as he had hung up, he went over to the workmen and told them that if a
policeman ordered them to go away, they were not to take him ( serious). He
added that a student had dressed up as a policeman and was playing all (sort)of
silly jokes on people. Both the police and the workmen were ( grate) to the
student for this piece of advance information.
The student hid in an archway nearby where he could watch and hear everything
that went on. Sure enough, a policeman arrived on the scene and politely asked the
workmen to go away. When he received a very rude reply from one of the workmen,
he threatened to remove them force. The workmen told him to do as he
pleased and the policeman telephoned for help. Shortly afterwards, four more
policemen arrived and (remonstrate)with the workmen. As the men
refused to stop working, the police attempted to seize the pneumatic drill. The
workmen struggled fiercely and one of them lost his temper. He threatened to call the
police. At this, the police pointed out ironically that this would hardly be necessary as
the men were already under arrest. Pretending to speak seriously, one of the workmen
asked if he might make a telephone call before being (take) to the station.
Permission was granted and a policeman (accompany) him to a pay phone.
Only when he saw that the man was ( actual) telephoning the police did he
realize that they had all been the victims of a hoax.

谁也弄不清为什么大学生好像比任何人都更喜欢恶作剧。大学生擅长一种特
殊的恶作剧——戏弄人。请消防队来扑灭一场根本没有的大火是一种低级骗局,
有自尊心的大学生决不会去做。大学生们常常做的是制造一种可笑的局面,除了
受害者大家都觉得非常滑稽。

Easy Ways to Build Vocabulary
It’s not all that hard to build an advanced and large vocabulary.Like many things
in life,it’s 1 ongoing process, and the best part of the process is that there’s
enough room for improvement, 2 means you’ll just keep getting better and
better.Of course you have to work at it.You wouldn’t think that a few 3 (month)
of exercise in your teens would be enough 4 the rest of your life, and that’s also
true for building your vocabulary—you have to keep at it daily, and pretty soon you
will find that you have an excellent vocabulary.
One of the 5 (effect) ways to build vocabulary is to read good books. You
need to 6 (real) read at least one good book a week, preferably a classic. This
isn’t as hard as it 7 (sound),and it is far better than any other method because you
improve your vocabulary while 8 (read) an interesting piece of literature.Another
nice thing is that you learn both new words and 9 (they) use
unconsciously, meaning that you will tend to use the words 10 (learn) this way in
conversations almost automatically.
1.an 考查冠词。句意:和生活中许多事情一样,积累词汇也是一个不断发展
的过程……因此用不定冠词 an 表示泛指。
2.which 考查定语从句。which 在句中为关系代词,引导非限定性定语从句,
并在从句中作主语。
3.months 考查名词。month 为可数名词,由 a few 可知 month 应用复数形式。
4.for 考查介词。be enough for sth.“对……已足够”。
5.effective 考查形容词。此处要表达的是“有效的方法之一”,因此填
effective。
6.really 考查副词。此处修饰动词 read,所以用副词形式,因此填 really。
7.sounds 考查主谓一致。本句描述的是一般事实,且主语为 it,因此填
sounds。
8.reading 考查非谓语动词。逻辑主语 you 与动词 read 为主动关系,故用动
词-ing 形式作状语。
9.their 考查代词。use 在此处是名词,故用形容词性物主代词 their 作定语。
10.learned/learnt 考查非谓语动词。words 与 learn 是逻辑上的动宾关系,因
此用过去分词作后置定语修饰。
