Atrulyremarkablefigure inthehistoryofscience!MariaSklodowska-CuriebecamethefirstPoletoreceiveaNobelPrize.Perhapsthemostfamousofallwomenscientists,MariaSklodowska-Curieisnotableforhermanyfirsts:Shewasthefirsttousethetermradioactivityforthisphenomenon.ShewasthefirstwomaninEuropetoreceiveherdoctorateofscience.In1903,shebecamethefirstwomantowinaNobelPrizeforPhysics.Theaward,jointlyawardedtoCurie,herhusbandPierre,andHenriBecquerel,wasforthediscoveryofradioactivity.Shewasalsothefirstfemalelecturer,professorandheadofLaboratoryattheSorbonneUniversityinParis(1906).In1911,shewonanunprecedentedsecondNobelPrize(thistimeinchemistry)forherdiscoveryandisolationofpureradiumandradiumcomponents.ShewasthefirstpersonevertoreceivetwoNobelPrizes.Shereceived15goldmedals,19degrees,andotherhonors.
