Hoy stood up to throw the first ball of the World Series. Most people at Crowley Field on that day probably did not remember Hoy because he had retired (退休) from professional beseball 58 years earlier in 1903. However, he had been an outstanding player and the deaf people still talk about him and his years in baseball. William E. Hoy was born in Houckstown Ohio on May 23, 1862. He became deaf when he was two years old. He attended the Columbus Ohio School for the deaf. After graduation he started playing baseball while working as a shoemaker. He began playing professional baseball in 1886 for Oshkosh (Wisconsin) of the Northwestern League. In 1888 he started as an outfielder(外场手)with the old Washington Senators. His small figure and speed made him an outstanding base runner. He was very good at stealing bases during his career. In the 1888 major league season he stole 82 bases. He was also the Senators leading hitter in 1888. Hoy was clever and he threw right-handed and batted left- handed. On June 19,1889 he threw out three batters( 击球手) at the plate from his outfield position. The arm signals used by judges today to show balls and strikes began because of Hoy. The judge lifted his right arm to show that the pitch was a strike and his left arm to signal that it was a ball. For many years people talked about Hoy’s last ball game in 1903. He was playing for Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast Winter League. It was a memorable game because Hoy hit a wonderful ball which won the game. It was a very foggy day and therefore very hard to see the ball. In the ninth inning(棒球 的一局) with two men out, Hoy managed to catch a fly ball to make the third out in spite of the fog. Los Angeles defeated their opposition and won the game. After he retired Hoy stayed busy. He ran a dairy farm near Cincinnati for 20 years. He also became a public speaker and traveled giving speeches. Until a few years before his death he took 4-10 mile walks several mornings a week. On December 15, 1961 William Hoy died at the age of 99. 41. In which order did the following things happen in Hoy’s life? a. Hoy worked as a shoemaker. b. Hoy began to run a dairy farm. c. They've built habitable space stations that orbit the Earth. The next giant leap for mankind is to reach another planet-specifically, Mars. The problem is that it's no easy task. The planet is 586 times further away from the Earth than the moon, and it'll take around 180 to 220 days to reach Mars, depending on where each planet is in its orbit. Such long periods in space have suggested many potential health problems, including hormonal changes, skin conditions, and muscle and bone deterioration(损耗). Here's where some furry friends come in. A wide range of animals have been in space, from fruit flies and spiders to cats, and dogs. Such experiments began as far back as the late 1940s in first tests to see if living things could withstand the extreme g-force(重力)of a rocket launch. Mice continue to play a very important part in space experiments, mainly because the animals make excellent test subjects. They're small, which makes them inexpensive and easy to care for. In addition, their size and short life span make it possible to do the equivalent of several human years of tests in a much shorter time. Finally, because mice are mammals, they share many common characteristics with humans in terms of genetics, biology and behavior. Astromice have hit the headlines recently, as a team of scientists led by Betty Nusgens, professor of biology at the University of Liege in Belgium, found that the mice suffered a 15 percent thinning of their skin after 91 days aboard the International Space Station(ISS). This experiment was part of a wider NASA mission (任务) called the Mice Drawer System ( MDS ) .The Italian Space Agency developed the facility, which allows six mice to be housed, monitored, and automatically fed and watered aboard the ISS, among which three survived during the mission. The mice have participated in 20 separate experiments, to study such effects as osteoporosis (骨质 疏松症), anemia(贫血)and heart health. Results for the 20 experiments are coming in gradually. But it's clear that mice continue to play an important role in the ongoing quest to conquer the final frontier. 45. We can infer from Paragraphs 2-3 that ______. A. Mars is the farthest planet away from Earth discovered so far B. animals that have been sent into space have mostly survived C. it was in the late 1940s that animals were first sent to the ISS D. the journey to Mars could put humans' health at risk 46. The underlined word "withstand" in Para 3 means _______. A. set up B. hold up C. work out D. come across 47. According to Betty Nusgens and her team, the mice aboard the ISS _______. A. suffered the loss of part of their skin B. all survived for the duration of the mission C. were fed and watered by the astronauts D. participated in 20 experiments that made great breakthroughs 48. The main purpose of the article is to ______. A. describe the role mice play in scientific research B. report on the results of the Mice Drawer System C. analyze how mice could pave the way to Mars 5 D. change people's traditional attitudes toward mice Part III Translation (8 marks) Dear Mr. Wang, 49. 当我知道我们图书馆要买书籍时, 我想给一些建议。 What we need most are popular science books. 50. New research, however, has showed that the world’s largest land animals have a secret trick of controlling their body temperatures. Scientists have long been puzzled by temperature regulation(调节)in elephants. Generally, animals with large bodies tend to hold more heat because, compared to their size, they have a small surface area for heat to escape from. Elephants, with their heavy-weight frames, would appear to be at a disadvantage in the heat of their African and Asian habitats, especially because they have thick fur to protect them from bushes and trees. Scientists thought that these creatures, which weigh up to 13 tons when fully-grown, grow large ears to help them stay cool. The skin on the ears is thinner, so blood which flows into them cools down more easily. But findings by researchers at two universities in Vienna have showed that elephants are also able to cool down by increasing the blood flow to skin patches(斑) in other parts of their bodies. The researchers studied six African elephants at Vienna Zoo as they moved between outdoor and indoor environments to see how the temperature on their skin surface would change. They found up to 15 "hot spots" all over an elephant’s body surface, in addition to large patches on the ears. The study shows how these patches expand as the air temperature increases and more blood flows nearer to the skin surface. Other experiments show that elephants in the wild use the same “windows” to control their body temperature. Elephants have two additional ways to stay cool: flapping(拍打) the ears and bathing. Together with these tricks, the skin hot spots: allow the animals to keep their body temperature always at about 36 degrees —one degree less than humans’. 31. What can we know about the elephants? A. They have thick fur to protect them. 8 B. They live in cool areas in Africa and Asia. C. They can weigh up to 3 tons when fully-grown. D. They are afraid of water and rivers. 32. The function of the thinner skin on elephants’ ears is to_______. A. control their body temperature B. help hold more heat C. drive away insects D. keep sensitive hearing 33. The new research_______. A. studied six Asian elephants B. studied elephants in a zoo and in the wild C. aimed to discover the elephants’ disadvantages D. proved that scientists’ earlier beliefs were totally true B MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites which only provide stories about other people. MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Started two years ago, it is a big source of information for and about American kids. Teenagers and their parents feel very different about it. Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents' worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era. For teenagers, it is reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, afterschool jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information. "MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone. I don't have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if I want to get in touch with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace," said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16-year-old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Parents on the other hand are seriously concerned about the security problems of Myspace. "Every time we hold a parents’ meeting, the first question is always about MySpace ," said Kent Gates ,who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars(研讨会).The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children has received at least 288 MySpace-related complaints, according to Mary Beth Buchanan, a lawyer in Pittsburgh. "Your profile on MySpace shows all your personal information to anyone on the Web. And MySpace even lists this information by birthplace and age. It's like a free checklist for troublemakers and it endangers children," Buchanan said. 34. From the passage, we can learn that MySpace ______. A. brings about the generation gap B. is very careful about people's privacy C. encourages you to list your personal information D. lists the telephone numbers of your friends 35. Why are some parents against MySpace? A. Because they think MySpace has a bad influence on their children. B. Because they don't want to pay so much money for MySpace. C. Because it takes up too much of their children's spare time. D. Because troublemakers can easily reach their children through the site. 36. What can we infer from "Every time we hold a parents’ meeting, the first question is always about MySpace "? 9 A. MySpace has become a top problem troubling parents. B. MySpace often holds parents’ meetings. C. MySpace is quite popular with parents. D. Parents have lots of questions about the website. 37. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. Internet Safety B. MySpace C. Generation Gap D. The Digital Era C Kids are natural scientists. That may be why they ask so many questions. Younger kids take up science and math with amazing enthusiasm, yet as they get older they often lose their excitement. Children look on scientific exploration as play, but as they get older they start to connect it with big heavy books, long worksheets and a lot of really confusing words. What a tragedy! We had their attention, they were listening, they were participating, they were learning and then we lost it to boredom. We need our kids to play more. More play brings up basic scientific concepts(概念). Being familiar with basic scientific concepts brings about exploration which leads to research. Once they are researching, they are completely into the learning. My boys built a small 9-hole golf course next to our driveway one day. It was a great product of science. They dug out the holes and channels to guide the golf ball. They played with architecture(建筑 学)with a series of pipes they had found in the garage. They tested speed and momentum(动量)by creating one of the holes across the driveway. They experienced biology when deciding which front yard plants could be used as a part of the course and which needed to be pulled up. If I had sent them out to the yard to build a 9-hole golf course, it would have never happened. It was because it was their idea that it worked. I try to tell them some of the concepts after the fact. When they ask about something, I try to relate it back to something they have built, experienced, or felt. I try to give them a vocabulary around what they already know. An afternoon can change the way kids look at the world. Not bad for a day of play. 38. What can we learn about kids' attitudes towards science from the first three paragraphs? A. Kids think they are born to work as scientists. B. Younger kids begin to learn science on purpose. C. Older kids often link science with boring things. D. Children's taking an interest in science is a tragedy. 39. By building the small golf course, the writer's boys learnt about all of the following things EXCEPT ________. A. speed B. momentum C. biology D. agriculture 40. If the writer had forced the boys to build a small golf course, they might have________. A. asked her some related scientific concepts B. made a better golf course than the one they had built C. asked their friends to help them with the work D. got bored and refused to follow the writer's directions 41. In which part of a newspaper is the article probably included? A. Architecture B. Education. C. Health. D. Sports. D What can help you make a fortune in the future?Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have 10 in school, the more money you'll earn later. The idea that popularity could have a serious effect on one's earning potentia(潜在性)shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. The researchers found that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work. "If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations," said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. "Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you feel bad, " said Xu. She believed that all this helps you "earn a higher salary". Maybe that's why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism(交友 狂症). A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook's 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large number of social contacts. But what does a friend mean?Should friends be regarded as a form of currency(货币)? "Call me uncoil, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition(定义)of ‘friend', " said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US. Daum dislikes the idea that quantity trumps quality in the age of friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship, at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of not-really-friends as possible. For example, a friend might be someone you might know personally but who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you don't actually know. Although she agreed that social ties grease(润滑)the wheels of life, she also warned, "Too bad one thing money can't buy is a real friend." 42. What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers? A. Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune. B. Social skills, talent, hard work and facebook. C. Social skills, networking, potential and fortune. D. Social skills, networking, talent and hard work. 43.What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun? A. They can help you with your schoolwork. B. They teach you how to make more money. C. They introduce their friends to you. D. They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer up. 44.We learn that Meghan Daum's attitude towards friends is somewhat _____. A. up-to-date B. traditional C. confused D. optimistic 45. What does the word "trumps" in the last paragraph mean? A. is worse than B. is equal to C. is better than D. is similar to 四、七选五 Kids love to go online. There is so much to explore and learn. 46. The answer to the question is as difficult as determining at what age a child can be left at home by themselves, since all children are different. Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine what is right for your child. 47. Of course when you are trying to determine if you can let him or her go online, your child has probably already said, "I’m ready; I can handle it." But are they? 48. How would they handle the 11 material if they ran across it by accident? 49. Does your child question other people’s actions? Do they easily believe anything that is presented to them? It is an important question to ask to determine if your child is ready to go online alone. Have you taught them what the dangers are? 50. . Have you explained to them that there are people out there that might want to do them harm? It is a dangerous world out there. If you are going to let them wander around in the online world, they need to be prepared for what they might see or run into. A. Is your child easy to cheat? B. There are a lot of dangers online. C. Are they ready to go online by themselves? D. Is your child skilled in using a computer? E. Unfortunately there is a lot of unpleasant material online. F.
