Every year, many inventions are introduced to the world. Some help us solve problems. Others make life easier,
or more fun. Here are four of last year's best inventions.
LUMI was designed for music lovers.“We hope that LUMI can help people who have just
started learning how to play music,” says the inventor Will MacNamara. The small Lumi keyboard
lights up, allowing users to know which keys to press. And with the LUMI app,
users can learn their favorite songs.
Millions of people around the world have to face the problem of unsafe food. Marc Oshima
says his indoor farming technology can help. Instead of growing in dirt, crops grow in reusable
cloth. The plants are watered with mist. This requires 95% less water than field farming.
For people who are blind, the ORCAM MYEYE 2 could be a game changer. It might also
prove useful for people with reading difficulties. Described as “talking glasses”, it can read text
aloud. Amnon Shashua invented the technology.
Christine Schindler is an engineer. She wanted to help stop the spread of foodborne illnesses,

You may think salt is just a simple cooking material that gives our food a little extra taste. 16. Without
salt our muscles would not move and our hearts would not beat.
Do you think rubbing salt in the wound will be useful? 17. Therefore, “to rub salt in the wound”
means to make a bad situation worse.
Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the animals they killed. But the improvement in
farming led to a diet low in salt. So, humans needed to find other sources. Those who lived near the ocean or other
natural sources for salt were lucky while those who did not had to trade for salt. 18. The word “salary”
comes from the word “salt”. Salt was so important, according to food historians, that it was traded pound-for-pound
for gold. Today, people still use the expressions “to be worth one's salt” or “worth one's weight in salt”. The
expressions describe a person of value.
Salt also played an important part in population movement and world exploration. Explorers understood that if
they could keep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. 19.
A person might also be called “salt of the earth”. 20. However, when you say “I think we should take
what he said a grain of salt”, you mean you accept it but remain some doubt about its truth.
A.However, salt is much more than that.
B.It means that you can depend on or trust the person.
C.So they used salt to preserve food and explored the world.
D.That would be painful and would make the wound more serious.
E.In fact, people used salt as a method of payment in the ancient world.
F.We eat it nearly every day.
