Oh, I don’t even know where the paper jam is. Text 2 M: I hate my job. I want to work somewhere where I don’t have to wait tables and deal with people every day. W: Yeah, get out of customer service! You should be an accountant or work online from home. Text 3 W: Good morning. What a surprise to see you here! You’re doing your morning exercise, too, aren’t you? M: Yes, I’ve been jogging for fifteen minutes. It’s wonderful here. Fresh air, clear skies, beautiful flowers. . . Text 4 W: The construction in front of our building has been going on for about two months now, and it’s driving me crazy! Plus, there’s no reason they need to start at 7 o’clock in the morning. M: True enough. Let’s see what we can do about it. I’ll talk to them first thing in the morning. Text 5 M: OK, the number is. . . M64. Does anyone have number M64? W: Oh, yes, I’ve got M64!This is amazing! I’ve never won anything like this before! I’m so happy! M: Well, you’ll be even happier when you start watching your favorite programs on it at home! Text 6 M: Cathy, you look worried. Why? W: According to the screen our flight to Sydney has been delayed by 3 hours, so now we won’t be boarding the plane until 2 pm. But we have a meeting at night. M: That shouldn’t be a problem. The meeting with our customers isn’t until 8 o’clock. Unfortunately we won’t have time to take a tour of the city as we planned. I have been looking forward to it for a long time. W: What a pity! However, we can look around next time. Text 7 M: Just smell that, will you? Cool, isn’t it? W: Hmm. . . I think it’ll be great. M: Better than that popcorn we made when we burnt the pan. Do you remember? Mom made us promise never to make it at home again. W: She didn’t need to. It was seriously bad. We’ll just have to remember to get this pizza out. M: Yeah, in 15 minutes it’ll be ready. W: Yes. What do you think we should have for dessert? I fancy some cakes. M: Let’s make one. Text 8 M: Flora, when you were little, what did you like to do? W: When I was small and I was at junior high school I used to like playing soccer with my friends. Actually in Kenya, what’s different from other countries is we used to make our own soccer ball to play. And it was very easy. M: Wow! How did you make the soccer balls? W: We used to collect like plastic and paper and bind(绑)them with string to make something round. So it was like, you didn’t have to spend any money. M: Wow, that’s ingenious(灵巧的)! That’s great. So were you a good soccer player? W: Not really. I used to like playing soccer but I was not very good actually, to tell the truth. M: Yeah, like me. I wasn’t a very good athlete. I mean I like sports but I was never very good. Um. . . so do you play soccer in Japan? W: Sometimes. . . Right now, actually I’m not playing anymore because the work in the bank takes up much of my time. Text 9 W: Where are you from, Corey? M: I’m from Canada. I’ve just moved here. W: Canada! Are you good at winter sports then? M: Yeah, I love winter sports very much, such as skiing and snowboarding. I also like ice diving. W: Wow! That sounds quite exciting! M: Yeah. I’ve been doing that for 7 years, since I was 9. What do you do in your free time? W: Well, swimming used to be my favorite hobby. But now I spend most of my spare time in the acting club I joined last year and I really love the theater—I really want to be an actress one day. Have you got any other hobbies? M: Um … I guess I enjoy playing online computer games. I feel quite relaxed when playing the games and it helps me make new friends. How about you? Do you spend much time online? W: Well, I’m not interested in computer games. I think it makes no sense spending time playing something with strangers. I prefer chatting face to face with my friends. M: I like chatting with friends, too. W: Oh, it’s time for class. Our English teacher is coming. After class I’ll introduce you to some of my friends. Text 10 M: Hello, everyone. My name’s Ben. I’m from a group called “Nature”. We run courses for young people like you to do during weekends. Now I’d like to tell you about the courses you can do on Saturday mornings. You can learn a lot about things like science and maths at school. These courses are really about giving you students the chance to come and find out wildlife. It’s an area that tends to get forgotten. We usually take students to a wild place that’s near their home. Sometimes we go to a beach or a lake, but we’ve planned for you to go to a forest this time. That’s the closest place for you, and the easiest to get to. Taking part in our activities means you get to do all sorts of things including building a fire, which you wouldn’t normally be allowed to do at home. While you’re with us, we’ll also show you how to make things out of different materials. On the last course, everyone designed backpacks which they were very pleased with. This time we’d get you to design and make a birdhouse. When it is finished, you can take it home and show it to your family. We think you’ll really enjoy this. Now, we’d like you to come and do some activities with us. You will spend three hours each week with us and the courses last for 12 weeks. That might sound a long time, but we think you’ll not be sorry when it’s over. Now, any questions? A 16-25 Railcard 16-25 Railcard (The Young Person’s Railcard)entitles the holder to up to 1/3 off most rail fares across Britain. It is hardly news that people are using the Internet to communicate with others more and more. Some people fear that someday we will no longer feel the need to talk to one another face to face. However, some recent studies suggest that people communicate, or stay in touch, even more than they used to. Whichever side you fall on, what is clear and without a doubt is that human communication has changed in the 21st century. But results of recent scientific studies may have us reconsider just how much our new communication forms have changed our world. In June 2008, a British psychiatrist, Himanshu Tyagi, warned that communicating on social networking sites could have a negative effect on the generation of people born after 1990. This generation has never known a world without the Internet. Tyagi says that these people use the Internet to communicate with others so much that they may have trouble forming real relationships. Tyagi is concerned that people may start and end relationships over the Internet. Describing the Internet he said, “It’s a world where everything moves fast and changes all the time, where relationships are quickly ended at the click of a mouse.” Another psychologist, Dr. Aric Sigman, warned of the physical effects that come with using social networking sites. He suggests that the reduction in the amount of time we spend interacting (互动交流)with people face to face could have biological effects on the human body. The results of his study suggest that, without real personal interaction, the body does not react the same way it would if people were meeting face to face. As a result, immune responses, even hormone levels, can be changed. These changes may lead to the development of illnesses, such as cancer. Despite these warnings, studies can be found that show the positive sides of social networking sites. The results of one study show that using social networking sites has increased the self-esteem (自尊心)of young adults. Another suggests that college students using these sites feel more “connected” with people when they use them. In addition to scientific studies, there are many who feel that the benefits of social networking sites outweigh the possible negative sides. Many people, especially those who spend a lot of time at home, for various reasons, find the Internet a lifeline. They are able to communicate with many people using these sites. Perhaps the key to this new communication style is self-control and common sense. If someone spends all of his time on the Internet, and never actually sees friends face to face, that seems like an unhealthy way to live. But if someone spends time on the Internet, some of which is spent arranging meetings for “real” time together, then it seems almost complementary (互补的). Balance is the key to keeping communication alive and well in the 21st century. 24.Which of the following ideas may Himanshu Tyagi agree with? A. Social networking sites harm people of all ages. B. The Internet weakens young people’s relationships. C. The use of the Internet improves people’s immune system. D. The online world pushes people to live a faster and better life. 根据第二段中“Tyagi says that these people use the Internet to communicate with others so much that they may have trouble forming real relationships. Tyagi is concerned that people may start and end relationships over the Internet. (Tyagi 说,这些人使用 Internet 与他人进行交流太多,以至 于他们可能难以建立真正的关系。Tyagi 担心人们可能会通过 Internet 建立和终止关系)”可知, Himanshu Tyagi 可能同意互联网削弱了年轻人的关系这个观点。故选 B 项。 25.What is Dr. Aric Sigman’s major concern about using social networking sites? A. It will stop the face-to-face interaction. B. It reduces the self-esteem of young adults. C. It may cause some serious health problems. D. It makes people feel less connected with others. 根据第三段中“The results of his study suggest that, without real personal interaction, the body does not react the same way it would if people were meeting face to face. As a result, immune responses, even hormone levels, can be changed. These changes may lead to the development of illnesses, such as cancer. (他的研究结果表明,如果没有真正的个人互动,人体的反应就不会像人 们面对面时那样。结果可以改变免疫反应,甚至激素水平。 这些变化可能导致疾病的发展,例 如癌症)”可知,Dr. Aric Sigman 担心的是使用社交网站可能会导致一些严重的健康问题。故选 C 项。 26.What does the underlined word “outweigh” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Are greater than. B. Are heavier than. C. Are more effective than. D. Are more difficult than. 根据第四段中“Despite these warnings, studies can be found that show the positive sides of social networking sites. The results of one study show that using social networking sites has increased the self-esteem (自尊心)of young adults. Another suggests that college students using these sites feel more “connected” with people when they use them. (尽管有这些坏处,但研究表明社交网站 的积极方面。一项研究的结果表明,使用社交网站提高了年轻人的自尊心。另一个表明,使用这 些网站的大学生在使用这些网站时会感觉与他们之间的联系更多)”可知,此处表明使用社交网站 的益处大于弊端。由此推知,划线词意为“超过”。故选 A 项。 27.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage? CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion A. B. C. D. 【答案】D 【解析】推理判断题。根据第一段中“But results of recent scientific studies may have us reconsider just how much our new communication forms have changed our world. (但是,最近科学研究的结果可能使我 们重新考虑新的交流形式已经改变了我们的世界)”是总述句也是文章的主旨句。第二段中 “Himanshu Tyagi, warned that communicating on social networking sites could have a negative effect on the generation of people born after 1990. (Himanshu Tyagi 警告说,在社交网站上进行交流可能会 对 1990 年以后出生的人产生负面影响)”可知,这是分论点之一。第三段中“He suggests that the reduction in the amount of time we spend interacting (互动交流)with people face to face could have biological effects on the human body. (他表明减少我们与人面对面互动所花费的时间,可能会对人 体产生生物上的影响)”是支持分论点一。结合“Despite these warnings, studies can be found that show the positive sides of social networking sites. (尽管有这些坏处,但研究表明社交网站的积极方 面)”可知,这是分论点之二。同时,第四段中“Another suggests that college students using these sites feel more “connected” with people when they use them. (另一个表明,使用这些网站的大学生在使用 这些网站时会感觉与他们之间的联系更多)”支持分论点二。根据最后一段中“But if someone spends time on the Internet, some of which is spent arranging meetings for “real” time together, then it seems almost complementary (互补的). Balance is the key to keeping communication alive and well in the 21st century. (但是,如果有人花时间在 Internet 上,其中一些花在安排面对面交流,那么似乎 是可以互补的。 寻求平衡是在 21 世纪保持沟通畅通无阻的关键因素)”可知,此句是对文章的总 结。D 项行文结构符合文章行文脉络。故选 D 项。 C It’s no secret that inhaling(吸入)smoke is bad for your lungs. But now, scientists are suggesting smoke may also carry and spread infectious diseases. The theory, published in Science Magazine, is based on the research that found wildfire smoke is full of thousands of species of microorganisms(微生物).Some of these microorganisms, including bacteria and fungal spores(真菌抱子)are known to cause disease. The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plants or animal matter and disturbs soils, it exposes thousands of species of bacteria and fungi that otherwise might not easily become airborne. You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply after fires. Scientists say the organisms stick with smoke particulates(颗粒物), allowing them to travel thousands of miles across continents. Dr. Peter Chen, director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, is interested in the theory but somewhat skeptical that the microorganisms in smoke would actually cause infections. Many bacteria and fungi don’t cause lung infections, says Chen, but it’s certainly possible that a significant number could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition. “I always thought it was the particulates in smoke that were causing these issues,” says Chen. “But when I read this, I started thinking, could it be the microorganisms that are also worsening existing illnesses?” Whether the microorganisms in smoke actually cause infections or simply worsen potential respiratory(呼吸 的)issues, the article raises a new health threat that is “certainly alarming”, says Kelsey Jack, an associate professor of environmental and development economics. This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer protective means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive. But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor-including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning. 28.What can we know about the microorganisms from Paragraph 2? A. Some could reproduce after fires. B. They could be killed by high heat. C. They could possibly travel through air by themselves. D. Some could copy the smoke particulates. 根据第二段中的 “You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply after fires.”(你可能认为 大火的高温会杀死这些生物,但文章中提到的一项研究发现,一些细菌在火灾后甚至会繁殖。) A。 29.How do most microorganisms affect people according to Dr. Peter Chen? A. They will cause lung infection. B. They might worsen lung diseases. C. They will destroy living environments. D. They might damage respiratory systems. 根据第三段中的 “Many bacteria and fungi don’t cause lung infections, says Chen, but it’s certainly possible that a significant number could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition.”(陈教授说,许多细菌和真菌不会引起肺部感染,但有相当数量的细菌和真菌可能 会使已有肺部疾病的人的症状恶化。) B。 30.Why are lower-income people suffering more than others according to Kelsey Jack? A. They live in poor areas. B. They drive to and from work· C. They have suffered from lung disease. D. They are exposed to polluted air more frequently. 根据第四段中的 “This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer protective means are often more exposed to the environment.”(这对低收入 人群来说尤其如此,杰克说,因为保护手段较少的人往往更容易暴露在环境中。) D。 31.What does Chen advise people to do in the last paragraph? A. To wait for the results of more researches. B. To ignore the air quality and to work out outdoors. C. To follow previous suggestions on dealing with poor air quality. D. To avoid using filters and air conditioning. 根据最后一段“But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor-including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.”(但在更多的研究完成之 前,陈教授说,人们能做的最好的事情就是在空气质量差的时候遵循现有的建议——包括待在室 内、关好门窗、使用高效空气过滤器和开空调。) C。 D China successfully sent the 52nd and 53rd satellites of its domestically developed BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS)—the last two medium Earth orbit (MEO)satellites for the BDS-3 constellation (星座)—into space on Monday, marking the completion of the global navigation system’s core constellation deployment (部署)and this year’s BDS satellite launch campaign. Launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Sichuan Province, on board a Long March-3B carrier rocket with an Expedition-1 upper stage, the two satellites were injected into planned orbits after more than three hours’ flight. Since the first BDS-3 satellite was launched on November 5, 2017, China has conducted 18 BDS satellite launch missions, successfully sending 30 into their planned orbit, setting a national record for highest mission frequency and success rate. In-orbit tests will be carried out before the two MEO satellites are commissioned By then the core constellation for the Chinese global navigation satellite system will be successfully completed. Wang Ping, chief designer of the BDS-3 system, said that the hybrid constellation design, in which three groups of satellites—the Inclined Geo Synchronous Orbit (IGSO), MEO and geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO)—work in concert in different orbits, was an exclusive BDS innovation and a world first. “Existing global navigation satellite systems, such as the US GPS and Russia’s GLONASS, only have a MEO satellite constellation,” said Wang. The MEO satellites, in orbit 20,000 kilometers above Earth, are a special type of satellite providing global service, while the IGSO and GEO satellites, in an orbit 360,000 kilometers above Earth, mainly enhance regional service quality, according to Wang. That explained why completion of the MEO constellation was significant, marking the completion of the core network for BDS-3, meaning a stable BDS-3 global coverage without weak points has been carried out. Feedback shows that the BDS service quality was already comparable to GPS since the end of 2018, and after completing BDS-3, “We will be as good as any GNSS.” Wang said. 32.How many BDS satellites were sent into their planned orbit successfully? A. 3. B. 18. C. 30. D. 36. 根据第三自然段中“Since the first BDS-3 satellite was launched on November 5, 2017, China has conducted 18 BDS satellite launch missions, successfully sending 30 into their planned orbit”( 自 2017 年 11 月 5 日发射第一颗北斗三号卫星以来,中国已成功执行 18 次北斗卫星发射 任务,将 30 颗卫星送入计划轨道)可知已经有 30 颗北斗卫星被送入计划轨道。故选 C。 33.What’s the advantage of BDS compared with GPS and GLONASS? A. The diverse functions. B. The excellent service quality. C. The lower cost of designing it. D. The ability to work in different orbits. 根据第三自然段中“…the hybrid constellation design, in which three groups of satellites—the Inclined Geo Synchronous Orbit (IGSO), MEO and geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO)—work in concert in different orbits, was an exclusive BDS innovation…”(将倾斜地球同步轨 道(IGSO)、中轨卫星(MEO)和地球同步轨道(Geo)三组卫星在不同轨道协同工作的混合星设计, 是北斗系统的独家创新)和“Existing global navigation satellite systems, such as the US GPS and Russia’s GLONASS, only have a MEO satellite constellation,”(现有的全球卫星导航系统,如美国的 GPS 和俄罗斯的 GLONASS,只有中轨卫星。) D。 34.Why are the MEO satellites important? You love your smartphone. It keeps your email readily accessible, and it helps you to stay connected to friends near and far. It’s harmless, right? Wrong. Smartphone addiction is a real concern, especially as people become increasingly dependent on gadgets to conduct daily activities. If you fear your devotion to your smartphone is bordering on addiction, here are eight signs. If you had some of them, it might be time to seek help: · You text people who are in the same room with you. · Your phone goes everywhere with you-even the bathroom. · You sleep with your phone. · You don’t know how to turn your phone off. · Your self-esteem is tied to how many notifications you get. · You panic if your phone is out of sight. · You’d rather be late than arrive without your phone. · You can’t stop peeking at the screen, even during a movie or your favourite TV show. What smartphone addiction looks like Some of those signs may seem very silly, but they are real indicators that your dependence on your smartphone is reaching critical levels. An addiction has no real danger unless they are disruptive to your life. But that doesn’t mean a strong attachment to your smartphone is completely harmless. Difficulty in concentrating, poor sleep, and increased anxiety-not to mention damage to interpersonal relationships and communication skills-have all been linked to smartphone overuse. How to take your life back It’s easy to shrug off smartphone addiction as a silly overreaction, but if you identify with two or more of the signs listed above, you may want to consider cutting back. Here are some easy ways to use your smartphone properly: Paragraph 1: Set limits Start by setting some guidelines to help you manage your usage. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Watch your feelings ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ Paragraph 3: Find other comforts to replace smartphones ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ 注意:1. Set limits Start by setting some guidelines to help you manage your usage. For example, you might make it a rule to wait one hour after waking up before reaching for your phone or keep it turned off during dinner or your favourite show. Watch your feelings Notice how you feel when you reach for your phone. Identifying your emotional state gives you a clue as to why you’re going for the phone. Are you bored, anxious, stressed out, or lonesome? Once you start to understand the feelings that lead you to lean on your smartphone, you can seek other ways to find relief. Find other comforts to replace smartphones Smartphones have become the number one self-comfort out there. Identify other ways to provide comfort in situations where you tend to rely heavily on your phone. If you go to your phone when you feel bored or nervous, practise some mindfulness techniques that will help you tune in to your body and the world around you. This will help you to stay calm and connected to your surroundings, rather than using gadgets to disconnect and escape.
